Video Transcript for Reese Fifth Wheel RP30081 Review

Today were going to review part number RP30081. This is the Reese Select Plus Single-Jaw Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with the fixed legs. Has a 20,000-pound weight capacity. This hitch uses the Forged, single-piece, self-latching jaw which will provide absolute security with its wrap-around design. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact will result not only in stronger connection, but less rattle and movement as well. Has a convenient lock indicator on the hitch handle, which will ensure that the hookup is complete and secure before you can lock your trailer to your hitch.

Basically I just want to show you how that operates. If we pull out the pin and clip, the indicator will fall into place. If you pull out on the handle, there is the single jaw, you can watch it open up. If you pull up, itll lock into place. Jaw stays open, now its ready for the king pin to slide up in there.

Right down here, theres a little tab on inaudible 00:01:01 you might be able to see, and that is when the king pin slides into the hitch and pushes onto that tab, it will actually move this indicator. Let me move this so youll be able to see the indicator weve been talking about right over here. Once the king pin is in there, it will push this tab open, which will then allow you to lock the handles. So basically the handles goes, the jaw will close and wrap around the king pin, it will push in on that indicator which will move this lever open, and you can just drop your pin and clip in there, clip it, and that will lock the handle and keep the handle locked so jaw would not open, keeps the king pin in position. The hole is large enough; you can use a padlock for addition security.

We do sell those separately. Now this hitch does use the newer style elite series head, which is a tough, heavy-duty stamped steel head thats used on the elite series hitches, which are usually a little more expensive. It is a four-way pivoting head, as you can see, side-to-side it pivots six degrees and it also moves front-to-back. With it pivoting like that it makes it fast and easy hookup, even on unlevel ground. This head does also have a Zerk fitting here, which might be hard to see, that you can actually put a grease gun on, squirt grease in there, and itll come out underneath and lubricate any of the moving parts on the head.

Also, this head has the nine-inch wide funnel, rather than traditional, six-inch wide funnel. The nine-inch funnel will provide larger area for guiding king pin into hitch. Has the extended-length, lockable handle, lets you easily secure trailer to the hitch with padlock like we mentioned. Has the indicator that we showed you, keeps the hitch from locking until connection is secure. Now also I want to show you if I rotate this to the side, if you look at the crossmember, there are four sets of holes drilled in this crossmember and that is for the hitch height adjustment. Basically there is a four-inch range that you want the height to be correctly above your truck bed. So if you put these bolts and install the hitch in the very top bolts, that would be the lowest height, that would be 14 inches. It would measure 14 inches above your truck bed. If you drop it down to the holes on the bottom, which would be the highest, that would be 18 inches. So 14-to-18 inches, you have a four-inch height adjustment. This does come with the one-piece wide stance legs for stability. Now for this video I actually have the hitch and the legs installed in base rails already that have the mounting brackets on the side. Now those are sold separately, they are not included with this part number. You would need to get the correct base rails and the correct mounting brackets for your application. Now on the mounting brackets that mount to your frame or your truck bed, we do recommend to use the custom-fit ones, and the reason for that is most of them are designed to use existing holes in your trailer frame, so it minimizes the amount of drilling, and it will cut the installation time in half compared to using the universal installation kit. This hitch will fit Curt, Valley, Draw-Tite, Hidden-Hitch, and Reese rails. This is a steel hitch which has a black powder coat finish which will resist corrosion. It is made in the USA. A few specs on it: it has a gross towing weight capacity of 20,000 pounds, has a vertical load limit of 5,000 pounds. Again, the hitch height adjustment is from 14 inches to 18 inches. It does come with a five-year limited warrantee. I just want to rotate it to show you any of the features you might want to see. Heres the indicator and the hitch handle we were talking about. Heres the very back of it. And that should do it for the review on part number RP30081.

Review from a similar Reese Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch

Overall good experience, except the shipping. Not etrailer's fault, UPS separated the packages and the second one to arrive looked like it was drop kicked. The ramp on the plate was bent, and the black coating is cracked but I guess it will still be serviceable. Fit right in place of my prior hitch and I look forward to trying it out soon. Went from a slide bar to the dual jaw hoping to be rid of the chucking during stop and start up. 112340

I installed the custom rail kit and topped it with this hitch. With about 2k miles on it, it works fine. It has a positive lock when the jaws are closed. It lined up with the rails I installed perfectly. Although this is my first fifth wheel hitch, I am completely satisfied with it. 31890

Expert Answers about Reese Select Plus 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Single Jaw - 20,000 lbs - RP30081Do you have a question about this Fifth Wheel?

  • Which is Better the Reese # RP30081 20K 5th Wheel Hitch or the Pro Series # PS30119 Hitch
  • The Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, item # RP30081, has a longer warranty and added features like a larger 9 inch wide funnel and and higher height adjustment for faster, easier hookup, and a single piece self latching jaw to ensure proper connection to the trailers king pin. Other than that, the hitches are very similar, and they are both capable of towing up to 20,000 pounds if your Silverado is rated for a trailer that large. I would go with the Reese, # RP30081, hitch for the added...

  • Adjusting Height of Fifth Wheel Hitch
  • The head portion of the Reese 18K Select Plus Fifth Wheel Hitch is height adjustable from 14 to 18 inches above the floor of the truck bed. To raise the head, remove the bolts that attach it to the support legs of the hitch, and reattach using the upper holes. For safety, you will need at least 6 inches of clearance between the top of the truck side rails and the bottom of the trailer loft. I have included a link to the installation details below.

Some of the higher capacity Pro Series Hitches, like # PS30119, feature a double jaw system. Others have a slide bar. The slide bar is safe and secure but can allow more king pin movement forward and backward. The double jaw is more secure and allows for less movement. Reese hitches...

The double jaw on the PS30119 works well to completely surround the king pin and reduce play at the connection. The jaw on the RP30081 is not like some 5th wheel trailer hitches that use a slide bar. A slide bar will allow more play and movement. The jaw on the RP30081 completely wraps around the king pin for a stronger connection and less movement....

The lowest capacity hitch we offer is a 15K, like the Pro Series, part # PS30093. This hitch would work for you, as your trailer is unlikely to weigh more than that when fully loaded.
