Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation- 2000 Ford Explorer

Today we are working on a 2000 Ford Explorer. We will be installing Tow Ready T-One Connector part number 118241. With this particular application, the simple plug in place style. We will locate the vehicle tow connector, brand new out of the factory. There will be a plug on this that will need to be removed first. With our application, the plug has already been removed. We can simply take our new Tow Ready Connector and see that it matches up with the manufacturer plug and connect them together. We are now ready to route our 4 pole connector. 0:31

When routing your wire you want to make sure you stay from pinch points such as the moving suspension or heat such as the exhaust. We are going to go here up above the bumper structure and route it over to our new hitch. We will use a couple of zip-ties to secure my wire and our new 4 pole connector is installed. As I zip-tie the wires in place, I will just cut off the ends. That completes the installation of our Tow Ready T-One Connector part number 118241.

Harness came quickly and appears to be OEM harness as described. Original harness connection was behind the left tail lite. Capsule was removed (two screws at top of tail-lite). Connection was done and cable routed and positioned under bumper in less than 5 minutes. I presume the old harness had some corrosion as this did the trick. I did purchase a flexible cable protector to put around the harness wiring to prevent damage. It took me longer to write this review than it did to fix my problem. 109950

Comments

Using some electrical contact grease, like part 11755, will help keep moisture out and drastically slow corrosion.

The product ordered is a "trailer tow wiring harness" used for a 1995 Ford Explorer so that the unusual connector Ford used can connect to a 4 prong flat (common trailer connector). The correct item was sent quickly and the order process was simple and straight forward. Notification of order acceptance, preperation, and shipping were sent by e-mail and they were posted promptly. The service could not have been better 91799

The website is very easy to use. The video showing how to install the wiring assembly was very helpful for both showing me how to do it myself and for convincing me that it was the correct part. Well done! Your follow through was also exceptional. You told me and showed me where it was and when it would arrive, a great help. The part came today and I have already installed it! Thank you very much! 6101

I bought this harness for my 99' Explorer and it worked beautifully, plug right in on driver side rear inside tail light to connect to my tow lights or trailer. The harness is long enough the reach the center of the bumper with out a problem. Great shipping price and time, only 5 days to get to Alaska great job!!!! 103864

I'm really excited about this product, the old Ranger I got for the boy has the matching plug up under the bed, it looks to be of high quality and I was not looking forward to splicing wires on this installation. This will solve that issue. I am very pleased to have run across this wiring solution. 43363

Product works as advertised, plugged right in to stock harness. Last time I checked for a previous Mountaineer I owned 5 years ago, the Ford dealer wanted about $30 for the same part. Also included were two wire ties which was nice even though I have my own. Will do business here again. 145258

Very easy to install. Product is very easy to install if you have the towing package but it is not very long. You will need a long cable on your trailer or get an extension. It only reachs the bumper on my Explorer. Maybe the length should be stated in the product description. 898

So glad to have found this. I have a female connector that came with my 2000 Explorer. The trailer "professionals" in my area only knew about an adapter kit (4X the cost and a lot more DIY time). This installed as easily as plugging in a lamp. Two minute install time. 86701

  • Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1997 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package

  • Trailer Wiring Harnesses for a 1997 Ford Explorer

A converter for your vehicle requires a direct connection to the vehicle battery to protect your vehicles sensitive wiring. Bypassing the modulite is not recommended for this reason. If the modulite is damaged, there are no internal serviceable parts so a replacement is the best option. If your Explorer...

You may also be interested in purchasing a Ball Mount, part # 2923. If your Ranger has the tow package you would need a Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Needed for a 1997 Ford Explorer with Factory Tow Wiring Harness
  • If you Ford Explorer has the factory tow package installed, then the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the Ford Explorer, 1997, item # 118241, will work on your vehicle. We carry this item for you to purchase. To determine if the factory tow package is active on your vehicle you should use a circuit tester and test the connection you have found to make sure that the left turn/stop, right turn/stop and tail light functions are working. If any of these functions are not active you...

  • Installing 7-Way Trailer Connector on 1998 Ford Explorer to Power Interior Trailer Lights
  • You can certainly add a 7-way connector to your Explorer. Assuming that your Explorer has the tow package, you can begin with the # 118241 4-pole harness that you referenced. If you do NOT have the tow package, you will need to use # 118345. Then, install the # 37185 4-pole to 7-way adapter. The adapter will plug into the 4-pole provided by the # 118241, leaving some remaining wires that might need to be connected. The white wire needs to be grounded to the vehicle frame, and the...

  • Trailer Wiring on a 1997 Ford Explorer Stopped Working
  • If the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118345, was working on your 1997 Ford Explorer but then suddenly stopped working, the first thing I would check is the fuse that came with the converter. The power wire should be connected to the vehicle battery via the fuse and fuse holder. If you find that fuse is blown you will need to replace it. However, if there was a short on the trailer wiring, trailer side, or corrosion in the connectors on either side, it could blow the fuse again. Loss...

  • Can Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch 75096 be Installed at Home on a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT 4-Door
  • I am confident that you could install the Draw-Tite trailer hitch, # 75096, at home in your driveway or garage. If you have the proper tools (listed in the instructions link; a torque wrench is also required) and an assistant, installation should not be very difficult. We rate installation difficulty based on the estimated installation time on a scale of 1 to 10. We have rated this installation a 3 which means it should take at least 30 minutes to install. I have included a link to the...

  • What is Required to Tow a 1750kg Trailer With a 1999 Ford Explorer
  • If your trailer weighs 1750kg, or around 3900lbs, when it is loaded, the # 70647 hitch would be a good choice for your application, as it is rated for 5000lbs towing capacity. However, if you already have a trailer hitch installed from the factory on your 1999 Ford Explorer, I would recommend checking the capacity. If the capacity rating on the factory hitch was high enough, at 4000 or 5000lbs, you could just use the hitch you already have installed. You will also need to wire the...

  • How to Determine if the Connector on a 1998 Ford Explorer is the Right One for Tow Ready Wiring
  • It really looks like you found the correct connector to use to install the Tow Ready Wiring Harness # 118241, to be certain you could use a circuit tester like our part # 3808 and test the terminals for voltage when the tail light circuits are applied. This will tell you if the circuits are actually live on the connector you have found.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for 1996 Ford Explorer
  • Does your Explorer have the Factory tow package? If so, there is a connector under and behind the rear bumper usually on the passenger side of the vehicle that the wiring harness, part # 118241 would plug into. If your Explorer does not have the tow package, wiring a 4-way connector directly into the tail light wiring will not work. Your Explorer carries the signal for the brake lamp and the turn signals on a separate circuit, the trailer has both these functions combined on one circuit....

  • Wiring Harness Needed for 2000 Ford Explorer XLT
  • If your Explorer was originally equipped with a factory 7-way, it would have a US car connector underneath the rear bumper. If it was not equipped with the 7-way, it will have a smaller gray connector that looks like the one in the photo I provided. If you have the US car connector, you'd use the # 20119 you mentioned. If you have the smaller connector, you'd use # 118241, which would provide a 4-pole trailer connector. If your trailer uses a 7-way trailer connector and has electric...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 1997 Ford Explorer
  • Most likely yes, but the only way to know for certain would be for you to contact a Ford dealership with the VIN of your 1997 Ford Explorer and they will be able to tell you for sure. If you have the tow package all you would need for trailer wiring would be the part # 118241. The wiring harness part # 118345 that you referenced will work either way. Whether or not you have the tow package this harness will work for you.

  • Best Trailer Wiring Options for 1997 Ford Explorer
  • To install a 4-pole trailer connector on your 1997 Ford Explorer, you'll need the Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118345, unless your Explorer has the tow package, in which case you'd need the # 118241. The # 119324 wiring harness you referenced fits 1991-1994 Explorer models only, so it wouldn't fit your vehicle. Installing the 118345 involves plugging the converter inline between the taillight assemblies and the vehicle taillight wiring harness. You'll need to run a...
