Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 1999 Ford Ranger

Today on our 1999 Ford Ranger, we'll install the custom fit vehicle wiring harness 4-pole connector, part number 118241. To begin our install, we'll first need to locate the manufacturer's tow port. For this application, it's behind the bumper here on the driver's side. To gain access to it, we'll just take a trim panel tool or flat blade screwdriver and pry the connector free from the secured point behind the bumper. Then once we have access to the connector, we'll need to remove the weather cap. To do that, we'll press in the locking tab and pull it out from the connector.

We'll go ahead and check the mating surface to make sure it's clean and free from any dirt, dust, or corrosion buildup. Once we've done that, I recommend to use some Dielectric Grease on this connection point. We'll be using the Edelman Dielectric Grease, part number 11755. Now with our Dielectric Grease on and the connector ready, we'll go ahead and plug in the new tow-ready harness. We'll make sure we firmly press it into place, and that it locks into position.

We'll also secure the 4-pole harness here to the hitch, and now we're ready to secure our wiring harness. Using some black zip ties, we'll go ahead and secure the connector and wiring behind the bumper, and then we'll go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. Now that we've completed installing our new 4-pole harness, we'll go ahead and check it with a test light. To do that, we'll take the ground clamp and put it on the ground stud of the 4-pole connector, which will test the ground circuit, and then we'll run through the lighting sequence, checking the running, left blinker, right blinker, and brake connection points. And with that done, this will complete our installation and testing of the tow-ready custom fit vehicle wiring 4-pole connector, part number 118241, on our 1999 Ford Ranger..

This was a very easy install on my 2001 explorer. Just watched the video first 78895

I only use them a couple times a years, still work fine.

Harness came quickly and appears to be OEM harness as described. Original harness connection was behind the left tail lite. Capsule was removed (two screws at top of tail-lite). Connection was done and cable routed and positioned under bumper in less than 5 minutes. I presume the old harness had some corrosion as this did the trick. I did purchase a flexible cable protector to put around the harness wiring to prevent damage. It took me longer to write this review than it did to fix my problem. 109950

Using some electrical contact grease, like part 11755, will help keep moisture out and drastically slow corrosion.

The product ordered is a "trailer tow wiring harness" used for a 1995 Ford Explorer so that the unusual connector Ford used can connect to a 4 prong flat (common trailer connector). The correct item was sent quickly and the order process was simple and straight forward. Notification of order acceptance, preperation, and shipping were sent by e-mail and they were posted promptly. The service could not have been better 91799

The website is very easy to use. The video showing how to install the wiring assembly was very helpful for both showing me how to do it myself and for convincing me that it was the correct part. Well done! Your follow through was also exceptional. You told me and showed me where it was and when it would arrive, a great help. The part came today and I have already installed it! Thank you very much! 6101

Plug and play. Ford made hooking up trailer lights for the Explorer easy. If you have this harness kit, just unhook the left rear taillight, pull it out, plug this into the connector that's on your truck's wiring, and you are done. Beginning to end, it takes about three minutes to wire your truck for trailer lights with this. 163803

I bought this harness for my 99' Explorer and it worked beautifully, plug right in on driver side rear inside tail light to connect to my tow lights or trailer. The harness is long enough the reach the center of the bumper with out a problem. Great shipping price and time, only 5 days to get to Alaska great job!!!! 103864

I'm really excited about this product, the old Ranger I got for the boy has the matching plug up under the bed, it looks to be of high quality and I was not looking forward to splicing wires on this installation. This will solve that issue. I am very pleased to have run across this wiring solution. 43363

Product works as advertised, plugged right in to stock harness. Last time I checked for a previous Mountaineer I owned 5 years ago, the Ford dealer wanted about $30 for the same part. Also included were two wire ties which was nice even though I have my own. Will do business here again. 145258

Very easy to install. Product is very easy to install if you have the towing package but it is not very long. You will need a long cable on your trailer or get an extension. It only reachs the bumper on my Explorer. Maybe the length should be stated in the product description. 898

So glad to have found this. I have a female connector that came with my 2000 Explorer. The trailer "professionals" in my area only knew about an adapter kit (4X the cost and a lot more DIY time). This installed as easily as plugging in a lamp. Two minute install time. 86701

Plugged right into factory tow package. Installation instructions direct Explorer owners are instructed to use right side (passenger) plug, but it is actually the left side (driver) plug. Other than that, very easy installation that took no more than 5 minutes. 186633

Works perfect. Went to the local auto store and bought a generic trailer wiring kit for $30. Saw the plug adapter under my bumper, searched online, and found the exact fit plug for the adapter at half the price - delivered. Just plugged it in and on my way. 188779

Do you have a question about this Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring?

  • Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1997 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package
  • First, you need to find out If your Ford Explorer is equipped with a tow-package port (90 percent are). If so use, item # 118241, which is much simpler to hook up. The plug is usually located in the rear of the vehicle on the driver side. However, the plug can also be found on the passenger side and sometimes even on both sides. The small grey plug is usually covered with a red nipple, but the colors and styles of caps do vary. If your Explorer is not equipped with the factory tow package...

  • Location of Trailer Wiring Harness Plug on a 1998 Ford Explorer With Factory Tow Package
  • It sounds as if the connection you found is one that is located on the opposite side of the vehicle. If your 1998 model Explorer has the factory tow package installed the correct connector for the trailer wiring harness, # 118421, is sometimes on the drivers side or the passengers side. There is a very similar connector that the harness will not plug into on the opposite side in most every case. Go to the other side and locate the connector there and I am confident your wiring harness...

You should see an exposed male connection point that is the ground circuit. Next to the exposed terminal there is a female connection that is the taillight circuit. If you do NOT have the tow package, you will need to use # 118345. Then, install the # 37185 4-pole to 7-way adapter. The adapter will plug into the 4-pole provided by the # 118241, leaving some remaining wires that might need to be connected. The white wire needs to be grounded to the vehicle frame, and the...

The difference is that the # 70181 is a round tube hitch that has a higher towing capacity of 500 lbs tongue weight and 5000 GVWR, whereas the # 87161 is a square tube hitch that has capacities of 350 lbs tongue weight and 3500 lbs GVWR. You may also be interested in purchasing a Ball Mount, part # 2923. If your Ranger has the tow package you would need a Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring...

  • Tow Package Fuse Locations for a 1998 Ford Expedition
  • I pulled up a picture of a fuse box of a 1998 Ford Expedition and it looks like position 1 is the trailer tow running lamp relay and back up light relay. Position 16 is trailer battery charge circuit. Position 28 is brake controller relay. Aside from that you would want to check all towing related fuses using the diagram on the fuse box lid.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Needed for a 1997 Ford Explorer with Factory Tow Wiring Harness
  • If you Ford Explorer has the factory tow package installed, then the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the Ford Explorer, 1997, item # 118241, will work on your vehicle. We carry this item for you to purchase. To determine if the factory tow package is active on your vehicle you should use a circuit tester and test the connection you have found to make sure that the left turn/stop, right turn/stop and tail light functions are working. If any of these functions are not active you...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2001 Ford Explorer 4-Door LTD
  • If your 2001 Ford Explorer came with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector then you would use # 118241 to install a 4-Way trailer connector. You can check to see if that round plug under the vehicle is live or not by testing it with a circuit tester, # 3808, while someone goes through the lighting functions in the cab of the vehicle. If that plug shows power then you can use # 118241. If that plug does not show power then to add a 4-Way you will need wither # 118344 if you...

  • Troubleshooting Factory Trailer Wiring on 1998 Ford Ranger with Left Side Functions Inactive
  • You can try replacing the factory 4-pole harness on your 1998 Ranger with part # 118241 from Tow Ready. This has a round connector on one end to plug in to the OEM wiring under the vehicle on the driver's side. If the problem is downstream of that point then this should fix you up. You can also check to make sure that any fuses labeled trailer or towing are okay. If there is a problem in the wiring upstream of that connection point then that may be tougher to find and correct. You can...

  • Trailer Connector for 1992 Ford Explorer With Tow Package
  • You're correct, the connector you found under the truck sure looks like it would fit, but I can't confirm the fit of the # 118241. I spoke with my contact in the Tech Services department at Tow Ready, he believes that before 1995, that connector you found was pinned out differently. If that's the case, the # 118241 won't work for your vehicle. I'd recommend you use the # 118324, which is a confirmed fit. If you'd like to see an installation video, click the provided link.

  • Where to Connect the Tow Package Wiring Harness 118241 on a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT 4 Door
  • When installing the Tow Package Wiring Harness, item # 118241, on a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT 4 door you will need to use the tow harness connector on the right side of the vehicle. The connector on the other side, while it looks very similar, will not accept the connector for the Tow Package harness. If the connector on your vehicle does not work or will not accept the connector on the Tow Package Wiring Harness, item # 118241, you will need the T-One Wiring Harness, item # 118345, to...

  • Where is the Factory Connection Point to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1995 Ford Explorer
  • If your 1995 Ford Explorer came with the factory tow package then the connector on the vehicle to plug the wiring harness into is located up behind the rear bumper on the passenger side or drivers side. I have linked a video showing an installation of harness # 118241 on a 1996 Explorer and the installation will be very similar on your 1995 model. If your Explorer did not come with the factory tow package then you will need a different harness # 118345. It plugs in line with the vehicle...

  • Which Trailer Wiring Harness for 1999 Ford Explorer Sport
  • In order for the # 118241 to work correctly, the plug under the vehicle that you located needs to be active. You can determine this by using a circuit tester like part # 40376. Have a helper activate the taillight functions one by one as you test the pins of the plug under the vehicle. If the plug shows voltage as each taillight function is active, you can indeed use the # 118241. If the plug isn't active, you'd use the # 118345.

  • Trailer Wiring on a 1997 Ford Explorer Stopped Working
  • If the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118345, was working on your 1997 Ford Explorer but then suddenly stopped working, the first thing I would check is the fuse that came with the converter. The power wire should be connected to the vehicle battery via the fuse and fuse holder. If you find that fuse is blown you will need to replace it. However, if there was a short on the trailer wiring, trailer side, or corrosion in the connectors on either side, it could blow the fuse again. Loss...

  • How to Determine if a 1998 Ford Explorer has the Automatic Ride Control Feature
  • The easiest way to determine if your 1998 Ford Explorer has the factory air leveling system (automatic ride control) is to call a Ford dealer and have them look up the VIN in their computer system to see how that vehicle was equipped. If the system is supposed to work automatically then I would think that you would have heard an on-board air compressor kick on at some point to level the vehicle. You also may want to check the vehicle owners manual because sometimes they will list the...
