Recumbent bike riders used to struggle when searching for a hitch-mounted rack that suits their needs. All it took was a little ingenuity to create the XC-Extended rack - the perfect solution for carrying recumbent bikes. This platform-style, hitch-mounted two-bike carrier transports bikes with extra-long wheelbases - like recumbents - with all the convenience of a standard platform rack.

This rack comes with black XC wheel hoops, which provide a stable base for mounting your bicycles. The XC hoops adjust with a hand knob and slide along the arms of your rack to accommodate bikes with wheelbases up to 52" and tires up to 3-1/2" wide. The bonus with this bike carrier is that silver XTC wheel hoops are also included to give you that extra length required for carrying a recumbent. Simply swap out the XC wheel hoops with the XTCs and you will add 14" to the maximum wheelbase capacity, for a total of 66". The XTC hoops hold tires up to 2-1/2" wide and include rubber straps to secure your wheels to the rack.

Swagman XC-Extended measurements with XC wheel hoops installed

When the XC cradles are installed traditionally, they measure 65" outside to outside and 37" inside to inside.

Swagman XC-Extended measurements with XTC wheel hoops installed

The XTC wheel hoops - when installed traditionally - measure 81" outside to outside and 51-1/2" inside to inside.

To stretch the wheelbase capacity a few more inches, mount two XTC wheel hoops at the end of each arm on the same side of the bike carrier. Doing this increases the maximum wheel base capacity to 68".

Swagman XC-Extended bike rack ratcheting arms

Regardless of which wheel hoops you use on the rack, the upright arm offers the same great features. This arm includes a pair of ratcheting hooks that hold your bikes securely in place to prevent bike-to-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact during transport. The hooks feature soft padding to protect your bike's frame, are offset so that you can carry two bikes of the same size simultaneously, and can be locked with a 1/4" padlock. Fold down the entire upright arm by pulling a pin at the base; this enables you to reach all the gear in your vehicle's rear cargo area obstacle free.

You can release the side arms of the rack by pulling pins at the base, then fold them up for convenient storage.

Swagman XC-Extended threaded hitch pin and clip

The bike rack includes a threaded hitch pin and a clip that work with a built-in anti-wobble device in the shank to eliminate rattle in the hitch receiver during transport. You can replace the pin and clip with Swagman's anti-rattle lock (S64029; sold separately) to lock the bike carrier to your vehicle.

Swagman XC Extended Wheel Mount Bike Rack Review - 2006 Mazda 5

Video Transcript for Swagman XC Extended Wheel Mount Bike Rack Review - 2006 Mazda 5

All right, today in this 2006 Mazda 5, we're going to do a test fit of the Swagman Bike Rack, part number S64650-EXT. A few things to know about this bicycle rack, that it will work with 1-1/4-inch receiver hitch and this will also work with a 2-inch receiver hitch with the provided spacer. We're using a class 1 on this vehicle. We're going to start off our test fit by installing the bike rack into the hitch and then well go ahead and tighten down the anti-rattle bolt and put the safety pin on the other side. Now, I'll go ahead and get some clearance measurements. Ground clearance will be 12 inches by the hitch and at the very end of the bike rack will be 15 inches.

We'll go ahead and unfold the bike rack and we'll get one more clearance measurement between the rack and the bumper, and that will be 6-1/4 inches. Okay, now we'll go ahead and check access to the back of the vehicle. Now, we'll go ahead and load up the bike. First thing we'll do is we'll make sure that the straps are out of the way for our wheels and then we'll also make sure that the clamps on the center post are extended all the way to the top. Okay, when we load up our bike, we'll put our wheels into the wheel loops and then we'll go ahead and tilt the bike a little bit out of the way so that we can bring the clamp up over the seat.

Then we'll go ahead and run the clamp onto the top tube. Then we'll make sure that the pin is inserted at the bottom of the post. Then we can go ahead and run the straps through the wheels. Okay, and that's what it takes to load up a bike. That will finish it for part number S64650-EXT from Swagman on our 2006 Mazda 5..

I bought this to use with the Swagman XC-Extended Platform Carrier so I can carrier my ElliptiGO around. I was wondering how I was going to do it and the hitch took care of that problem. It took longer to get the tools together to install it than it did to install it. It is a heavy good quality hitch and would recommend it to others. It fit my Toyota Yaris Hatchback like a glove. I like the fact that you can't see the hitch when installed.82285

  • Availability of a Towing Bike Rack to Carry 2 Bikes and Flat Tow a Car
  • We do carry several towing bike racks, but the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, # S64650-EXT, is not a towing bike rack, so you will not be able to tow while it is installed in the trailer hitch. I have included a link below to the available towing bike racks. There are a couple of things to consider when using a towing bike rack. First, you will need to stay within the towing capacity of the rack. The Folding 4 Bike Towing Rack, # S64975, for example has a gross trailer we

  • Availability of 4 Bike Rack to Carry Lightning Recumbent and Road Bikes
  • The Swagman XC extended rack, # S64650-EXT, is a 2 bike rack that can accommodate bikes with wheelbases up to 68 inches. If your two wheeled recumbent falls within those parameters, it will fit on the rack. We do not have any 4 bike racks that can accommodate a recumbent bike. If you would care to respond with the year, make and model of your vehicle, I can suggest alternatives that would allow you to carry all 4 bikes using the hitch and some roof mounted racks. • Platform Bike Rack Recommendation for Beach Cruiser Bikes Carried on a 2011 Toyota Prius
  • Be sure to check your owners manual to verify that it is safe to carry hitch mounted accessories with your 2011 Toyota Prius as some Toyota models recommend against doing so. If you find that you can, then the bike rack that I would recommend for your two beach cruiser bikes is the Swagman XC Extended Bike Rack, # S64650-EXT. This bike rack will accommodate wheel bases up to 68 inches and will fit in the Class I hitch on your 2011 Toyota Prius. Wheelbase is measured from the center of one whe

  • Can the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, # S64650-EXT, Carry Recumbent Bikes
  • The Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, # S64650-EXT, can hold bikes with a wheel base up to 68 inches long. Measure from the center of one wheel to the center of the other on each bike to determine if the bikes will fit. The frames on these bikes are compatible with the padded hooks on the bike rack so the wheel base is the key factor. I have included a link to a video review of this bike rack for you.

  • How to Determine if a Hitch Mounted Bike Rack will Clear the Bumper of a 2006 Toyota Solara
  • To determine if you have enough clearance to install you will need to take one measurement. You will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin on your hitch out to the furthest point out on the rear of your vehicle. This will tell you what clearance is needed on a bike rack to clear the bumper on your Toyota Solara SLE. This rack has a distance of 10-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin out to the upright portion of the rack. If the distance you measure is less than that you

  • Will the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Trailer Hitch Mount Rack Hold a Girls Bike
  • The short answer is yes, the Swagman XC-Extended bike rack # S64650-EXT can carry a girls bike. The only time it is really a concern is if the bike has a very low step through type of frame. The important measurement that is needed is from the ground up to the lowest part of the frame where the hook will secure the bike. If the distance from level ground to the top of the lowest part of the frame is 15 inches or more, it will hold the bike. I have included a link to a video review for you to vie
