Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your Subaru Legacy's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your Subaru Legacy's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your Subaru Legacy operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2011 Subaru Legacy

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2011 Subaru Legacy

Today on this 2011 Subaru Legacy we are going to install part number 56091 from Curt. The first thing we need to do is get into the trunk area and remove some of the interior components. We get down to the spare tire and remove the threshold as well. Alright there is 3 plastic rivets we have to remove. We just pull straight up on it, it comes right out. To remove this tie down loop, turn it, one quarter turn, there is a tab on the inside you can push down with a screwdriver and then you can work it out.

This is the tab were pushing on right here. Pull back the carpet and we can see our connection point is right here for a T connector. Press down a tab on the top right here and it should come apart. Take your T connector; put it back in to the factory wire harness on both sides. Right now we use this body bolt here for a ground, take out loop and just put it on there and were using a separately supplied nut, its a 6 millimeter nut with a 1.0 thread pitch, you can pick these up at any hardware store. Now take our green wire and route across to the other side, to the passenger side of the vehicle and again well peel back the interior paneling and make our connection, use the provided zip ties will help guide the wire and keep it behind the plastic threshold when we are done. Run it right back to the connector behind the tail light.

Tuck everything back together and reinstall our fasteners and interior components. Alright we will take our convertor box and well use a service mount adhesive which is provided with the kit and attach it to sheet metal, were not using our 4-pole harness it will reside in the trunk area next to the spare tire. Now I am going to show you how to use the 4-pole, its getting pulled out, going to pull out a small portion of the wire harness, lay it across the weather strip and we will shut the hatch on it. The weather strip will be thick enough where it will not hurt the wire harness and pull out what we need to go down to our trailer. And with that, we will finish our install of part number 56091 from Curt.

  • Does T-Connector Wiring Harness # 56091 Connect to the Battery on a 2011 Subaru Legacy
  • The Curt Circuit Protected T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 56091, does not require a power wire to the vehicle battery. It is a T-connector that plugs in line with the vehicle tail lights. Only the ground wire needs to be manually attached to a bare metal surface. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view.

  • Comparing Curt and Tow Ready Trailer Wiring Harnesses for a 2010 Subaru Legacy
  • Normally when there is a choice between a powered converter and a non-powered converter I go with the powered converter. The reason is that the powered converter, in this case # 118511, gets most of the power for the trailer lights from the vehicle battery. This protects the vehicle wiring and any potential electrical problems that could occur should there be a short on the trailer wiring. Either harness will work for you but the little extra effort needed to route and connect the power wire
