Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2011 BMW X

Today on a 2011 BMW X5, we're going to install part number 119190KIT. All right. First thing we're goingto do is get inside the back of the vehicle and remove some panels, so we have some working room. Firstoff, we'll go ahead and remove the panels on the side that go behind the tail light, then we'll go aheadand remove the panel and the covering for the battery. Okay. Starting on our driver side, we'll go ahead and remove the wiring going to the tail light.

There's asmall tab on the bottom that you have to push. We'll push it and then we'll go ahead and release it fromthe tail light. Okay. Next, we'll go ahead and install a ground for our testing and we'll also use this groundfor our module as well. All right.

Now, we'll go ahead and take the included tester and we'll ground it toour ground screw, and then we'll go ahead and test the wire harness. Okay. We'll start looking for leftturn signal first. All right. Testing our wires, it looks like blue with green stripe will be our left turn signal, so we'll goahead and use a quick connector and then we'll go ahead and connect that to the yellow wire of ourmodule.

All right. Next, we'll go ahead and look for the running light circuit. Now, at testing we found that yellow with the black stripe, will be our running light circuit, so we'll go ahead and use the brown wire from the module to hook up to that wire. All right. Next, we'll go ahead and look for the brakes signal.

Okay. Our brake signal looks like a black wire with the yellow stripe. We'll hook up a red wire from themodule to that. Okay. Next, we'll go ahead and take our white wire, it will ground it to our screw and thenwe'll go to the passenger side and look for the right turn signal. We'll go ahead and disconnect the wireharness like we did on the driver side. We'll take the tester and ground it to the factory ground behind thepanel. All right. We'll test it. It looks like the right turn signal will be blue for brown stripe. We'll go ahead and route our green wire over to that side and hook the two together. At this point, we'llgo ahead and re-install the electrical connectors going back to the tail lights. We'll go ahead and run ourpower wire and the module up to the battery. We're unto our up to the passenger side of the battery. After the wire, we'll go ahead and connect up our fuse holder. We'll cut the fuse holder in half. On one end, we'll get the ring terminal and the other end, we'll get the buck connector. The ring terminal goes to the positive side of the battery and we'll use the buck connector for the black wire to connect to the fuse holder. Okay, we'll run our wires over to the positive side of the battery, then we'll go ahead and attach it to the battery, then we'll go ahead and install our fuse in the fuse holder. We'll go ahead and take a few moments to zip tie our wires safe in place and also find a good spot to attach our module. Okay. Now to attach our module, there's not many good options with the module, doesn't have adhesives or anything like that, so we're actually going to use two extra-long zip ties that do not come with the kit and we're going to zip tie it to the wire harness. Now, it's always a good practice to mount the module is to have the epoxy side, where the wires go in, have it always to pointing down towards the ground. Okay. We'll use the zip ties and we'll just attach it to wire harness and hold it in place. Now, we'll go ahead and tidy up the rest of our wires. Okay. Now, we can go ahead and install the interior panels and our installation, we're finished. Now, to use a wire harness, all you got to do is open up the hatch, pull it out and then go ahead shoot the hitch on the wire, just make sure we stay away from the latch. The Weather Seal is thick enough for it won't hurt the wire and when you're not using it, it can be stored inside and out of the weather. Okay, with that'll finish for install part number 119190KIT from Tow Ready.

Bought this for the 2011 BMW X3 3.5. Very easy to install; it took me around 45 minutes. I didn't even have to remove the taillights since the taillight wires pass behind the pop out panels inside the BMW. It works fine, no warning lights or other electrical problems from the BMW vehicle status monitor. The only thing you will need in additional to the kit was a metric nut to fasten the terminal to the bolt on the battery terminal (it was either a 5 or 6mm nut) and you will need to extend the green wire that goes to the right tail light. It is barely long enough to reach and I was concerned about stretching it without any slack so I added a foot to it and tie wrapped it to battery cables. (You will need a piece of 16 ga wire and 1 butt splice connector for this).21588

Could not be easier to install this unit in the factory mounting holes. Used a dremel to remove the factory scored cover in the bumper cover then bolt it on. Twenty minute job. Note my VW Tiguan already had a trailer wiring set up in place so i should not have ordered a wiring kit. Check first to see if you are pre wired.41623

From what I gather you remove the plastic cover dremel under the rear bumper center, attach the hitch with the supplied hardware. Please explain about the wiring again. I have a Tiguan SE, and heard that the wiring might be ready for installing. Does it already have the plug to go into the trailer harness? 2013 Tiguan Thanks

Some of the Tiguans are pre-wired with a 4-pole trailer connector or are pre-wired for a plug-in trailer connector that is available at the dealer. You can find out for sure by either calling VW and giving them the VIN and they can tell you or you can head to the dealership and they can help you determine if the vehicle is pre-wired.

Product is working great. I would advise taking it to a professional car audio place to install just to make sure they do it right. The trailer hitch people were a bit scared to do it because BMW electrical can be tricky but a quality car audio place who have actually worked on BMW's is def. the way to go. 13854

I have an 04 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab SLT 5.7 with the typical "no power to the yellow wire" for my trailer wiring harness. All lights on the truck worked and right side trailer lights worked. The yellow wire supplies the left turn and brake lights and wouldn't function. All Dodge forums say problem is in the fuse block in the engine compartment, a $400-$900 replacement depending on how you get the part. My truck was no different and I wasn't spending that kind of money for trailer lights. Saw a guy on one of the forums purchased this same trailer wiring harness. I just finished installing and it fixed everything. I now have trailer lights that work and even wired in my tailgate led light strip. Everything works perfectly and for under $100.00. The shipping was quick and instructions straight forward and for the price you can't beat it. Best part is the system is circuit protected, so it will protect my truck in the future from screwing up the circuit boards in my fuse block if you happen to tow a trailer with a short in the wiring harness. I highly recommend etrailer.com and this wiring harness.10058

I bought a Hidden Hitch and Wiring Kit for my Volvo XC90... Fast shipping from Etrailer... Great Product... Hitch was a little tricky to manuver into place but once I had it up there the bolt holes lined right up... For the wiring I used the Video on Etrailers web site. It was very helpful in knowing what to do.. If i had one thing to change I would suggest putting a vehicle wireing guide in the packs. Although the video was dead on I did have to stop working on the Volvo to come in and watch the video.. But all in all a Great experience... I will order again from Etrailer.. :) 7467

Partly Works on 2007 VW Rabbit This wiring harness was suggested for the 2007 VW Rabbit via the adviser on this site. I ended up having the shop where I bought my trailer go ahead and install this wiring kit. There were problems... After 2 days and many phone calls between etrailer, towready, and sequent towing (manufacturer), it was found that the left and right turn signals could not be wired to the Rabbits rear multiplexed rear lights. In the end, I had to leave the shop with working running and brake lights, but had to run two wires to each of the turn signals at the front of the car (that aren't multiplexed).1432

Really nicely put together kit, first class parts. I did not even know that there was a danger of drawing down the car's battery by tapping right into the cars wires. This kit protects the car's circuits by the use of it's black box. Also another first class act by e-trailer. Wonderful amount of info, videos etc for the install. I received the order a mere three days after the order and two days before it was scheduled. First class act all around.66984

I had no problems installing the wiring kit. I found the instruction video to be very detailed and helpful. However, I had to run to the store and get an additional green wire and the connector because green wire that comes off the kit is to short. All and all it took me an hour to install. 53903

It took some time and trouble to figure out how this correlates to the installation video (for the Curt model, which has fewer wires). Once the right wires were identified, it was very simple and straightforward. The system works like a charm, and I've already towed a U-Haul trailer. Depending on the vehicle, I would recommend getting some 3/8" wire loom ($1.99 @ Home Depot) to protect the power wire from abrasion/cuts if you route it along your car's underbody. The included instructions (online & paper) are too generic to be useful, and the vehicle wiring codes (types of wire systems: 2-wire, 3-wire pulse, etc.) don't have a reference on the TowReady website. Moderate gripes, but some streamlining would've saved me unnecessary troubleshooting. All the parts you need are included, with extras just in case. 48370

Installed on my 2006 Jeep Liberty Diesel. I went with this instead of the one made for the vehicle for numerous reasons. 1) Higher Capacity 2) I have aftermarket LEDs 3) I had the smaller version of this one in my other car because the other brand with the correct connectors didn't work well with my LEDs. Only issue I had was where to mount it, since it is a little large. I found a nice spot under the tail light, which is mostly out of the weather. These are suppose to be weather proof, but with all electronics, I prefer it in as dry of a spot as possible.45397

The directions do not include any indication regarding which wires to the BMW taillights are for turn signals, brakes and running lights. I was not willing to guess so I'm going to take it to shop that knows BMW wiring to have them install. The installation example on the etrailer web site is for a Volvo and is no help at all.36879

This kit is a universal kit that can be wired into virtually any vehicle. Included in the kit is a circuit tester so that you can probe the wires behind your BMW tail lights to find out which lights serve which function. The installers use this process, as shown in the Volvo video, to determine which wires carry which function.

I studied the video for the 2012 Jetta TDI. When the kit arrived, the main box was a different style than what was in the videono adhesive tape for mounting just 2 slides with NO mount.. Even the battery location in the video was different than on my 2012 Jetta TDI. The low quality connectors actually CUT THROUGH the fine TDI tail light wires when crimping them on! It also was missing the 2nd butt connector for the fuse holder. Another trip to the auto parts store for connectors and more zip ties. 2 evenings and a Saturday morning were needed before it was installed right. Disappointed? Yes. It finally works and Im glad that the mess is over. Dont be fooled buy the slick video that the kit is either easy or complete. Id give the experience one star.

TowReady has updated the kit and box is now different than what it was when we shot the video on the 2012 Jetta. I am guessing that your kit looked like what was in the photo on the product page. I am sorry to hear that you had trouble with the installation, but I am glad you got it working.

I had a shop install this harness into my 2003 Volvo XC90 without any problems. It turns out that my Volvo has a harness in the passenger-side of the trunk well, where this harness can attach to, so that the main wiring harness does not have to be touched or spliced.36138

You have to have some basic understanding of auto wiring. This unit works great and saved me from installing a new $700.00 TIPM on my 2006 Dodge Ram 3500. The unit was sent out without the direction. One call on a Sunday to customer service and the lady I talked with was very helpful. . Poof directions in hand I started the project. Everything needed to do this project was supplied. Only thing I would change is the connectors. I used solder less with shrink-wrap (Minnesota winter salt) 21343

  • Tips for Wiring a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition with a 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness
  • What it seems to boil down to is if the vehicle has a 2 wire system or a 3 wire system. On a 2 wire system, you would ground the red wire with the white wire. This is because the stop and turn signal lights are combined on one circuit. On a 3 wire system, the turn signals are separate from the stop light so the wire needs to be connected to the dedicated brake light wire. What it sounds like is that the running light brown wire is getting connected to the wrong wire on the vehicle. VW wiri
