Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 1994 Ford Explorer

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 1994 Ford Explorer

Today on this 1994 Ford Explorer we're going to install part number 118324 from Tow-Ready. First thing we need to do is go ahead and open the back hatch and get inside the vehicle. Now we're going to need access to the jack storage compartment. We'll remove the panel and then we'll go ahead and remove the jack itself. Next we're going to go ahead and remove the tail light. There's two screws on top we'll have to remove so that we can get access tot he grommet that's on the inside because eventually we're going to run our wire to the outside.

Well go ahead and loosen up the grommet and push it open. We're going to push it towards the inside where it's free. Then we'll take a set of tin snips and a knife and we'll make a notch in it so we can run our wires back through. Now well go ahead and find the location for our T connector. Theres a matching gray connector mounted to the sheet metal inside.

Now there's a row of relays in this applications so we're going to just temporarily remove the relays from it's mounting position. We're going to use the trim tool to pop it loose and just rotate it out our side. The trim panel tool will be used to pop the connector away from the sheet metal as well. Now we'll get into position where we can work with it and then we'll go ahead and use a small blade screwdriver to go ahead and release the latches on the side. There's one on each side and then we can go ahead and pull them apart.

Now we'll take our T connector and put it in between each side. We'll snap on in first and it'll snap the other side in. now we can go head and reattach the connector and put the relay back in place. Now we'll go ahead and run our wire from the inside to the outside. We'll pull it out through the tail light area and run it through the notch on our grommet.

Then we'll go ahead and push the grommet back into place. At this point we can go ahead and reinstall the jack and the cover. We'll take our wire from the four pole and run it up from the bottom behind the bumper. Then we'll go ahead and reinstall the tail light. Next we'll simply just go ahead and route our wire over to the center of the hitch. We'll use some extra zip ties to help attach it tot he hitch and to the bumper to keep it secure. With everything installed we'll go ahead and test it out with a test light. First we'll go ahead and take the ground lead and clip it to the ground on our four pole. That will be the exposed pole. Next we'll go ahead and check our ground wire which will be the running light circuit. We'll go ahead and check our green that's going to be right turn. Yellow wire will be left turn. Now brake signal will be a constant yellow and green wire. Looks like everything works. Now we can go ahead and try it on a trailer. With that that'll finish it for our install of part number 118324 from Tow-Ready on our 1994 Ford Explorer.

  • Installation of T-1 Vehicle Wiring Harness on 1991 Ford Explorer
  • The T-1 Connector would plug inline into the wiring harness leading to the rear tail light assemblies. This harness is located in the jack storage compartment. Locate the wiring harness connector, and disconnect it. One end of the T-1 harness would plug into each end of the harness you have disconnected. This will create a bit of slack in the wiring harness.

  • Tow Ready Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 1994 Ford Explorer
  • The Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # 118324 that you referenced would be the correct trailer wiring harness for your 1994 Ford Explorer. If you were to install this product on your vehicle it would provide you with a functioning 4-way that would work in replacement of the factory 4-way you have that is not functioning correctly. I attached installation instructions for this product for you to check out also. The first thing I would check would be to see if the towing package fuse coul

  • Troubleshooting 1993 Ford Explorer that Blinkers are Hyper-Flashing after Trailer Wiring Install
  • I spoke with my contact at Tow Ready and he informed me that if your blinkers are flashing quickly with your trailer being connected you will need to replace the flasher unit in your 1993 Ford Explorer. For that I recommend you get a Heavy Duty Flasher # 39552. If the hyper-flashing occurs without a trailer connected my contact recommended you make sure that the # 118324 harness is making good contact. You could unplug it and plug it back in to see if that fixes it.
