Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Accessories HT5R Review

Today we'll be taking a look at part number HT5R. This is the Brophy Hitch Adapter, converting an 1-1/4" hitch to a 2" trailer hitch receiver. It does provide a 5" rise. Our rise is measured from the top of the 1-1/4" shank to the inside top edge of the 2" by 2" receiver opening. This is going to help convert our 1-1/4" hitch or class 1 and 2 receiver to a 2" receiver. Just keep in mind it's not to be used for towing or with snow plows.

It also has a really nice powder coated black finish that's going to help withstand up against rust and corrosion. Our extension is 7", and that's measuring from the center of one pin hole to the center of the other. And this raises 5-1/2", and that's measured from the bottom of the 1-1/4" shank to the center of our hitch pin hole and the 2" by 2" opening. The 1-1/4" shank is a solid shank, and the 2" by 2" receiver tube is completely hollow. This is going to provide a maximum towing weight of 300 pounds, and it's made in the USA. You just want to keep in mind the capacity of your hitch will be reduced by 50% with use of an adapter. This part here, the 1-1/4" part, is going to be the section that slides into your hitch.

Line up your pin hole and install your 1/2" pin and clip. That's not included, but can be found on our website with part number PC2. And then to load your accessory, you would slide it into the 2" by 2" opening, line up your pin hole, and install your 5/8" pin and clip. That's also not included, and can be found on our website with part number PC3. Now to go over a few more measurements. We have an overall length of about 10-3/4", and to make sure that you have enough clearance between the rear of your vehicle and the back of this 2" by 2" receiver opening, I'm going to measure from the center of the pin hole to the back of this upright bar, and we have a measurement of 3-1/2".

The measurement from the center of the pin hole to the beginning of this weld is right at 2-1/4". The amount of space we have from the back of our 1-1/4"shank to the center of our pin hole is 1-1/2. That's going to complete today's review of part number HT5R. This is the Brophy Hitch Adapter, converting an 1-1/4" hitch to a 2" trailer hitch receiver. .

Thank you for the personal touch on the order. Not many company's do this. This is a good product and a good price. My car sits low and we needed to raise the carrier up. Looks like this will work out. 111921

Perfect for my 2015 honda fit It helped a lot by adding that 5 inch rise No more scraping on the driveways or dips. I highly recommend to anyone that owns or is planning to buy a cargo hitch basket those who own a smaller car. 154532

This item is not compatible with the bumper on newer models of Nissan Versas. The upright portion rubs the bumper and presses into the bumper when there is a load on. It may crack the bumper. It needs to extend about 1 inch further horizontally, to work with the Nissan bumpers. 105278

Package arrived as stated with no holes or damage. Installation went well per instructions I did have to watch video to find out how to install bolts in frame. There was no figrue 5 in instructions. Bolts in frame would not fit in frame hole ended up grinding flats on two sides. 96347

I needed the riser to get my bike rack higher off the ground. I wish there was a larger rise and extended longer. I need to add an extension to get the riser passed the bumper 129109

Great overall product. Only thing that the website does not tell you is that this is not compatible with any anti-rattle lock due to the bottom being solid construction. 92723

  • How to Raise the Height of a Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier for More Ground Clearance
  • The shank for Pro Series cargo carrier # 6500 is not available as a separate part. While there are other replacements they are either for specialty carriers or only fit 2 inch receivers and would not work. What I recommend is to use the MaxxTow receiver adapter, # HT5R, which will give you a 5 inch rise. You will also need to use a reducer sleeve, # HT02, to use the 1-1/4 inch shank on the cargo carrier in the 2 inch receiver in the adapter. I have included a link to a video review of the...

  • Tongue Weight Capacity of the Brophy 1-1/4 to 2 inch Hitch Adapter # HT5R
  • The maximum tongue weight of this adapter is 300 pounds. Please be aware when using any hitch adapter the tongue weight capacity of your hitch will be decreased by 50 percent. According to Brophy, the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4 to 2 inch Adapter # HT5R the weight capacity of the adapter will exceed the weight capacity of the 1-1/4 inch hitch. Therefore the capacity of the hitch will be the limiting factor. For example if the hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 300 pounds then the hitch adapter...

  • Adapter for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch to 2 Inch Receiver with Rise for a 2006 Acura TSX and Bike Rack
  • When we installed Hidden Hitch trailer hitch # 60831 on a 2006 Acura TSX it measured 4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to clear the rear bumper. The Curt adapter # D-192 will not fit because it only fits in 2 inch trailer hitch receiver openings. And the MaxxTow one, # MT70355, will not fit since it is for Class II hitches. That leaves Brophy adapter # HT5R. It will fit a Class I hitch but the issue with it is that the back of the 2 inch receiver does not come out far enough...

  • Looking for a Hitch Riser that Fits a 2 Inch x 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • The closest adapter that we have to your needs is the MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender, # MT70070. This adapter fits a 2 inch x 2 inch trailer hitch receiver and it provides a 2 inch x 2 inch receiver with a rise of 6-1/4 inches. Please note, only the bottom receiver on this adapter can be used for towing. The upper receiver should only be used for hitch mounted accessories such as bike racks or cargo carriers. Also, it is important to note that using a hitch extender will reduce the hitch's...

  • Inadequate Ground Clearance When Using Hitch Mounted Bike Rack on 2011 Honda CR-V
  • If you are carrying women's, children's or alternative framed bikes, one of the easiest ways to increase ground clearance is for the bikes to sit level on the rack with the use of an adapter bar like the Swagman Easy-Out, # 64005. I have attached a video to demonstrate how this bar works. Depending on the type of bike rack that you are using, I may have an option for you to use a hitch adapter that would raise your bike carrier five inches. If your carrier will fit a 1-1/4 and a 2 inch...

  • Thank you for your recent purchase of the Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier # TH990XT. When installed on your 2014 Chevy Malibu with Curt Class II hitch # C12115 the rear of this carrier will extend back from the bumper a substantial 28-1/2 inches. (Please refer to the linked video showing its use on your exact vehicle.) This elongated geometry at the rear of the car will indeed pose a challenge for use on steep driveways like yours. This will work in a 1-1/4 inch receiver and the adapter is a 2 inch receiver opening. This adapter is designed to work with both Class I or Class II hitches. Keep in mind, using a trailer hitch adapter or extender will decrease the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50 percent. • Can 2 Adapters be Used to Carry a Kuat NV Bike Rack on a 2010 Nissan Altima with Class I Hitch
  • As you probably know the use of a hitch adapter or extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. The extender alone will cut the capacity of the 2010 Altima trailer hitch down to 100 pounds. Adding an adapter, # HT5R, will reduce the capacity further. The Kuat NV, # N101, by itself weighs about 60 pounds. Even without bikes loaded the trailer hitch cannot handle the additional stress and damage to the hitch and vehicle will likely occur. • Advisability of Using a Hitch Adapter Along With a Hitch Extender to Carry Bikes With 2007 Acura TL
  • When an adapter or an extender is used, the tongue weight capacity of the hitch is lowered by 50 percent. However, using an extender in addition to an adapter will give an unknown reduction in tongue weight capacity, which is why we don't recommend doing so under any circumstances. The further the load (in this case, the bike rack) is placed away from the receiver tube, the more leverage is applied to the hitch. This will eventually cause the receiver tube to bend and the hitches' attachment...

  • Trailer hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2007 Audi A4 Avant Wagon
  • I do not recommend the use of a hitch adapter because doing so will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. For example Curt trailer hitch # C11180 is rated for 200 pounds tongue weight. The use of an adapter will reduce the capacity to 100 pounds. So the combined weight of the bike rack and bikes cannot exceed 100 pounds. The adapter will also increase the amount of stress on the hitch and attachment points on the vehicle. I recommend going with a straight adapter, like # HTAD, which measures 7-1/4" from pin hole to pin hole. This adapter is not to be used for towing and will fit only Class II hitches. • Hitch Adapter to Raise Cargo Carrier on 2012 Ford Taurus for Increased Ground Clearance
  • You can use a dual hitch adapter like part # MT70070, to give you some extra elevation, but be aware that using an adapter like this moves the weight being carried by the hitch further out from the receiver, which places additional leverage on the hitch and its attachment point to the vehicle. Because of this, anytime an adapter or extender is used, the tongue weight capacity of the hitch is reduced by 50 percent. The hitches we offer for the 2012 Taurus have a tongue weight capacity...

If your Yakima bike rack is the type that will fit 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch receivers you could use adapter # HT5R. We have included a video to the cargo carrier. If the cargo carrier you have will fit a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver I would recommend hitch adapter # HT5R. It fits a 1-1/4 inch Class I or II hitch and has a rise with a 2 inch receiver on the top. An adapter that features 2 receivers though is not available for a 1-1/4 inch hitch.
