Video Transcript for Superwinch LT2000 ATV Winch Installation - 2012 Polaris 500 Sportsman

Today on our 2012 Polaris Sportsman 500 we'll be installing the Superwinch LT2000 2,000 Pound 12-Volt DC Electric Winch. This is part number 1120210. Now with this winch we'll also need to use a mount kit, part number 2202900 for this Polaris. We're going to go ahead and mount our winch to the mounting kit first. Now we'll need to identify the top of the mount plate. This is easily done by locating the cutout here on the angled part of the mount plate. As we install the winch into the mount plate we'll ensure that the cable spools off the top of the drum and that this cutout is on the top side of the bracket.

Now with that done we'll place our rear support plate into position where we'll take two of the 5/16 x 3/4 inch Hex bolts from the winch kit as well as the two flat washers, two lock washers and the nuts and we'll secure them together through the center mounting points on either side. With that done we'll go ahead and tighten them down using a wrench and ratchet. With both bolts tight our mounting plates and winch are secured together. We can go ahead and mount the fairlead. The fairlead is where the winch cable will pass through allowing the cable to move freely without binding up. We'll need to pass the cable through the fairlead.

You may need to loosen up the lower roller in order to do so.With a ratchet and wrench we'll undo the bolt, slide the roller out of the way, pass the cable through, putting the roller back in place and tightening down the bolt and nut. Don't make this too tight because you do want the roller to move freely. We'll mount the fairlead to the main winch mount plate. We'll position it where we can then pass the 3/4 inch bolt through both brackets and we'll put a nut on the other side. Our entire assembly is complete and we're ready to mount it to the ATV. Here at our ATV we'll slide the winch into position here in the hole that we found after removing the black plastic cover from the ATV.

This cover is removed by simply undoing the four torqued bit bolts, two on the upper and two on the lower to get it out of the way. Our winch is positioned and you'll see in the frame of the ATV bolt holes already pre-drilled for us.We can now use the remaining four 3/4 inch bolts, pass them through the holes that were pre-drilled in the frame and into the rear support plate of our winch. With all four bolts in position we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Now that they're tight our winch is secured to the ATV and we're ready to wire it up. We're not permanently installing this winch onto this ATV.

However during this video we will show you what wires connect where as well as a good location to mount the switch and the switch box for the winch. We'll now move to the top of the ATV where we'll remove the seat. With the seat removed we can move to the driver's side of our ATV here at the rear fender and looking underneath you'll see the battery. You'll also see where the positive battery terminal connects to our battery. We'll need to go ahead and undo that and remove the positive terminal. With that done we'll need to locate the pre-wiring that Polaris put into the ATV for a winch. This wire is red in color and is approximately the same size as the battery positive cable. We'll now route that cable up towards the battery, bring it out to where the positive battery terminal is here on the driver's side rear fender where we can then leave it as is to be hooked up later. We'll now move back toward the front of the ATV where we'll open the front hatch, remove the rubber seal, undo these four torques bolts and take out the center plastic trim here. This will expose the radiator cap as well as all the wiring here underneath the headlight. These two orange wires here from the Polaris are both ignition source voltage. Keep that in mind as we will need to tap into one of those two wires at a later time. We'll now take the solenoid box and mount it. You'll notice in the bottom here of the compartment are two drain grommets. We'll go ahead and remove those grommets that work very nicely to pass the red and black wires for both the battery positive and negative as well as the winch positive and negative cables through. At this point you would want to go ahead and screw the solenoid box into the body of the ATV but again because we're not installing this permanently on to our ATV we're just going to go ahead and place it using a piece of double-sided tape to show you what it would look like mounted. You'll want to make sure the box is low enough so that when the lid closes it doesn't come in contact interfering with the way that the lid would latch. We now have our four wires down here underneath the driver's side front fender. Just for demonstration purposes we're going to go ahead and remove this inner fender liner just to give you a little more visibility. When installing yours you may not need to do this. The two long black and red wires are the wires that would connect to the winch. The shorter wires are the wires that will connect to battery voltage as well as your negative ground. Now with the pre-wiring here on our Polaris we'll go ahead and take the two short wires and using the circuit breaker we'll connect the two ends of the wires together. Now remember when connecting the circuit breaker in you do want to keep the copper side of the breaker toward the battery and the aluminum side of the breaker toward the winch. This will ensure the correct operation of your circuit breaker. Now with that done you'll want to tape it back up and ensure that it won't come in contact with any metal objects as that could cause a short. Now we'll connect the two black wires with the bolt through the ring terminals although because this is not a permanent install we'll not be doing that. Now the longer two wires we'll connect to the winch. Because our solenoid box is mounted up front these wires are especially long.If we we're mounting this to the vehicle permanently I would cut these wires to fit where I could then attach it to the winch. Now that we have them attached to the winch and our battery's connections made we can go ahead and reinstall the inner fender liner making sure that we keep the wires tucked away nicely. We'll move back up here where we'll need to install the operation switch. The switch is designed to be mounted in various positions depending on comfort. We'll locate a suitable position here on the handlebars and attach it. This will give us plenty of room to operate the switch as well as leave clearance while we're operating our ATV and having fun. We can then route the wiring down through the headlight assembly and into this space. We'll continue routing the wiring through and down the main harness where you'll take the red wire here and attach it to one of those two orange wires we talked about earlier. Now this connection will just ensure that the winch will only operate when the key is in the on position. Now that we've made that connection we'll continue routing our harness down underneath following the main harness of the ATV until we reach the underside of the front carriage compartment. We'll then go and locate the other black plastic grommet where we'll remove the grommet and pass the remaining harness back up through it.Now in the compartment we'll locate the green wire and the black wire from the solenoid box and connect the green wire from our harness to the green wire on the solenoid box as well as the black wire from our harness to the black wire of our solenoid box. Now that we've done all that we'll go ahead and just make sure that the harness is tucked away where we can re-assemble our ATV and that completes our installation of the Superwinch LT2000 ATV Winch, part number 11020210 in Conjunction with the Superwinch ATV Winch Mount Kit, part number 2202900 on our 202 Polaris Sportsman 500.

I installed the Superwinch LT 2000 on a 2007 Honda Rancher and also the mounting kit # 2202889. The install went well. I had never put a winch on an ATV before. The video on etrailer was very helpful and would have been difficult to install without it. The instructions that come with the winch and the mount kit are minimal. I found the electrical wire length to be enough as I mounted the solenoid right behind the battery under the seat. The pink wire on the ignition was what I used to tap into to run the switch. 124317

Not impressed, was missing two bolts, two lock washers and two nuts. Had to go to the hardware store to get more. Instillation directions are a joke. I do not recommend. 148860
