Video Transcript for Swagman XTC4 Wheel Mount Hitch Bike Rack Review

Today, were going to review part number s64665 from Swagman. This is a XTC-4 bike rack. Okay, a few things to know about this bicycle rack that it is designed for 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitches only. All right and this bicycle rack can fold up when its not in use. One measurement that will help you out in determining if this will work with your vehicle is the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of a wheel loop will measure about 12 inches. This also includes a hitch lock and cable combination.

Well go ahead and install it into the hitch. Then, well go ahead and install the anti-rattle bolt. Now, this bicycle rack does come with two anti-rattle bolts, one locking and one non-locking.On this review well go ahead and use the locking one, so we will go ahead and install the hitch pin and thread it into place. Then, well go ahead and tighten down it. For now, well go ahead and install the lock.

Well go ahead and leave the cable off for now, so you can see how the lock goes onto the pin. At this point we can go ahead and fold down the bike rack. First, there is a pin we have to remove and a clip. We will pull the clip first and then pull out the pin. Then, we can go ahead and lower the bike rack down to the carrying position.

Then, we will go ahead and re-install the pin and then a clip. All right, now we will go onto the wheel loops. As you can see here theyre adjustable on the bar from left and right. Theres a small knob that we have to loosen, so we can adjust them to move them where we want and then we can go ahead and tighten them down to lock them in place. To help hold the bicycle wheel in place theres a strap also in the wheel loop, well show how that works. If you have a strap that snaps onto the wheel loop and it goes through the wheel to secure the bike.Next, well go ahead and raise the center post.

Well release the pin and then pull it up. Then, well go ahead and re-install the pin. All right, we have one done, lets go ahead to the next one and do the same thing. Now, well go ahead and show how the clamps work. They slide down, but you have to release the catch to bring them back up and you can see how we pull on the trigger right here and the teeth release from the post so that you can move it up and down.Okay, on this bike rack there is three points of contact to hold the bike in place: the clamp and the two wheel loops. At this point we can go ahead and load up the bike. Well go ahead and run the clamps up to the top of the post and then well go ahead and get the straps out of the way. When you actually load up a bike its always a good practice to load up from the closest to the vehicle on the way back. We did our bike on the outside edge of the rack; its a little bit easier to see how the bike gets loaded up. Well load up the bike, put the wheel in the wheel loops and bring the clamp down onto the top tube of the bike. Well go ahead and snitch it down and make sure its tight. Then, well go ahead and run the wheel straps through the wheels and then fast them.Next, well go ahead with our security cable. Well take the one end of the security cable and run it through the loop. Well go ahead and take the cable, well run it through the bikes and frame and then run the cable through itself and then onto the locking pin. Okay, and with that, thatll finish it for our review of the Swagman XTC-4 bicycle rack, part number s64665.

Placed my order on a Monday and had my new rack on Friday. While the instructions for assembly could tolerate some improvement they were plenty goood enough to get the job done. Took me about an hour to assmble but I wasn't in a hurry. I attached the rack to my Curt receiver (part #C13105) that I installed on my 2011 Toyota Sienna XLE. Only problem with this setup is insufficient clearance to swing the rack into the full upright storage position. I also have to loosen the handlebars on the bike closest to the van and turn them 90 degrees so they don't touch the back of the van. Both these issues could be solved with a hitch extesion but simple enough to work around without. No biggie. Guess that's the price I pay for having the Curt receiver discretely snuggied up under the bumper. This rack is a serious hunk of steel that does a great job of holding the bikes in place. NO wiggle at all. After test fitting the bikes in place, I'm very confident that the bikes will stay put for a long road trip. Getting all the bikes on the rack and clear of each other does take some experimentation. But once you get it set, it's much faster loading on subsequent trips. The provided locking, anti-rattle pin does a great job of securing the rack to the receiver and makes it all feel like one solid piece. The provided cable lock threads through the bikes and back to the locked anti-rattle pin so nobody can steal your bikes while you're at the hotel, etc. Overall, the construction looks/feels very solid and I really don't see anything where I thought they were trying to save money on construction. This does make the rack a little heavy and it could be challenging for a smaller person to manage. I really like the way this rack holds the bikes from the wheels up as oppposed to hanging off a bar. I was afraid the other style would have the bikes swinging lik e a pedulum. Sorry for the long review, hope there's some helpful information in here some of you.36068

Great product.....especially for the money. I used to have a Yakima rack that would hang the bikes from their cross bar. For women's and children's bikes, it was a nightmare! This rack makes it very easy to load any bike. Plus, it does not scratch the paint. Overall, this is a very nice, easy to use, high quality product. Etrailer was also great to buy from - they upgraded my shipping at no charge and I had the rack within 3 business days. Thanks for a great shopping experience!6528

Nicely constructed platform rack that allows for adequate adjustments to fit various bicycles. Unit weighs in around 60 lbs. Only disappointment for me with this purchase is that I am going to have to buy an extender for my Hidden Hitch. I can't fold this rack into the upright position on my 2011 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring without it - it would hit my rear bumper. Oh well...looks like I'll be spending some more money at etrailer.com. They are a top-notch company to deal with!23206

Sturdy rack. Assembly pretty straightforward. Despite her handiness, my wife was able to mount the rack without assistance. Good value, for this level of function. A well-engineered device.17224

Very nice rack As the other reviewers have stated, it's a very sturdy rack that holds the bikes securely. It took about 30 minutes to assemble, lining up the masts so you can insert the crossbars was a little tricky, and you have to pivot the masts to get the mounting bolts set, but nothing too difficult. Mounting the bikes was easier than I expected based on the reviews. They go right on with basic adjustments to account for bike size. The ratcheting hooks are are not difficult to release if you push down on the hook while releasing (thanks to another reviewer for that tip). The rack doesn't rattle or sway on our SUV, it's perfectly silent. Looking forward to many, many riding trips with this rack. 4029

Fits recumbent bikes too! Needed to haul 4 bikes but did not want to use a combination of racks and roof mounts. With my wife's recumbent bike it made finding a rack a challenge. This rack is perfect for hauling a recumbent, a hybrid, or a childrens bike. The adjustable trays accomodate a wide range of wheelbases and work great! Saved me serveral hundred dollars over a roof rack and trailer hitch combination. Easy on and off, and the rack folds up out of the way when the bikes are off it. Definately worth every penny.3325

Best rack for the money This rack does what it's designed for. It will hold almost any four bikes that are made, in any combination - Downhill, ten speed, kids, cruisers, etc. And there's no need to remove wheels!2513

Excellent Easy Rock Solid Rack Long story short. Purchsed this rack after a very bad experience with the hanging rack style. Hanging racks are impossible. This rack is WHAT A RACK SHOULD BE!!! You can stagger the bikes left to right. The bikes don;t hit each other ever. You just set the wheel saddles once and you are good from here on it. Simply set you bike down in the rack. Swing the bar up and push the well padded hook down (even works on girls bikes). Love the solid lock ratchet hooks. The build quality of this rack is exceptional. The rack is rock solid ulike my first rack. Super easy to use. If you have had it with trying to hang your bikes. Then this solid baby is for you. Best I have seen. My compliments to Swagman.2166

Very nice purchase. Excellent product. One warning: if your brake cables run along the top of the frame, put a cloth under the hold-down hooks. The vibration will cause the cable to rub off the paint without some type of barrier.46345

The bike carrier arrived in 2 days. It was easy to assemble. Once we adjusted everything to fit the four bikes we have, it was easy to load and unload. We left on a 1200 mile trip with our bikes and I was very impressed with the sturdiness of the rack. There was very litlle movement even at 75 miles per hour. Great product! I will buy from etrailer again. Easy transaction.43718

I bought this to carry adult bikes and children's bikes, which it will do with some improvising, but if I had a choice I would have probably seen if perhaps there was another carrier better suited for the job. I wouldn't recommend this carrier for bikes under 20in, and even my sons 20in bmx bikes tires will not fit in the wheel holders. Don't get me wrong here, this is a fairly clever design that is obviously better suited to adult sized bikes. Even held my wife's bike well enough. As for the quality, I like the ratcheting hold downs, but I do see the potential for lots of paint being chipped away and rust forming. The rest of it seems like it will handle its job well enough, but I wouldn't recommend using the thing like a jungle gym either. Also, watch that the wheel holders are tight periodically as mine have loosened on their own due to temp changes or vibration I guess. Overall, it does what it is suppose to do, just not what I wanted it to do. In two years it should be fine (my daughter will be on a bigger bike by then or at least I hope she will be). 12682

This is a great hitch. The installation was easy and the unit fits nicely on the back of the vehicle. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to carry more than two bikes. It is a bit heavy. The piece that fits into the reciever on the hitch is a bit short.12510

This is one rock solid rack. Easy to assemble with the hint from another reviewer to assemble on the hitch. First time loading was a bit of a puzzle because you have to figure out the best way your bikes will fit. There's plenty of adjustability, and it works great with the two "step through" ladies bikes we have with the steep-angled top tubes. Now that I've got it all adjusted, it's less than five minutes on and off for the four bikes. When folded up it just clears the bumper of our XC90. On two 50 mile round trips with the four bikes there was no concerns at all. I'm very satisfied with the rack, and at the price, I think it's a great value.10753

Great option for the money Bike rack was easy to Assemble and install on trailer hitch. Loading bikes (2) was simple enough.I did scratch Paint on car,so will keep some touch up paint on hand. There are 2 allen screws holding rack to tow bar (hitch tounge). These could be easily removed so a cable lock or chain needed to secure rack to the auto to prevent theft.4' is sufficiant. Rack is sturdy enough and remains stationary while towing. Plastic knobs for tightening wheel holders are fragile and may not last as long as the rack. Rubber wheel straps also may break in time. Those issues can be worked around later if in fact they do occur.Overall I expect to get good use from this device for several years and is a good starter model.3404

Great quality, awesome price I ordered this on etrailer Feb 1st, got the delivery on Feb 8th. Perfect packing. The product was very easy to assemble. There were finally 4 small screws that I was not clear what to do with. Called etrailer and they clearly told me where the screws go. The rack is built strong, really good quality. I was actually surprised to see such great quality at less than half the price of a Thule or Yakima. Overall the product is easy to use. Yes it has some quirks like when you fold the center rachet arm, the cotter pin to hold it in place is sometimes hard to push in. Not a big deal but something that swagman can improve on. Also one other key point is the total dimension of this rack. I have a Honda Odyssey and with 4 bikes mounted on the rack, it takes about 3-3.5 feet of space at the back (juts out). A thule T2 or Yakima hold up for 4 bikes will be close to 5.6-6 feet. The swagman has a great advantage in reducing vehicle sway and drag. As with anything this comes with a drawback that you need to play around and figure out the best positions for the bikes. Again not a big deal, one time job of 10 mins. Overall I am very happy with the bike rack and even more happy with etrailer. I will be coming to etrailer for all my future rack, hitch needs.2706

If you've done any research or read any of the other comments on either this rack, or this seller...rest assured they really are as good as everyone says! I ordered my rack on around 4pm est on a Friday afternoon and within an hour I received an email that said they have shipped my product AND upgraded to priority shipping. Can't say enough positive things about the customer service! When the rack arrived, it took me a little over half an hour to get it set up. Probably would e been faster if I were even slightly mechanically inclined (or if didn't I didn't have to borrow a socket wrench from my neighbor). We finally had an opportunity to load up the bikes and head out for a ride today. As others have said, the first time you load up your bikes, it's kind of like a puzzle to get them situated. Took about 15 minutes. This rack is awesome! Very sturdy and the bikes were very secure. Only racks I have had in the past were rooftop fork mount racks. This is so much easier! On e we got to the trail (over an hour drive) getting the bikes off was a piece of cake. Afterwards, it was time to load them back up and it was less than 5 minutes to get them all on and ready to hit the road. There were other 4-bike racks on the website, but this one had enough great reviews that I felt comfortable making the purchase. After the fact, I'm very glad I did! I can't imagine the $800 rack can be that much better than this, and I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a 4-bike platform rack. I will definitely recommend this rack and etrailer.com to everyone I know.63607

I can't believe how quickly I received the bike rack. I ordered it on Monday and got an email Monday that it was shipping. The package arrived at my house on Wednesday; 2 days! I put it together today and installed it to check it out. Easy assembly especially after reading assembly comments and suggestions online while I was shopping. Best advice was to put it on the vehicle before assembling the remaining parts as the vehicle becomes your second set of hands to hold it. I think this will be perfect for our set of mountain, ladies, and kids BMX style bikes as it was tough to load all the different types on my last hanging rack.59532

This product worked really well for me. I installed it on a 2010 Honda CR-V via a Hidden Hitch trailer hitch. We drove from Chicago to Panama City, FL and back without any problems. It took some time to find the optimal placement of our four bikes, but once I had it set up getting the bikes on and off the rack was fine. At no time did I worry about the safety or stability of my bikes. The combination of the wheel straps and the ratcheting "hook" kept them very secure in the rack. The Swagman XTC4 is very well-built and I really appreciated the included hitch and cable lock. However, being well-built = being heavy. While it is possible to get this attached to your vehicle by yourself, it is _much_ easier doing it with two people. 55812

Good rack for carrying four bikes however you need to jockey the bikes around to get four to fit. The hooked security bars go down easily to snug up holding the frame down but when it comes time to release them they are very difficult sometimes to release. Also this rack will not clear the bumper on a 2010 Toyota Sienna Van in order to store the rack in the upright position. Using a Curt hitch for the Sienna.47064

As noted by other reviewers, this is a heavy rack. But it is extremely well-designed and well-built. Easy to assemble and mount on our 2012 Honda Odyssey though it can't go to upright (storage) position due to lack of bumper clearance. Very easy to get the bikes on and off. And rock solid during transport. My only complaint is the locking pin appears weak. I'll replace it with something more substantial.43574

Assembly was pretty easy. The carrier worked great for me I have 1 mens 1 womens an intermidiate girls and a kids girls. It is sturdy and the hitch pin that threads in to the rack really firms it up when mounted. It is better than I expected and the qualty is great. The cable lock that is provided is good quality and easy to use. It don't seem like the skimped on anything. 35034

Carrier is well designed, easy to use, and keeps four bikes as stable as anything I can imagine for such little effort loading. I simply love it. The only way this could get better is if it were available in a swing-away design. Assembly is pretty straight forward, but does take more time than I imagined to get everything to align, but it's about as pre-assembled as possible. The keyed locking pin is super cheap, and did not even work long enough for me to get it in the hitch the first time, but the anti-rattle pin works as designed. Shipping was quick and the product arrived unharmed. Overall this was one of my best investments in a while. Thanks etrailer. If your considering - just save yourself some time and buy it now - you won't regret it.33152

The unit itself went together pretty easy. Fits my kids bikes no problem. Leaving for 2000 mile road trip next week so will update after that but I expect no problems. I purchased this bike rack after looking on-line and reading the reviews. First of all, etrailer did an outstanding job in keeping me posted once I ordered it and providing the information I needed to track it. It arrived within their shipping window, which was great as we needed it for an upcoming trip. As other reviewers mentioned - it takes a few minutes to determine the best configuration for the 4 bikes - but really no more than that. For the most part, installation was super easy. The only part of the installation that was a bit more frustrating was bolting on the two ratcheted uprights. There must be a trick to lining up the bolts to go through the holes and attaching the nuts - but I didn't figure it out. If anyone out there has a trick to that step - I'm sure others would appreciate it! Without that step, it probably took less than 10 minutes for the rest of the entire assembly. I also ordered the lockable hitch pin and the cable lock - I strongly recommend both - plus they're great products, too! The rack is pretty heavy, not unexpectedly heavy for a 4-bike rack, so having an extra hand to mount it in the car's receiver was helpful. Overall a great ordering process, a fairly easy assembly, and a great product.16852

Great product, well thought out, holds odd shaped mountain bikes securely in wheel mounts, security cable works well. Overall a great bike rack for the money. Only downside is the weight of the rack, which is a result of its heavy duty design. 12478

Getting the 4 bikes on at first was like a puzzle, but once you get them in order, it becomes easy. A little heavy, but I believe it is the lightest 4 bike carrier on the market and also the cheapest. Very sturdy and not cheaply built. I am glad I chose this one.10100

It took about 20 minutes to assemble the rack by myself. Used it this weekend to haul 4 mountain bike about 150 miles. Our old rack used to let the bikes rub and bang together when the road was choppy. No worries with this rack. Nothing can move.9231

This rack is shipped WITH a threaded locking hitch pin AND a 6 ft plastic-wrapped steel cable, so don't waste your money buying these accesories!! etrailer.com is blissfully unaware of this fact and you'll be responsible for the return shipping because they refuse to admit they know nothing of the products they sell-they just try to sell needless additional accessories! Don't get sucked in!!! That being said, the rack itself is decent for the money. I could've gotten it slightly cheaper elsewhere but was happy with a previous purchase from etrailer-NOT THIS TIME! It is heavy, bulky, and time consuming to get 4 bikes aligned on it properly. My wife would certainly not be able to load it herself. Once all the work's done it does travel well, though. If you're looking for a rack that secures the bikes safely-this is the way to go. It makes no difference what angle the bike's crossbar is at (or if it's a ladies crossbar), this rack will accomodate any style or size bike. This kind of rack makes much more sense than the "hanging" types unless you have 4 identical bikes in the same frame size. Looking forward to many years of use as it appears to be well-made. Just don't buy it from etrailer! 34807

We are a family of 4 with bikes that have non-traditional frames and so they don't work well on the hanging type racks. I wanted a platform type rack and when I looked around I found name brand racks and did not want to spend the $600 to $800. I found this very affordable rack at etrailer and got it delivered in time for our trip to Yosemite. The rack assembled easily. I like the way you can bolt it to the hitch to make it more secure. The bikes load very easy and are very secure. An added surprise was the lockable hitch pin and a cable to lock the bikes. I did not know they were included. 21133

Awesome Rack This rack is great. I moved from a Allen hanging rack to this and the difference is night and day. I dont drive watching the rear-view mirror the entire time hoping my bikes dont fall off. Installed on a Jeep Liberty - NOTE, this rack fits a Liberty with Spare Tire installed but you cannot fold it up or mount a bike on the spot closest to the car. I just removed my spare tire for the season and put is in the back of the Liberty and without it there this rack is awesome.3136

Awesome well built product This is my first bike rack. I did a lot of research before I bought this one. I am really pleased with the rack for the price. There are two things I would like to see improved in this rack. One there needs to be a way to lower the rack the other way around with the bikes on to be able to open rear hatches on vans and SUV's. Its not a big deal but its just a nice feature. The other issue is with the ball pin to lock the vertical arms. It can be made a bit more user friendly. I actually see that this has been improved in the next version of this rack at Swagman's website. Overall I am very happy with this rack and with etrailer. They are prompt and easy retailer to work with. 2867

So far so good We purchased this rack since we have two kids' and 2 adults' bikes. The rack, although heavy, was straightforward to assemble (on trailer hitch worked best). With some sliding adjustments and planning, all bikes fit securely and test rides with bikes around town indicate the rack to be stable. Empty and folded up against our Jeep made it pretty compact. A longer road trip will give it a more substantive test. 2790

Nice Rack!!! great value too. This rack does what it's supposed to do, for less than half the price of the big named brands. Maybe not as well engineered, but I'm stoked with the product. I hauled my full suspension stumpy, one rigid mtb, and two heavy steel cruiser's on a 9 hour trip with no problems at all. Bikes will not fall off of this thing!1326

  • Locking the Swagman XTC4 Wheel Mount Bike Rack and Securing the Rack to the Vehicle
  • The topmost hook on each upright can be locked with a padlock. You would need 4 small padlocks to lock each of the bikes. I have a recommendation that may be a bit easier if you do not like the idea of 4 padlocks. You could use the Roadmaster Coupler Padlock, item # RM-305, and a cable like the Master Lock 10-mm Braided Steel Cable - 6 foot, item # 78DPF.
