Video Transcript for Thule T2 Platform Style Hitch Mounted Bike Rack Review

Today we are going to show you the Thule T2 platform style hitch mounted bike rack, part number TH916XTR. The T2 is a hitch mounted 2 bike carrier with ratcheted padded arms to help securely grip the front wheels and a lock to detour thieves. The rack folds up for handy storage, and folds down to allow access to the vehicle. The new integrated cable lock system allows you to secure your bike to the rack via a cable lock. The T2 is a heavy duty steel construction and is made in the USA. It is covered by a lifetime warranty. :36

The T2 is also available in a 1-1/4inch hitch version, part number TH917XTR. The front wheel of your bike will sit in this bike tray. You can see there is a narrow channel down at the bottom for road racing bikes, but the rest of the try is set wide. So even the mountain bikers with 29ers can use this rack. When the bike rack is not being used, but is still mounted to the vehicle you can fold it up for extra clearance. Push the latch forward and pull up on the bike rack assembly. The bike rack will lock into place and it is tucked up and out of the way. 1:15

Loading a bike on the T2 is quick and easy. The front wheel sits up in the cradle and we will use our ratcheting hook to come down on top of the tire, just ahead of the brake assembly. The rear tire will sit in this adjustable cradle and will use a buckle strap to tighten it down. Take the buckle strap, pull it tight, and lock it down with the handle. With that our bike is secured inside our rack. One of the new features is the integrated cable locks that you can use for extra security for your bike. It retracts inside our upright post per ratcheting arm. Pull it out, and feed it through the frame of our bike. The cable comes back around into this plastic housing and a lock core will be used to secure the cable to the plastic housing. You will need to purchase additional lock cores to make use of these cable locks, they will be inserted here, and it will lock the cable into itself. Included with the T2 are three lock cores. One you will use on the hitch lock, the other two will be used on our ratcheting arm assemblies. With the bike rack unlocked we can push this trigger and slide our arm up and down. To secure the bike, once you have the arm in place, lock the core. With the core locked, we can no longer press the trigger down and release the arm. 2:52

The bike rack can even be tilted down even with bikes on it to allow access to the rear of your vehicle. First we will remove the safety pin and then come back and release the latch. The bike rack will fold down and allow us access the back of our vehicle. One of the most important features of the T2 is that none of the bike frame comes in contact with the rack. It is secured strictly by the wheels. So if you have an alternative frame bike, there is no need for an adapter bar. If you have a lightweight carbon fiber bike, you do not risk damaging the frame. Included with the rack is the Thule Snug-Tite lock. The Snug-Tight lock serves two functions. It secures the rack to your vehicle and pulls out any rattling that you might have inside your hitch. The bolt is threaded partway through so it pulls the shank of our rack tight against the side of our hitch. On the other end is the lock. The lock attaches to the end of the bolt and prevents it from being removed. There is a groove at the end of our bolt that the lock attaches to. Also, there is a cover to help keep moisture out of the lock and keep it from corroding. Now lets take it for a test drive and see how it preforms. That does it for the Thule T2, part number TH916XTR.

The bike rack can also be tilted down even with bikes on it to allow access to the rear of your vehicle. First remove the safety pin and then come back and release the latch and the bike rack will fold down and allow us to open the hatch of our vehicle. One of the most important features of the T2 is that none of the bike frame comes into contact with the rack. It is secured strictly by the wheels so if you have an alternative framed bike there will be no need for an adapter bar and if you have a light weight carbon fiber bike you do not risk damaging the frame. Included with the rack is the Thule Snug Tite lock. The Snug Tite lock serves 2 functions. It secures the rack to your vehicle and it also pulls out any rattling that you might have inside your hitch. The bolt is threaded part way through so it pulls the shank of our rack tight against the side of our hitch. On the other end is the lock. The lock attaches to the end of the bolt and prevents it from being removed. There is a groove on the end of our bolt that the lock attaches to. Also there is a cover to help keep moisture out of the lock and keep it from corroding. Now we will take our setup for a quick test drive and see how it performs. And that does it for the Thule T2 part number TH916XTR.

Love this rack! The ability to tilt it back without having to remove the bikes is awesome! Holds my DH bikes nice and snug even when the road gets really bumpy! While I liked that Thule included the lock tumblers (something they didn't use to in the past), I was disappointed that they only gave you three making the internal cable locks useless. Because of the weight of the rack, it can be a bit awkward when assembling it. I do appreciate that Thule included a set of tools to help put the rack together. I keep the tools in a plastic bag in my car just in case. Awesome rack! 45301

Very solid product. Exactly what I was looking for. A little bit of assembly is required, but as my pictures show -- I was from the shipped box to mounted bikes in less than an hour! One of my bikes has a fender on the front wheel and I was a little surprised that the Thule instructions indicate that this bike rack should not be used with fenders. I think it will work just fine. But, if it causes an issue, I can always trim back the fender a bit... Thanks again for the great product, great service, great prices, and free shipping!41248

Carrier appears to be well built and substantial. Assembly instructions are not accurate and the Thule sticker on the bottom side of the top bar of the hitch and backbone assembly was applied about 1/2 inch too far toward the vehicle. When attaching the the cross bar assemblies according to the instruction, the front cross bar is too far forward and it prevents the release lever from operating. Also, for the cost of this rack, Thule should be able to provide a lock cylinder for all five lock position , not just three cylinders. We did order two additional cylinders, but, of course, they came with a different key than the rest of the rack. Am now attempting to rectify that problem. 24530

This rack is very sturdy and of high quality. I like it much better than racks that "hang" the bike- much easier and much more stable at highway speeds. I would also like to compliment etrailer- excellent communication, fast delivery and quality service. Well done. 22039

Assembly was fairly easy, instructions not so much. The carrier comes with locking system for the hitch, for the ratchet arms, but not a lock for the cable pull out. You have to buy the lock extra for that. They should include it with the product if it contains it. The straps for the back tires fall off when you loosen to disengage. They should be attached to the frame so you don't loose it. Have not used it yet on the road, but not sure I will like it now.77802

First of all, etrailer was great. My bike rack was shipped the same day that I ordered it and I got it 3 days later. All emails were from a person that gave their name. I felt that I was dealing with real people and not just a computer. My Thule bike carrier is fantastic. It was very simple to put together and is a real quality product. It holds the bikes securely and is extremely easy to load and unload the bikes. 65397

John, are you able to open the tailgate at all when the carrier is tilted? I have a Toyota RAV4 and was wondering how far the tailgate would open. Thanks!

Excellent high-quality bike rack. Some assembly required, but nothing difficult. Holds bikes securely and includes a hitch lock and bike locks*. *One negative note: The rack includes 3 lock cores, but it really needs 5. (2/ea bike, 1 on hitch pin) You will have to order 2 more lock cores separately which is kind of stupid. The only way to know what lock cores to order is to open the box, and look at the key code - so you cannot order both at the same time (unless you dont mind having 2 different key sets. This is no fault of ETrailer, It comes this way by Thule.62552

1st installation instruction guided me to remove a bolt, nut, and washer from the linkage bar. I used a breaker bar and a pipe extension to remove the nut. The tool (wrench) that was supplied is useless. Other bolts on the linkage were also very snug. I bought the extra locks to ensure that I only needed one key for the whole assembly. Too bad the extra lock set comes with six locks. I now have three extras with no use. I wouldn’t want multiple keys to enter my home, so why would there be multiple keys provided with the original product? When I went to strap the rear wheel on one of my bikes I noticed that a rivet was not fastened to the cam latch mechanism. The rivet was not installed correctly and was crimped improperly. The receiver pin is threaded on the passenger side of the vehicle. It should be on the driver side so it doesn’t interfere with the electrical socket on my Chevy Avalanche. Let’s hope the rest of the rivets on this product hold up to use. Overall, time will tell how many repairs I have to make on this product. 62305

This is an extremely sturdy and well built rack. Bikes load in seconds with minimal effort. It has 2 locking points for each bike, plus the tongue (see CONS). The tilt features work well-the main reason I picked this model. It is designed for 2" hitches, probably fits tighter than racks with a 2" adapter. I plan on taking my road bike w me on trips. Assembly is difficult with the tools provided. The Thule tool (i had to say it) is a poor wrench. Use a 3/4" (19mm) socket and wrench instead. Also, the thule 5mm allen wrench doesn't fit the bolt heads well, if you have a T-handle 5mm, use it. Directions are good enough. Cons. My biggest and most legitimate complaint is the locks, or lack thereof. A $400 rack that takes 5 locks should come with 5 locks!!!!!. It comes with 3 and if you want to use 5 you have to order 6-go figure! Also, It's pretty heavy, mounting it on your car is a 2 person job. 52262

I also am in the market for a new high end tray rack, and I agree with Ted 73.00 dollars for a 6 pack of locks??

comment by: Mark Andrews - 12/27/2012

The multi-packs are a great option for those that want to convert all of their Thule accessories to the same lock number and have additional keys. Since the T2 already comes with 3 locks, if you wish to add more, it would be more cost friendly to buy 2 additional locks that match the ones on the T2. The part number is designated as THLOCKNXXX. Simply replace the XXX with the three digits found on the locks when you get your T2.

Recently purchased the TH916XTR from etrailor. First off my experience with etrailor was great. Product was shipped quickly and on time and everyone I spoke with or had email transactions with was more than helpful answering all questions. I found the 916 easy to assemble and extremely easy to use. Couple of things that could be improved on the product itself. -The front wheel tray needs metal threaded inserts for attaching to the platform instead of just screwing in to the plastic. This is a stripping accident waiting to happen. Have to be very careful not to over tighten. -The 916 has a good locking system but some odd quirks. The fact that it has 5 places for locks but only comes with 3 locks is well for lack of better terms just ridiculous and makes no sense at all. For this kind of money you should not have to purchase a separate locking kit in order to have a one key system for all locks. Even if you do not buy the one key lock kit you still will have to purchase extra inserts if you want to use the cable locks. Also when you purchase the extra locking system it comes with 6 lock inserts when you only need 5. Don’t really understand that either. I know you can use the extra insert for other Thule products but this does not justify having to spend the extra money on the additional locks. This product should come with all locks necessary. Just my opinion Other than that I am glad I purchased the TH916XTR. Easy loading of bikes and folds up nicely when not in use with plenty of bumper clearance. I use it on the back of Dodge 1500 Ram and have sent some pictures to show how it looks and works on my truck. As you can see the tilt down feature works great for being able to put the tail gate down. I have Zip wheels on my Madone with 3 inch rim depth as you can see the rear wheel bracket works well on these deep rims. When my mountain bike is added both fit well with plenty of clearance between the bikes. Minimal if any movement when driving down the road. Overall a great product and I would recommend this rack to other people. Free shipping is great also. Hope this helps anyone in the market looking at bike racks. 49132

Before buying the T2 rack, 2" trailer with locks, I did ALL the research on other makes and models and this was by far theee best! You pay a little more but its worth it, trust me. I chose E-trailer for the Great! price, Great! customer service, with videos, easy instructions and fast delivery. Yeah it took me about 1 hour to install but that's because I'm NOT mechanically inclined lol. I would recommend you use a 1/2" ratchet wrench drive to secure all the bolts. Once installed, its soo easy to mount and secure the bikes. I have included some pics mounted to my 2000 4x4 4-Runner. My 29er Specialized Rock Hopper and 26" 2012 Focus MTB. I made small adjustment (6" away from door hatch) allows for easy access. This is going to be a GREAT! summer with E-trailer TH916XTR bike rack. C-ya at the beach =) 46608

The carrier came well packaged and the contents in excellent condition. The setup went well but could have been a little easier with more descriptive directions from the user manual. Once assembled, the testing phase of loading and securing two bikes was very easy. Lastly, I'm please at how sturdy the construction of this carrier is. 38551

Product is great. Better than I had anticipated. Only issue was instructions were not correct. I have to disassemble once and flip the tracks. Once that was done, it was a snap. My wife didn't even have any issues using. Delivered on time and in great condition. 37333

I received the T2today! the Thule T2 was very easy to assemble. The T2 fits my 4Runner great. you can lower the rack and open the rear hatch with no problem. I am hauling two 29ers with no problem. The bike frames do not come in contact with each other. No lost of paint, like the hang type bike racks. Etrailer does an excellent job, I received the T2 in a couple of days after placing the order. No problem at all...! John B, Norfolk, Virginia34010

Just about the ultimate bike carrier. Arrived in 3 days, assembly took 20 minutes or less. It is a little heavy for my wife to install herself and the fold down feature is a bit difficult and doesn't really work with bicycles on the rack trying to open the back door on her car (Toyota Sienna). I don't think it's right that you have to purchase lock cylinders separately if you want to use all 5 locks. But, it does everything I want it to do and carries the bicycles securely and safely. 33537

Just received my Thule Bike rack. It came within 5 days of ordering the product and the price was more than fair considering other places to order from Free shipping is always a bit +++ and they updated my shipping at not charge. Rather then 7-10 days it was delivered in 5 days. Product was delivered with all parts intact and I just completed installation (took about an hour). Great Service and product - will know more once we have used it a few times ... but so far so good. I recommend eTrailer.31071

This is one of the best platform type of racks you can buy. The multiple methods of locking the bike are an added bonus which puts it above the Yakima that doesnt have an integrated lock. The Thule has locks on the ratcheting arm and the new model has an added cable lock built in to the arm that secures the frame and not just the front wheel. The only downside is that you have to but the locksets seperately. This is something Thule should add to the rack. Installation is simple. No real installation except for bolting on the wheel holder and sliding the racks onto the main carrier. 16091

  • Will the Thule T2 Platform Bike Rack TH916XTR Fit a 2010 Toyota RAV4
  • The Thule T2 should fit your 2010 RAV4. However, since the rear door swings to the right instead of up, I do not think you would be able to open the door with bikes on the rack. You would need to take them off and fold the uprights down. In order to be sure it will clear the spare tire you will need to take a measurement. • The Comparison Of Wheel Ratcheting Arms To Frame Ratcheting Arms On A Bike Rack
  • The wheel ratcheting arm like on the Thule Hitch Bike Rack, # TH916XTR, eliminates contact of the arm to the bike frame, so there is no chance of damage to the frame. Also, the bike frame design and shape does not matter when using a wheel ratcheting arm bike rack. The wheel clamping arms also prevent the bikes suspension from being compressed during transporting, which is much better for mountain bikes. When using a bike frame clamp, there is constant pressure on the bike suspension which w

From the top of the shank to the underside of the nearest platform measures 4-3/4 inches. The rack, when folded down, is at a slight angle so the farthest platform will actually be about 3/4 of an inch higher. The 4-3/4 inch rise should keep the rack from contacting the ground. • Availability of 2 Bike Hitch Bike Rack That Will Work on the Rear of a Fifth Wheel
