Adapts import and domestic automobiles with separate turn and stop lights (3-Wire System) to standard trailer taillight wiring (2-Wire System). In a three wire system, a separate wire is used to carry each of the stop, turn, and running light functions to the taillight assembly. Today on our 1995 Mercury Villager well be installing the Tow Ready four pole wiring kit part number 119175KIT. First well go ahead and open up the rear cargo door and then were going to go ahead and open up the access panel here on the drivers side. Now well locate the wiring that goes to the rear tail light here on the drivers side. These four wires and the white connector is the connection between the manufacturers harness and the tail light socket. Using a piece of wire or test line well test each one of the wires to locate the drivers running lights, turn signal, and brake light. In summary were connecting the manufacturers green wire with the yellow tracer to the ground wire going to the converter box.
The green wire with the white tracer to the yellow wire for our left turn signal. The green wire with a red tracer to the red wire for our converter box. Using our quick splice connecter we can make this connection. Next well go ahead and take our white wire with the pre-attached ring terminal which will be the ground circuit for our converter box and attach here to the sheet metal of the vehicle. Using the self-tapping screw well go ahead and make this connection now.
Now through previous installations weve gone ahead and identified the bundled wires that run over to the passenger side. Itll be these wires here. What well need to do is go ahead and disconnect it from the body of the vehicle to make it a little easier to access. Using our trim panel tool well go ahead and pop it free. Well take our utility knife and cut back and peel away the electrical tape covering up the wires being careful not to cut the wires underneath the electrical tape.
Now using our test light well go ahead and identify the correct wire to connect the green wire from our converter box which will be the passenger side turn signal circuit. As you can see weve identified the red wire with small gray marks as the blinker signal for the passenger side. Go ahead and take our quick splice connecter, add it to the green wire, and then attach our green wire. Crimp it down and close the clasp. Next well go ahead and cut out the excess from the green wire.
Now with all our connections made well go ahead and take some black electrical tape and wrap up these connections. Well go ahead and clean off a clean flat area to mount our converter box. Well peel back our two way adhesive and attach it to the sheet metal. Next well go ahead and reattach the manufacturers wiring that we removed earlier. Now with everything reattached we can go ahead and close the access panel and thatll complete our install. Now well go ahead and show you how to use your new four pole connector. Simply take the four pole connector out of the access panel out to the center of the vehicle. Be careful to stay away from the latch, as pinching it off in the latch can harm the wire; however the weather stripping is thick enough that it wont. Well simply close the door on the four pole wire and then when were finished using it well go ahead and roll it up and store it in the access panel, reinstalling the access panel door. Thatll complete the install of our Tow Ready four pole wiring kit part number 119175KIT on our 1995 Mercury Villager.

Ordered the 119175KIT for my 2006 Honda Element EX. Ordered on a Tuesday with two day shipping, item was shipped on Wed and I received my package on Friday. I watched the etrailer.com installation videos and did some additional research on how to get to the Element wiring, and was on my way. Took my time with the installation and the entire process went smoothly. Rented my Uhaul trailer on Monday, plugged in and hit the road. The included wiring tester was key. Also, there are no paper instructions included with this kit. The etrailer.com videos are key. I would definitely go with etrailer.com again.12384

Trailer Wiring Converter Very good product and easy to install. However there were not printed installation instructions. Everything was provided including T-connectors and tester. The installation was very easy on my VW GTI (2003). Didn't have to run across the back to fetch the right turn signal as everything was available near the left tail light. I don't notice any dimming of the car's lights or change in blinker frequency. I bought this wiring along with the HiddenHitch, hitch ball, and ball mount. The wiring assembly was clearly marked but the wire colors don't match up with the Honda Element's wires- no big deal, just use the little doodad thing that is included that lights up when you poke the right wire. (I obviously got a friend who knew what they were doing to do that part.) The most problematic part was figuring out how to route the wires to the brake lights- I looked at the video clips provided, but they were only somewhat helpful given that none of them were Honda Elements. I ultimately came up with something much simpler (a 1/4" drill bit is a beautiful thing) that took far less time. The only thing on the wiring assembly that would be more helpful is if the green wire that goes to the right tail light was about 3 inches longer.44214

The new hitch arrived today, everything was in the box that I ordered. Very Very nice product. I must admit I was kind of expecting a cheap looking hitch. But this is first class stuff. I'll be using it on my Yaris shortly. Rather than spend a bunch of money on a pickup truck. A 4 x 8 trailer will be hauling my home repair products from now on. Also, I will be coming back to "etrailer" for a bike rack to fit the new hitch. I highly recommend "etrailer", with the on-line assistance and very nice products. You can't beat the price either. The local uhaul wanted double the money I spent at "etrailer" to install the hitch and wire it. It took me 25 minutes to install the hitch and about an hour to wire it. The hitch mounted to the car in less than 30 minuets once I had cleaned up the welded nuts in the frame of the car. The welded nut were so rusty and full of road grim because the car is over 10 years old. I used a wire brush from a gun cleaning kit, in a drill, lots of liquid wrench and a nut driver to clean the threads. I would recommend this hitch to anyone. The wiring kit was also easy and encluded every this you need except tools10993

I was replacing a similar product produced by another company, Curt, which failed on me after only about 6 months, so the installation in my case was a little simplified. I just installed my trailer wiring harness I purchased from etrailer.com For the do it yourselfer that can trace and figure out which wires are needed to splice into, it is a very good kit. I chose to solder my connections instead of using the supplied crimp connectors. I've seen these connectors corrode after a few years and then you have to eliminate it and fix the connection. Also, I chose to attach the converter to the frame with a heavy duty tie strap instead of using the adhesive pad that is attache to it. The only other thing I might suggest is a self drilling screw to attacht the ground wire. Having said all that, I would highly recommend this Kit. It saved me between $400 and $900 dollars according to the horror stories I've read online. You Guys need to get this product out there, maybe go to some Dodge forums. Good Job. 65616

The wiring worked pretty well except that the wires on my 2008 Yaris are very small so when the quick connect pieces are used it took two or three tries to splice correctly. I understand this setup is used for a number of vehicles so it probably works well on other makes and models, but I wish the manufacturer would make a kit specifically for the Yaris.63080

2008 Toyota Yaris Hatchback. We found the splice connectors to have severed the wires on 2 out of 3 three wires used on. We replaced with butt connectors. The tester lead is a great add in for people who dont have one already, and it actually works. Plan on this taking about 2 hours even it you have help. You will be taking the back of the hatchback apart to complete. Would have prefered a Plug in wiring unit-but I can now see space concerns preclude this being made.60582

Very easy to install since I was replacing an existing etrailer wiring harness that was electrically damaged by a friend's trailer (that one had a short). Took only about 15 minutes to cut out the old one and splice in this new one. I tried it on my trailer and it works properly. I would not say this was an "easy" install, but for the significant savings in cost of an OEM harness it was worth it. The OEM harness had to be installed by running from front to back under the drivers so the time involved may be a wash. Buyers need to understand this unit must be installed by tapping into the existing rear lights by opening up the driver and passenger side panels in the rear compartment (next to the spare tire wheel well). If you do not want to mount the "harness box" inside the spare tire compartment, there is a great place behind the driver side panel, however, you will have to lengthen the right turn signal wire (green) to reach the right light. I ran the 4 plug trailer harness through the license plate rubber plug by cutting a slit in the plug and running the 4 wire set through it. The bumper will have to be removed (don't have to take off bumper cover) by removing the 2 screws on each side of the bumper. Depending on how you route the harness through the metal bumper frame that is now exposed, and how long of a tag end you want, you may have to lengthen the 4 wire set with a splice, I did. You may be able to avoid any splice by mounting in the spare tire compartment. Trailer lights are bright, no dimming at all.41083

Great kit, very easy install in a 2008 Toyota Yaris 5-door Hatchback. Love the little lead-tester, that really made life easy, as did the snap-on connectors. I was a little unsure as to whether the snap-ons would work on the relatively thin wiring in the Yaris (much thinner than what comes with the harness). It seems to have worked fine, but perhaps a different snap-on connector would be better. 38168

what a nice easy install. I didn't even get instructions with mine and with the included 12 volt test light it was painless to find the leads I needed. it took more time to figure out how to run the pig tail out of the car than it was to connect the clearly labeled wires with the supplied connectors e adhesive on the back of the box sticks to any dry clean spot perfectly. . just make sure you do it right the first time. no second chances if you stuck it wrong. 38103

Right now I am only giving this a " Fairly Good" rating. It came with no directions, though it's pretty straight foward...Until it comes to splice into the vehicle wiring.I have not even looked at the light wiring yet on the vehicle I am installing this on(2010 Volkswagen New Beetle) but I do not know if the wiring in the beetle is color matched to the wiring in this kit. Kit includes everything you need including a little tester to find the proper wires. I put the black box under the driver side rear plastic that covers the taillights. The green wire was long enough to connect the right turn signal and stay hidden behind the rear interior plastic.30486

Hitch was excellent. Straight out of the box, it bolted directly on the car without any modification. The wire harness was another story. The wires on the vehicle are super fine and the T-connectors cut them so I needed to get creative with the wire connections. Other than that, I would recommend to everyone that "etrailer.com" delivers exactly what I ordered in a timely manner.30311

Bought this for a 2005 Honda Element. I would recommend the kit for a generic harness, but not for the 05 Element. In order to install it, it requires the removal of the rear trim, which also requires the removal of both rear seats. The 05 element has a trailer adapter built into it, which I didn't know prior to buying it. So if I had to do it again, I'd buy OEM or OEM equivalent so it plugs right in. While the honda kit requires some panel removal, I don't think it's quite as complicated as this kit requires.27729

It's too early to be certain, as my trailer is not wired up yet, but I think this worked out fine. Weird that it had no instructions with it, but the included test light and labeled wiring on the box made it not too hard to install. Wire lengths were fine, although not generous. I plan to run it out the trunk, right over the weatherstrip, as my trailer use will be occasional and short term. Otherwise it could be hard to come up with a non-destructive way to put the connector through the sheet-metal.25995

It includes a circuit tester! I am giving this one rating less than excellent because the wire to the right turn signal needs to be at least 6 inches longer. I had to get creative with the placement and routing to make it work and keep it out of harms way and a place where the box would not interfere with the trim installation. Otherwise the video was helpful and it was very easy to install. Very nice that the tester is included. 2009 Kia Rio525220

took a bit to figure out how to get it over both bumper screws. turned out i need to do the one opposite the exhaust 1st. had to disconnect the mount for the fuel line/filter. after installation the fuel line/filter mount plate doesn't fit into the frame but since the arm for the hitch goes through the fuel line/filter assembly it kinda doesn't matter, the hitch is holding everything up. getting those bolts and plates together seemed impossible at 1st. i ended up tying some box string around the tip of the bolt (wrapping around the threading), taped off the tip to keep the string on, and dabbed some oil onto the bolt. then i thread the string through the plate opening and shoved 1st the bolt then the plate into the access hole on the car frame. this way i was able to line up the plate hole and gentle work the bolt back to the hole, then vertical to drop through the opening. i had to use a thin allen key to move things around as well but it worked and honestly it was super easy, took 5 min/bolt including taping off the string. 25155

This product worked exactly as advertised- it spliced in well to my car's existing electrical system and provided the appropriate signals to the trailer. Combined with a shop manual for my car, it was trivial to set up and install. That said, I have some concerns about the long-term viability of the splice connectors used- it seems like a design that would allow corrosion to start in the electrical system. When I have time, I'm thinking of switching to a more robust solution that would probably involve soldered and sealed connections. That said, for a quick-and-dirty lighting solution, this kit works very well.23690

The video on how to install was excellent, showing you what wires on the harness are and where they go. The double sided tape was dryed up, so I removed it using Goof-Off, then I got some double sided tape from Sears and applied that. 20904

Nice kit. I really liked the tester that comes with it. I would suggest a new design to accomodate getting the wires from inside the trunk to the outside. Both the adapter and the harness connector are bulky and would require a larg hole to pass through. Maybe a round multi pin connector that mounts in the trunk floor panel. Then screw the connector to it and mount the harness plug cap on the hitch frame. ???17944

this kit was easy to install. the 2004 Alero has a black ground wire so no need to attach this ground wire in the kit to the frame. The intallastion video was helpful. the light on the tester that is included in the kit is very dim but you can see it if you can shade the bulb somewhat. 17936

Works great and as advertised. Watch an online tutorial to simplify the process. On my Avalon, the easiest way was to not probe the wires but disconnect the connector in the vehicle wiring harness close to the left tail light, inside the trunk under the carpeted trim and do the circuit testing from there. Tester comes with the converter, along with instructions. 17655

new improved modulite trailer light converter. they did away with the direct wire to the battery which is good. i gave up on the compression and pressure connectors (here in MA) they all turned to dust after outside winter storage. i went back to plain wire to wire covered with electrical tape. we'll see how that works. everything now works for my annual trip to the lake. 16631

I have a 2005 Suzuki Forenza Wagon. I tried to get the hitch wiring installed by U-Haul (don't do it for my car) and a Suzuki Dealer (couldn't or wouldn't figure it out). Finally I found this wiring kit. I watched the video on the web page and gave it a try. Done in 45 minutes - exceptionally simple. Tester worked great identifying the right wire to connect to. Why oh why did I just not do this in the first place. Also the eTrailer site did a great job recommending the right part for my particualr make/model of car.13786
