Installation
This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, either behind the driver's-side tail light assembly or in the spare tire compartment. You will need to remove paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, insert the provided fuse into the in-line fuse holder.
Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.
A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Today working on a 2011 Subaru Forester, were going to install a Tow-Ready T-One Connector part# 118467. Go ahead and remove the cargo cover, were going to remove the center foam tray and the driver's side foam tray to access the wiring underneath. And you see it gives us access to the manufacturer's trailer wiring. Now we can take our new Tow-Ready Connector and plug it into the manufacturers connection port. With our port connected we need to mount our converter box, we'll peel back the cover of the two-side adhesive and mount it to the sheet metal. Were mounting it to the sheet metal make sure you've got a good flat clean surface.
Now I'm going to route my 4-Pole Connector out and up into our foam tray as we reinstall them. With our wiring installed let's go ahead and show you how to use it. Simply open up the cargo door, right in your 4-Pole Connector out to the hitch were going to go ahead and close the door on the wires that weather seals thick enough that it won't harm it. Do stay away from the latch as pinching it in the latch could harm the wire then when were done with our 4-Pole Connector we'll simply open the door back up, roll up our wire and store it here in the cargo tray area. And there you have it for our Tow-Ready T-One Connector part# 118467 on a 2011 Subaru Forester..

Very easy install for our 2011 Outback wagon. However did not need to totally remove interior side panel as in video. Only removed cargo tie down screws & was able to locate plug and mount the module by gently pulling back panel where needed. I have had issues with other vehicles in the past with the plastic retainer clips breaking and panels not going back on, so I only wanted to remove what was needed. Ran the wire thru the soft plug in the bottom of the spare compartment & out to the hitch. Made a 1" slice in the soft plug & lubricated the rubber with warm soapy water before inserting wire thru it & protected the wires in the spare area with some split flexible conduit & siliconed slice in plug to prevent water entry. If you get the Hoppy Mag-Flat magnetic mount wire retainer, item # 38095, you can tuck everything up on the body / frame and move the wires to where you want them as needed. This makes a real clean finish. I also purchased the Draw Tight hitch # 36493, 1 1/4" receiver, another great product ! I did the wire harness first and noticed the tape covered holes over the frame rail under the foam in hatch. Instead of drilling another hole from the bottom for the hardware installation as instructed, I enlarged one of the existing holes thru the top area to insert bracket & bolt thru to the bottom of frame rail. Covered hole back up with with tape. Thought this would minimize potential warranty rust & strength issues in the frame rail in the future by not drilling a new hole where instructed in exterior location. Whole project was about 2 hours at a very lazy pace. We will mainly use the hitch for our bike rack as the Subie doesn't have a very high tow rating, but will tow a pop-up tent trailer for short distance from time to time. This connector was ordered and delivered exactly as expected. Installed in 2011 Forester without any difficulty using the detailed instruction sheet that was enclosed. I ordered this product after watching the installation video and seeing how simple installation seemed to be. The harness arrived yesterday and I installed in probably 15 minutes total. It installed exactly as shown in the 2012 Outback video. This is definitely something a complete amateur could accomplish without much effort. This is a great product and is a snap to install. Plugs right in to the existing Subaru wiring with no cutting or splicing required. If you don't want the wiring flopping around in your trunk, it's simple to cut the wires, add some more length (solder and cover with heat shrink tubing), and run them through the existing holes in the body and out the bottom of the car. Most auto supply stores sell a plug mount that can be screwed into your trailer hitch for a permanent exterior mount. Very happy with the result.57610

This is easier to install than the instructions make it seem. If your interior is black, like mine, and you're doing this indoors, like I did, you will want a light back there with you. Note that the clips you need to remove from the side foam piece are flat-headed and black. I didn't hook it up to see if works, but if it does it is a superb piece of equipment. Hidden Hitch and wiring harness worked perfectly on our 1012 Subaru Outback. The eTrailer videos were invaluable, making the project very straight forward. I would highly recommend that the Installer hold on tight to their drill with two hands and SLOWLY drill the 1-1/8" holes into the frame. If the hole saw hits the frame at high speed, the drill will kick back and spin violently. I was almost smacked in the face with my spinning drill. The instructions are not very good at all. They say something like: Find the plug under the interior panel on the drivers side and plug it in. Unfortunately you need to remove several pieces of trim and clips to get at the connection point. It would be nice to show where the clips are and how to get them off without causing damage. I routed the wires differently, so that I can store them under the cover that's over the spare tire compartment when not in use. It is a long enough wire to reach my trailer, but I had to put some extra force behind closing the trunk a few times to get it to latch and not tell me I had a door ajar. 50817

The hardest part of the install was fishing the wiring harness out from behind the panel after removing all the floor panels. I didn't remove the bolts that hold the side panel on. I used a flashlight and a mirror to find the lead behind the panel, it is folded and taped so you have to ease it out far enough to get the tape off. After that, it is a simple plug and play operation. One suggestion, check your fit of the styrofoam tray before you stick the converter box to the side of the spare tire well. The tray fit better with the converter box stuck in the corner instead of on the side. This install was a 2012 Subaru Outback.47106

The hitch was well packed and the instructions were simple to follow. The directions suggest that it will take 30 minutes to install. This would be accurate after you have installed a couple ofr them. If this is your first and you are reasonabley adept with tools plan on at least an hour. You will definietly want to get th rear of the car up on jack stands to provide working room for the installation. Installing the wiring harness kit was a snap as it only required removing the storage area parts to access the existing wire harness plug.33540

Products received in good condition and etrailer upgraded my shipping method with no charge, it's for sure a +++++, thank you guys. Me and my buddy had it installed the day after I picked it up, instruction is clear, but we had hard time to take it off the exhaust hanger, so we unscrewed the 2 screws of the muffler on each side, then remove them from the hanger, much easier, just make sure you don't damage the gasket. other than that, as long as you have the proper tool as indicated on the installation instruction, you are fine. Wiring harness is very easy to put on, make sure you find a clean flat surface so the double sided tape won't fall off. Overall, i'm very happy with dealing etrailer and people working there are friendly and helpful. I will come back and let my other friends know you guys for sure. Thanks a lot. 31704

It took me longer to remove the Subaru panels to access this factory connector to attach this wiring harness to, than to install it. If possible put some di-electric grease on the connector pins before plugging in to help prevent corrosion. I also like the heavy gauge wire used in this product. Overall, excellent quality and perfect fit, with good long length wires.28917

Installing this in a Subaru Forester was a 5 minute job! A plug found near the spare tire is provided by Subaru. You simply locate it and plug this harness in. etrailer even provides a video if you need help. I think my Rat Terrier could figure it out. The fast shipping was much appreciated as well. 25184

Plugged right into the OEM plug. I brought the wires out thru the hole in the bottom of the wheel well, and secured them to the hitch. May have taken five minutes, but I doubt it. Very easy and fast.23938

I received the trailer wiring harness for my 2010 Subaru Forester yesterday and installed it today using the excellent installation video and printed instructions. I ran in to a problem when I found that the connector that the trailer harness was to connect to was in use for my backup warning system. I contacted etrailer customer support. The initial contact could not find a similar situation and took my phone number so that a tech person could call me shortly. I was called within 10 minutes and was asked to send a couple of pictures to make sure that I had the correct connector. Within 10 minutes Sarah called me after researching the issue by obtaining the Subaru installation procedure for the backup warning system. She found that the backup warning system does plug in to the connector that I needed, however, the backup warning system wiring harness includes a connector to plug in a trailer connector. Using Sarah's instructions I followed the wiring harness to behind the plastic body side panel and found the "extra" connector. I pulled it out and connected the trailer harness. I finished up by tucking the trailer harness in the spare tire well, put the styrofoam organization trays back, and then placed the floor in place and called it a day. Wonderful and responsive support. I would definitely do business with etrailer again.17140

Your video on how to install hitch and wiring was so simple to follow and easy to understand that I did not even need the instruction sheets. This video convinced me to do it myself and save money allot of money! The only problem while installing hitch I had was in enlarging the holes in my car. This was because of the material this section was made of , aluminum. or something of the kind, very soft. A die grinder would have made short work of this task. This part took the most time, about 30 min. the rest of the job was complete in another 15 min. I am speaking about the hitch, wiring took another 30 min., you will see why when you view my pictures. The wiring harness connectors fit into my cars harness like it was manufactured a the plant which built my car. The car dealer where I bought the car tried to sell me on them installing hitch and wiring because they claimed your products would need a lot of retrofitting. This was not the case at all. Everything you supplied fit perfect without any necessary modifications, however I did make a modification to the wiring harness to fit my own needs. I did not like the idea of sticking it out the trunk, so I went to local parts store and picked up a special bracket and connector to install onto the trailer hitch, thus having connector outside car as it should be. If I did not make this mod it would have only taken 10 min. to install. You can see this connector mod in the picture I am sending you. I have recommended this site to many other people in my fishing club and at work. My brother-in law has just ordered one for his car, seeing how easy my in-stallion was. With your help and a desire to save allot of money anyone can install a hitch, even if you never did one before. The two wire feeders for the bolts worked great, I never saw this technique before. Without them the job would have been tough to say the least. As you mentioned, it is wise to have another person help when it comes time to lift the hitch into position. My brother in -law helped me, now he is buying a hitch and I shall help him lift it into position. Maybe if I was not 63 I could have done the job myself. 14565

It was a little difficult to find the plug under the side panel to attach this harness. Instructional info on etrailer site helps a lot. I would not leave this loose in the rear cargo area, and snake it out the hatch when using it. I ran it out one of the rubber plugs under the spare. I protected the cables with foam where the spare would put pressure and rub on them. I then routed under the car along my hitch with zip ties, and left the plug showing a bit at the hitch. It is a pretty clean installation and easy ro get at when hooking up the trailer.13231

Hats off to Subaru for now putting in a wiring harness. My WRX did not have one and it took several hours to do the trailer wiring. With the new Outback it was done in 30 minutes start to finish. Easy to do. However, I mounted the black box on the back wall of the spare tire well, close to the hatch so that I had the maximum length of pigtail available to hang out the back of the car. There are cheaper places to buy this, but I ordered mine with a hitch and saved shipping so it was a break-even. 11519

Fit Perfect. The panels in the car were not as easy to remove as I thought but a couple phillips screws later in the latches and it popped right off. Also, The instructions do not specify how to get the plug out of the car but there are 2 plugs under the spare tire that you can drop out of. I split the one at the rear and dropped it out and siliconed it back up. Product works great.8498

2010 Forester - Simple job ...needs a tweak Installing the wire harness in a 2010 Forester is about as simple as it gets. Etrailer's video of a similar installation is excellent since it shows exactly where to place the diode box to keep it out of the way of other things. To prevent a possible shorted wire, I'd recommend adding a few inches of wire loom to both sides of the diode box to protect the wire as it crosses thin edged metal.4961

Install Was EXTREMELY Easy! Thanks to etrailer.com for posting the how-to video on installing the trailer light kit for my 2010 Subaru Forester. Talk about a great sales and marketing tool! It literally took me 10 minutes to do the install. The local auto repair shop wanted $135 for the kit and $79 per hr to do the install, but "they didn't know how long it would take because the box can be very difficult to install".
