Superwinch Terra 25 Winch Installation - 2012 Polaris 500 Sportsman

Video Transcript for Superwinch Terra 25 Winch Installation - 2012 Polaris 500 Sportsman

Today on this 2012 Polaris 500 Sportsman, well be installing the Superwinch Terra 25 12 volt winch. Its part number SW1125220. With this winch, well also be using the mounting kit part number 2202900.Well first prepare our winch for install by cutting the zip ties around the cable. As we install the winch on to the mount plate, we want to make sure that the cable pulls from the bottom of the drum and this cut out is on the top side of the bracket. Next, well attach the bracket with four hex bolts and lock washers which thread directly into the winch. Once they are tight, well go ahead and snug them down.Next, well mount the fairlead which helps the winch cable to move freely without binding up.

To pass the cable through, you will need to loosen up the lower roller. With the cable through, we can tighten up the lower roller. Well go ahead and attach the fairlead to the winch bracket with the provided hardware. Before we can install our winch into our ATV, well need to remove this cover. To do this, well need to remove the four Torx bit bolts. With the cover off, Id like to take a moment to point out these black and red wires with ring terminals.

These will be used later in the install to connect the battery to the solenoid box so well keep them off to the side for now while we install the winch. With the winch and bracket in position, you can see that they line up with pre-drilled holes in the ATV frames. Well now use the remaining bolts and pass them through the holes and into our mounting plates. Once theyre all installed well go ahead and tighten them down. With everything tightened up and secure, were ready to start wiring it up.Well now move to the top of the ATV and remove the seat portion.

With that done, well move to the rear fender on the driver side where you can see the battery. You also see where the positive terminal cable connects to the batter. Well go ahead and remove that. With that done, well need to find the pre-wiring the Polaris Personal 0:02:22 ATV for a winch. This wire is red in color, as approximately the same size as the positive terminal cables.

Well then route the pre-wired cables up to the battery leaving it for now with the positive terminal cable to be installed later.Well now go to the front of the ATV, open the top hatch, remove the rubber seal and remove these four bolts to take out the center of the plastic turn piece. This will expose the radiator cap as well as the wiring that well be working with. These two orange wires here are both ignition source voltage. We will be tapping into one of these later on.Next, well take the solenoid box and mount it. Well mark out our hole first, set the box aside and then drill out our first hole. Once that is done, well bolt that side of the box into place using a bolt and flat washer on one side and another flat washer in that on the back side. Once this tightened down, well use the box as a template and drill out the second hole. Well again, bolt that side into place then tighten it down.Well then move up to the handle bars where well be installing the operation switch. This switch can be attached to various positions depending on convenience and comfort. We decide to mount it here on the driver side handle bar. Well be using the included hardware and tighten it down into place.Next, well take the wiring from the operation switch and route it down to the headlight assembly and into this space. Well then use some zip ties to keep our wires out of the way. Well leave those wires here for now and head back under the ATV by the winch where well wrap those red and black battery wires up to the grommet holes and into the compartment with the solenoid box. Now, we can make those connections to the solenoid box. Well then take our green and black wire from the switch and route it underneath and up the grommet hole as well. Now, we can make those connections to the solenoid box.Next, well connect our blue and yellow cables to the solenoid box. Well cut the zip ties holding them together and then well attach them to the box using the ring terminals. Blue will be the positive and yellow the negative. These wires will eventually route down to the winch itself. To route them down to the winch, well pull out the second grommet and route them into position. Well leave them here for now and move on to the plug-in for the remote switch.Well find a good spot to drill out our opening for the plug-in portion and use a hole saw to make our opening. Next, well route the black, green and red wires from the plug through our hole and eventually route them over to the solenoid box. We can now place the plug-in to position and mark our holes and drill them out. Once that is done, we can bolt it into position. Well now route our green and black wires from plug to our solenoid box. We did temporarily remove our yellow wire from the grommet to help the wires to fit through. With that done, well make our connections to the box. Well now route our yellow wire back to the grommet hole. Well zip tie excess black wire up here near the headlight.Well now connect our two red wires from the remote and handle bar switches to the wire in the ATV we mentioned earlier. To do this, well be utilizing quick connectors. Well then use a black electrical tape to protect our connections. Now we can reinstall our panel here. With our work done on top, now we go back to the winch and install our blue and yellow wires. Yellow will go up top and blue on the bottom. Now, we can zip tie our wires up and out of the way and reinstall our front components. Before we reinstall our front panel, well need to do some trimming for the winch itself. To do this, well be using Dremel tool. With our panel cut, we can reinstall it on to the ATV. Next, well connect our hook to the cable with the provided hardware. Next, well go back to the battery, then well take our two red wires and connect them to the battery terminal. With that done, our install will be complete.Well now show the functions of the winch. Well plug in our remote switch and as you can see, our winch is working. There you have it for part number SW1125220, The Superwinch Terra 25 12 volt winch on our 2012 Polaris 500 Sportsman.

I have an 04 Twin Peaks I bought used. Its in very nice shape. I use it a lot around the farm. Recently I used the winch. A warn 2500 and it worked fine for a short bit. I had to turn the quad around for a better angle. Now the winch only works to let out cable. I switch the wires on the winch and now it reals in but not out. What do I check now

It sounds like the switch itself is bad. Perhaps one of the contacts inside broke. You know the winch is still good because it will power in and out. Since you can flip the wiring around to switch winch operation, it suggests that the switch can no longer send current in both directions. I would contact Warn about getting a replacement switch. There may be other parts that could cause this, namely relays or other electrical components, but Warn should be able to help you out.

Thanks so much for the reply. Since posting question I went through and cleaned all contacts. I also took the switch apart and yes it was corroded. I cleaned it up and when all was said and done it worked again. Thanks again this is my first quad and what a work horse it is. At 53 years old and taking care of a 200 acre farm I should have bought one many years ago. Thanks again have a great holiday. Merry Christmas.
