Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your Jeep Liberty's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your Jeep Liberty's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your Jeep Liberty operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Today on our 2012 Jeep Liberty well be installing the Curt T connector vehicle wiring harness, part number 55027. To begin our install well need to open the cargo door and remove the two bolts on either side holding the taillight assemblies in place. We can then pull rearward, away from the vehicle on the taillight assembly to disconnect it from the vehicle. With the taillight assembly undone from the vehicle well go ahead and unplug the connector from the back of the taillight assembly. Now that we have both taillight assemblies undone and out of the way well take our T connector harness and feed the side with the yellow and red wires up from underneath the vehicle through the large opening into the taillight assembly area on the vehicle. Well then take the one end and plug it into the factory harness.

Well now take the white wire with the ringed eyelet and using the included self-tapping screw well secure it to the body of the vehicle. Next well find a suitable spot for our module box. Once there, well clean it off and attach the box. Well peel off the cover of the double-sided adhesive and sick it into place. We can then take our taillight assembly, plug it back in to the other side of our T connector and reassemble it back into the vehicle.

Well now go underneath the vehicle here where well take our green wire as well as our four pole harness and work our way toward the center of the vehicle. Well need to make sure that the wiring is secured between the bumper and the bumper supports. Included with the T connector kit are a few zip ties to help you do this. Here in the center of the vehicle were going to go ahead take our four pole harness and drop it down to the hitch opening. Well continue across the vehicle with the green wire to the passengers side taillight assembly.

Up here in the passengers side well again connect it to the vehicle harness and the other side will connect to the taillight assembly. We can then reassemble the passengers side taillight assembly to the vehicle. Well move back down to our four pole harness and attach the four pole cover included with the T connector set. With the cover on well just make sure that its secured so that it doesnt drag on the ground when not connected. That will complete our install of the Curt T Connector vehicle wiring harness, part number 55027 on our 2012 Jeep Liberty..
