Video Transcript for Trimming a Truck Bed Liner for Fifth Wheel Rails

Today were going to cover a frequently asked question on how to cut out a bed liner for a fifth wheel installation. Its pretty easy, well measure for our cross rails just like normal and then well go ahead and mark out our bed liner. Measuring from the edge of the bed of the truck, not the bed liner, but the edge of the bed and measure out. Well go do one side, well go to the other side and make a mark as well. Now those will be the marks thatll align our first rail way. Well make sure that our rail is even from left to right.

Well just use the ribs in the bed liner to align it with and then well just draw a circle all the way around the rails. Then next well go ahead and use the legs of the fifth wheel hitch to place our second rail and now this will put our rail basically in the right stop and well just draw an outline around it as well and then the next step is go ahead and remove the parts for the fifth wheel and remove the bed liner and we can go ahead and cut out what we need. Before we make our cut outs well go ahead and support the bed liner up in the air a little bit with a couple pieces of timber. Well go ahead and drill some pilot holes for a saw were going to use to make the final cut out. So lets take our saw and well trace on the outside of our line and just cut it out.

Alright, and from this point we can go ahead with the fifth wheel install as normal.

The rails are solid and work as expected. Unfortunately it was not clear to me from the description at that "universal" meant that you need to drill through the frame to install and that there was a custom bracket available as an alternative that lines up with existing holes in the frame. While they were very helpful and willing to do a return, the cost of shipping the new product and returning the old made the whole transaction a costly mistake. 106438

Im planing to buy the same rails for my dodge diesel 2005 full box but do not want to make the same mistake so what kind of bracket and are they a must or makes it safer? thanks

comment by: Sid - 12/31/2013

The brackets are not necessarily safer, but they are easier to install. They require less, and in some cases, no drilling through the frame in order to install. For a 2005 Ram 2500 with 8 foot bed, you would use part RP50140-58. This kit includes the custom fit brackets that attach to the frame as well as the rails that sit in the bed of the truck where the fifth wheel secures. No matter what, you will need to drill through the bed on any of these kits. I have also included a link to a video of this kit being installed on a 2006 Ram.

I purchased this hitch kit along with a set of mirrors. I was surprised that my shipment was upgraded to a faster arrival date for no additional fee-but then the shipment arrived one day early! Great service from etrailer, thank you. I have audited the parts in the shipment and found them to be all there (and quite strong appearing), but I haven't been able to get to the installation just yet. With included instructions and hardware I expect no problem with the installation. Overall, very happy with the product and the service. 44976

Was very impressed with the shipping speed of my rails and hitch. Install was pretty straight forward, the written instructions are not the best but having the video made it go that much quicker. Brake controller, trailer wiring harness, rails and hitch took about 5 hours to install. Will for sure be using eTrailer again for my needs. My only problem was the pro series hitch, I had to open up the metal brace slightly to fit on the sliders. 120070

The kit arrived very quickly, in fact shipping was moved from "5 to 7 days" to "3 to 5 days"and arrived in 5 day. During Christmas rush this was great, and really appreciated. I ask a technician friend to install it for me. It went together very nicely. I am rating this as EXCELLENT, do to the ease of installation an the escallation of the shipping arrangement. Thank You for a great product and great service. LGK satisfied customer 111867

I placed my order on Sunday, Mar. 6 and within 2 hours had three different confirmation of order emails. Didn't expect any feedback until Monday at the earliest. Received my order in hand Wednesday, Mar 9. Turn around time was great. I haven't had a chance to install yet, but have opened all packaging and everything looks just like it was described. Thank you so much. I will not hesitate to order again from you in the future! 9061

Have installed it today. Manual was very vague for ford. The photo on web site is different than product recieved, but with all that it was very easy to install and will find out on Thursday how good it works. I am in need of other products for the camping process and will b dealing with etrailer.com. Will B posting pictures at a further date. If there is a catalog for etrailer.com I would greatly appreciate one being sent to me. 48835

You can find the instructions on our website, right here on the product page. Look for the "Installation Details" link closer to the top of the page.

Follow instruction very easy to install. Works well with my hitch. Took more time reading instruction than installing on truck. Drilling whole in the bed of the truck wanted to make sure I understood what I was doing before drilling. Installed on a 93 Chevy Crew Cab Dually, long bed. Truck sat high enought that I did not have to raise it up or remove the tires whick cut down on the istallation time greatly. 82020

Best price, prompt response and delivery. Product exactly as described. Fits a great variety of vehicles. Hardware parts application and description could be a little more complete; but, it can all be figured out. I simplified L-bracket attachment to frame by welding them on. Great installation video...if you can find it: http://www.etrailer.com/tv-fifth-wheel-2002-ford-f250-superduty.aspx Thanks! 6552

Thanks for the video I am a Tech and have never installed the 30035 kit. I was able to watch the video prior to install and this allowed me to get all the tools together and installed the rails with the hitch 30047 in about 2.5 hours. I think it is a great thing that you post these videos.... The truck I did was a 2007 F350 which was very similar to the 2004 F250 in the video... Thanks. RJ 4850

I have a 1990 Chevy Silverado 3500. The instructions were fine for most of the installation. At least one top bolt location had to be moved to match the frame. Two of the brackets required some cutting of plates on the frame to fit properly. One bracket bolt was a pain to get in because it was right behind the shock tower bracket. 17/32" drill bit was almost impossible to find. 133371

Received the rails for my Dodge truck and had no problems installing them. The shipping was fast and had to call Support because I needed a new bolt. They took care of me and sent me a new one out next day. That's what I call service. It's good to have a company that still believes in great customer service. Thank you for a great experience. 71142

This was the first 5th wheel hitch I've installed and it was Pretty easy and done with in four hours. on my08 F250 I had to switch around the brackets to make it fit just as it said. Only draw back was on the passenger side where it didn't line up just right. Very simple modification and it's in. The video did help as a guide. 21698

I purchased a newer truck and my old system would not fit the new truck. I received my order on time and in great shape. I will not hesitate to buy again from etrailer. 123072

I'm satisfied with the hitch I bought, I liked the fact that I could type in my truck make and model to find out what hitch I needed.( I have a short bed) It brought up several for me to chose from and in different prices ranges that I could afford.. The product was shipped fast also. Thanks etrailer! 30248

Was not too bad to install. Would have been easier if I had the brackets welded to frame rather than drill and bolt. Just remember to put brakets, that are just setting on the frame, in a safe place when you have to drive off during instalation. Those brackets are hard to find along side the road. 61842

overall a good package however, if the rails were 46" the (L) brackets could be turned facing out and would make install 100% easier on GM trucks trying to get the nuts started was absolutely miserable, (L) brackets were on top of the frame 120901

  • On the 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 short bed to use the Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with Slider by Reese, # RP30051 you would need to use the Draw-Tite Universal Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit with Rails, # RP30035. The measurement for the short bed would be 28-7/16 inches from the rear edge of truck bed to rear edge of rear base rail. I am sending you a link to the installation instructions for your 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 short bed. It will be on page 14 of the instructions.

  • Installing a Reese 14K Fifth Wheel Hitch on a 2005 Chevy Pickup
  • I have included a link to the installation instructions for the universal kit, # RP30035. Instruction for your 2006 Chevy Silverado start on page 5. We have an install that shows the installation process. Because you have a short bed pickup, please make sure your hitch has a slider on it. Otherwise, there will not be enough clearance at the front of your trailer, and the corners will impact your cab during sharp turns.

  • Fifth Wheel Installation Rails for 15K Reese Hitch
  • We certainly have the rails you are needing. If you need the entire Universal Install Kit with the rails that mount in the bed along with the brackets and hardware to attach the rails to the truck frame, you will need part # RP30035. If you are needing just the rails themselves, use part # RP58058. The rails do not come with hardware to bolt to the brackets, so if you need the hardware you should also order part # RP58430. You can order these items online, or by contacting one of our...

  • Can I Haul Fifth-Wheel or Gooseneck Trailer With 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 5.5 Ft. Short Bed 2WD Crew Cab
  • For a fifth wheel hitch, we do have applications for the 5.5 ft. bed of the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500, but use of a Sidewinder King Pin is required for clearance. A Sidewinder King Pin will move the pivot point of the trailer back 22 Inches which will give you additional clearance needed to make turns (see Sidewinder FAQ). Before buying a fifth wheel trailer, I would recommend using our Pin Box Conversion chart that shows all the fifth-wheel pin boxes that are compatible with Sidewinder King...

  • Recommendation For Fifth Wheel Hitch on 2000 Dodge Dakota V8 to Tow 20 foot Fifth Wheel Camper
  • I would first recommend to make sure and verify that the towing capacity of your 2000 Dodge Dakota V8 Club Cab will be able to tow the weight of the 20 foot fifth wheel camper. The Dakota has a 6-1/2 foot bed so you will need to use a slider hitch to be able to get the needed clearance between the truck cab and the fifth wheel when making sharp turns. I would recommend the Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch, part # RP30075. This is a round tube slider hitch that will have 12 inches of travel...

  • Installing a Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit with Rails on a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500
  • You will need at least a drill and wrenches to install the Universal Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit with Rails, part # RP30035, on your 2006 GMC 1500. It will take you about 4-5 hours without a hoist. You will not need to weld, but you will be doing a lot of drilling. This is a universal kit and, while inexpensive, is much harder to install. We do offer a Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Custom Installation Kit with Brackets and Rails for Chevy / GMC trucks, part # RP50064-58,...

  • How To Measure For Correct 5th Wheel To Gooseneck Adapter on 2003 Chevrolet 2500HD Short Bed
  • To determine the correct hitch that you will need for your 2003 Chevrolet 2500HD Duramax short bed to safely execute 90 degree turns when towing your Komfort Fifth Wheel trailer, you need to take the width of your trailer and divide by two. Then measure from the gooseneck hitch ball in the truck to the back of the truck cab and that dimension should be 4 inches more than your first measurement for correct clearance. For example, if your trailer measures 96 inches wide, take half (48...

  • Installing a Fifth Wheel Hitch on a 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD
  • To install your existing hitch on your new vehicle, you would need the Custom Install Kit, part # RP50064-58. If you do not already have one, you should use a Slider, part # RP30048. Using a slider is always recommended in a short bed truck to prevent the corner of the trailer loft from striking the rear of the truck cab during turns. To see the instructions for the install kit as well as an install video, click on the provided links.

You can use the Universal Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit with Rails, item # RP30035, or the Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Custom Installation Brackets - Ford F-150, item # RP50081-58. I would recommend using these install kits with rails. I do not have any information that leads me to believe the rails for the Lil Rocker will work with the Reese install kits. Your existing bed rails will NOT need to be removed and repositioned. You can measure the mounting holes in your bed rails to confirm,...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch Comparisons for a 2012 Ford F-250 Short Bed
  • The biggest difference between the different Pro-Series hitches that you referenced will be the jaw design and the slider design. The jaw designs range from the economy slide-bar jaw which will make the most noise while towing, the middle of the road standard double jaw which will offer a quieter ride, and finally the premium single-hook jaw that will offer the quietest ride. And then for the slider design there are square tube sliders and round tube sliders. The square-tube sliders...

  • What Is Difference in Reese Universal Rail Kit # RP30035 & Reese Rail Kit # RP30080 For Ford F-150
  • The Reese Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches, part # RP30035 is a universal rail kit, so it will require more drilling and will take more time to install. The Reese Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches, part # RP30080 is a semi-custom rail kit for the F-150 and will require significantly less time to install on your 2010 Ford F-150. I would recommend part # RP30080 as it is a more direct fit for your 2010 Ford F-150 and...

  • Comparison of Fifth Wheel Rails Part # RP58058 and Rails in Install Kit Part # RP30035
  • In short, yes they are the same. Part # RP58058 is just the rails. Part # RP30035 is the same rails and a universal bracket kit for trucks that do not have specific bracket kits. The part you were looking at, part # RP50064-58, is the fifth wheel kit I would recommend for your 2009 GMC Sierra. The custom fit brackets in that kit will significantly reduce install time as they use as many factory drilled holes as possible to reduce the amount of drilling necessary for install. We have...

  • 5th Wheel Installation Kit for a 2006 F-250 Superduty Universal Versus Custom

  • Are the Bolts in the Middle of Rails Needed for Installation of 5th Wheel Rails on a 2011 Chevy 3500
  • The Bolts in the center of both rails were originally added to keep the above bed rails from bowing, especially with a slider hitch. The bolts also help with keeping the hitch from moving in the bed and capacity, so it is a very good idea to have these bolts installed. This is true no matter which installation kit you are using, Universal, item # RP30035, or a custom install kit, item # RP50066-58. I have linked instructions for both of these installation kits for you to review. Both...

There are two different kits that will work with your F250, a universal kit, part # RP30035 and a custom kit, part # RP50082-58. I would recommend the custom kit, as it will cut your install time by 50 percent. You will also need a trailer connector mounted in the truck bed. Typically,...

The hardware is meant for one-time use only and should not be reused. If you want to go with a custom installation kit I recommend # RP50066-58.
