Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your Toyota Corolla's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your Toyota Corolla's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your Toyota Corolla operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring 55542 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number 55542. This is the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness. It's going to have the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. That way it's going to provide the 4-way flat connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. This is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole, and 7-pole adapters. Those adapters are sold separately.

If you need one, we do carry those here on our website. This product is going to fit the 2003-2013 Toyota Corolla. One of the great features and benefits of a system like this is that it's going to connect quickly and easily. You don't have to worry about cutting or splicing any of your wires. All you have to do is locate the connection points in the rear cargo area. Those are going to be located behind the driver side and passenger side interior trim panels, and then simply just plug in your t-connectors.

These plugs are a real easy installation. They're going to match up perfectly with the plugs on your vehicle, and literally all you have to do is just snap them into place, and then they're going to lock into position for a nice, tight, secure fit. The side with the green wire, that's going to run to the passenger side. That's why it's got some extra bundle of wire there. The side with the red and yellow wire and brown and white, that's going to stay on the driver side of the vehicle. If we just follow that wiring harness, it's going to take us to this black box right here.

This is going to be your tail light converter. This is already pre-wired in, and that's designed to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. It's going to be constructed using surface-mount technology. It's going to offer consistent reliable performance. What that means is it's going to maximize your trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat.

It's also going to ensure superior operation even in rough road conditions. On this side of the box we're going to have the wiring for the 4-way connector. You'll see we've got plenty of wiring. It's all bundled up right now, but that way you can extend it out the back of your vehicle and make your connection as needed for your particular application. Here at the end of that wiring we're going to have the plug. It's going to be our standard 4-way flat plug, and that's going to include a nice dust cap. That way we can cover up the connection points when the connector's not being used. Once your installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector's going to be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within the cargo area on your vehicle. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at 3 amps per circuit, and for the tail lights we're looking at 5 amps per circuit. A couple other things that you're going to get. You're going to get very detailed instructions, got some nice pictures on there. It makes the installation much easier. Those are going to walk you through the entire process step by step. You're going to get some double-sided adhesive tape. That way you can mount and secure the tail light converter box. And you're going to get some zip ties. That way you can secure any excess or slack in the wiring. It makes for an overall cleaner appearance for your installation. We're also going to recommend that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on all electrical connections to help prevent any type of corrosion from being able to settle in. If you don't have any of that, you can pick up some here on our website. It's going to be sold separately. That's going to do it for our review of part number 55542. This is the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector.

I originally had a harness that you needed to splice wires together. It seemed like way to much work. I found this harness after doing some hunting online and I have to say it was well worth the extra $ I had to pay for it. Plus it was so easy to install.... Especially for a woman :) I had no trouble at all doing it myself. Thanks to the installation video on the website. Great product & great price. The delivery of the product didn't take but a couple days which was also great. 139369

(Oops. Provided the wrong review for this product). My neighbor hooked up the wiring and used to do it all the time, so it was just a matter of pushing it under a rubber overlay at the back under the rear door, and under the carpeting to curl up in the opening for the tail lights. When I do hook it up, it should be a simple matter to attach the loose plugs to the trailer, but, haven't done it yet! 82237

This trailer light kit is fantastic. High quality, easy to install, over-current protected and works light a charm. It just plugs right in with no splicing or soldering involved. Automatically converts the four bulb tail light setup (2 for each side) of the Corolla to a two bulb setup of of a normal trailer. This works great and adds value to my car. I could not be more pleased with this. 61037

I am 71 years old. this wiring harness was a piece of cake to install even for an old pilgrim like me (lol).took me about 20 to 30 minutes( but I took my time )..The only downside was the written directions was kinda vague(but then again I'm old. So I went by the video on your website and that was so helpfull...Thank you for a good product 83716

The trailer hitch's fit was excellent. Also the wiring harness installed very easily. My only problem was that the weld nuts in the frame were very rusted and it took quite a lot of time with a wire tube brush to get them cleaned out so that the bolts would install. Once they were clean, the installation was every easy. 2007 Corolla S. 79455

I purchased a T-Connector kit #55542 for a 2004 Toyota. What a piece of cake to install, 35 min. to complete. 25 min. taking trunk lining out and back in, 10 min to connect wiring. These people have it together also received the kit in 3 days not the usual 7 to 10 76916

Works. Instructions could have been better. Could have come with some more zip ties, or better style of zip ties. Some of the cables could have been longer. Could have come with some replacement trunk liner fasteners because you will inevitably break some. 10310

Product installed as expected, instructions included and using online video were good, took less than an hour and was an easy install, worked great. Worth doing yourself for saving the money. Good hitch and easy boattail hookup. Good product. 132310

Very simple to install. No splicing involved. Just open the trunk liner, disconnect both tail light connectors, and insert the new adapters. Secure with provided zip ties and two way tape then put the liner back in place. Takes about five minutes. 18362

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 2010 Toyota Corolla Sedan
  • The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, # 118459, is a powered converter that requires a direct connection to the vehicle battery. This virtually eliminates the power draw from the vehicle tail light wiring which protects the sensitive circuitry. The Curt T-Connector, # 55542, does not require a direct connection to the battery but the power draw from the trailer comes directly from the tail light wiring. For your 2010 Toyota Corolla, I recommend going the safer...

  • Difference Between the Tow Ready Harness and the Curt Harness for a 2009 Toyota Corolla
  • The reason a wire is run to the battery on the Tow Ready Harness # 118459 is to help protect the tail light circuitry of your 2009 Toyota Corolla. You see, the # 118459 uses the tail light circuitry of the vehicle merely as signal wires and powers the tail lights of your trailer with the power it gets from the battery. Tail light circuits can be damaged if they are overdrawn and the # 118459 eliminates this problem by bypassing the tail light circuits as power sources. The Curt T-Connector...

A weak ground can make some, but not all of the lights work properly. To fix this, the ground wire on both the trailer and tow vehicle should be secured tightly to a clean surface on the frame.
