Today on our 2012 Jeep Liberty well be installing the Tow Ready T1 connector, part number 118554. First to begin our installation well open up the rear cargo door. Well need to remove the fasteners that secure the taillight housing in place. Starting here on the drivers side, well go ahead and remove the two fasteners and then gently pry the taillight housing away from its current position, being careful not to break the alignment tabs underneath. Now well go ahead and remove the taillight assembly by pressing on the locking tab for the connector and removing it from the assembly. Well go ahead and set it aside for reinstallation later.
Next well go ahead and repeat the same process on the passengers side. Now well start making our connections. With the yellow and brown connector well take the socket and plug it into the connector on the drivers side, plugging in line with the manufacturers wiring. Then we can take the red and green wire connector along with our four pole and feed it down between the bumper cover and the body, and or sheet metal of the vehicle. Next well go ahead and attach the power wire for our converter box.
Using the black wire coming out of the converter, yellow butt connector provided with our install kit well go ahead and crimp the two together. Then well take the extra length of black wire provided with our install kit, strip back one end and install it into the butt connector and crimp it down. Now with that done well go ahead and take a clean cloth and clean off the sheet metal just below the taillight assembly. Once its cleaned we can peel back the two way adhesive and secure the converter box directly to the sheet metal. Now well go ahead and take our power wire and follow the same route as our red and green wire connector and four pole down between the bumper cover and the body of the vehicle.
Next well go ahead and take the white wire with the preattached ring terminal which will be the ground wire for our converter box, and secure it to the body of the vehicle, using a self-tapping screw. Locating an area where the sheet metal doubles up can make for a great ground location. Now with the ground secured, well go ahead and take our taillight assembly and lug it into the opposite connector of our new Tow Ready harness. Now we can go ahead and reinstall the taillight assembly. Now with the drivers side reinstalled well go ahead and get underneath the vehicle and start routing our wires over to the passeners side.
Keep in mind when routing your wires you want to stay away from excessive heat, such as the exhaust, or moving components such as steering or suspension. As we route the red and green wire connector along with our four pole that will go to the center of the vehicle and down to the hitch, as were routing them along well use zip ties to secure it up underneath the vehicle. Now that weve got our red and green wire connector over on the passengers side well go ahead and feed it up behind the bumper cover and the body of the vehicle below the taillight assembly. Now with our wire secured underneath well go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look and move back to the passengers taillight assembly. Here well go ahead and take the red and green wire and zip tie or secure it to the manufacturers wiring. Then we can make our connection with the T connector and the manufactures wiring. Now for our extra wire well go ahead and bundle it up and use a zip tie to secure it, and then take the socket and plug it into the back of the taillight assembly. With that done well go ahead and reinstall the taillight assembly. Next well get back underneath the vehicle and start routing the power wire up to the front of the vehicle into the engine compartment and up to the battery. As we route our wire well go through the frame when possible and zip tie as necessary. When routing through the frame well use a pull wire, or in this case well be using a piece of air tubing to assist in routing our wire. Now that weve got the wire routed up toward the front of the vehicle well need to add a couple of loom clamps to assist in securing our wire. Well be using the Redline metal loom clamp, part number A0500 along with a couple self-tapping screws. Now that weve gone through the second loom clamp well go ahead and feed it up into the engine bay, and then pull it up to the top of the engine compartment. Here we can take a zip tie and secure it, and then route it over to the battery. Now well go ahead and remove the battery cover and prepare our fuse holder. In this application when preparing our fuse holder, well go ahead and cut the fuse holder off center to leave enough length so that we can travel up through the positive battery terminal cover. After we cut it, well go ahead and strip back both sides and on the short side well add the yellow butt connector and secure it. The long side well feed up through the battery cover and then secure our ring terminal to it. Now that weve got the ring terminal secured well go ahead and remove the nut on the positive battery post, install the ring terminal and then resecure the nut. Now well go ahead and finish routing the fuse holder and reinstall the positive battery cover. Next well take our fuse holder and the black power wire and cut off any excess from the power wire. Then well strip it back and attach it to the yellow butt connector. Once weve made this connection well once again go ahead and wrap up the yellow butt connector and wire with some black electrical tape. With that done well go ahead and install the fuse and the fuse cap. This will complete the install of our Tow Ready T1 connector, part number 118554 on our 2012 Jeep Liberty.

The hardest part of wiring the light was getting the wire to the positive post of the battery. All together it took me about 3.5 hrs, I did it by myself. Other than that, everything works fine. I am very pleased with the result. All lights on my Jeep and trailer work. 171417

I hooked it up by myself just fine. Not clear on which directions to follow. The paper directions says to disconnect the negative battery, the online doesn't. I disconnected my battery on a 2008 Jeep Liberty and now I am having computer problems that the dealership cannot figure out. It says "error" on the odometer and might cost me a pretty penny.
