Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring HM48030 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM48030. This is the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector Socket for the vehicle end. It's going to feature an easy pull oversize grip. It's going to make connecting and disconnecting quick and easy. It's got the heavy duty housing with the included dust cover that's already pre-attached to the housing. That's designed to go over the connection points and protect them from the elements when your connector is not in use. The housing is also going to feature a couple mount holes.

That way you can connect this to the bracket or to the bumper of the vehicle. It's going to include a terminal grease packet and a self-tapping screw for a ground connection. Both of those are included. The terminal grease, we always recommend to use that on all electrical connections. That's going to help prevent any type of corrosion from settling in and causing any type of damage to the connections themselves. This is a 4-way flat socket for the vehicle side.

It's going to work with all 4-way flat connectors, a universal system. It's going to have the protective sleeve that goes from the back of the connector. Looks to be about 12 inches deep here on the wiring. That's going to prevent or insulate the wires from any type of wear or tear or damage. It's also going to help protect the wires at the plug from the weather.

The wires are going to measure 48 inches in total length. It's going to feature the pigtail leads. One wire is going to have your ring terminal attached to it. That's going to be for your ground connection. That's the black wire with the white stripe.

The black wire with the green stripe is going to be for your right turn and brake signal. The black wire with the yellow stripe is for left turn and brake, and then the black wire with the brown stripe is going to be for your tail lights. That's going to do it for today's review of part number HM48030. Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector Socket for the vehicle end. .

Product was awesome. My last two connectors have corroded so bad within a year that I constantly was having to take a wire brush and clean off the pins to get good contact. I'm waiting to see what the environmental cap does to eliminate me having to do this. Also bought the vehicle side. Would highly recommend this to anybody with a trailer hook-up. Only thing I would suggest is to make sure anybody purchasing also buys the splices since none come with the product. All in all, a great buy. Thanks! 91415

Comments

Using dielectric grease in the trailer connectors can also help reduce corrosion of the contacts.

Exactly what I needed. The Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel 90-Degree Harness is truly plug 'n play. Once you decide on the truck bed location for the new 7-pole plug and drill the hole the rest is simply snap together and you're done. The new harness fit perfectly with the factory 7-pin connector and had plenty of length to allow for the new plug to be mounted conveniently in the truck bed wall. No more cable hanging out over the tailgate. 95342

Comments

I have used the Hopkins Endurance 90-degree harness monthly over past year since installation. I have also used the factory bumper 7-pole plug as my towing needs required. Both connectors work every time indicating a solid fit and good contact between the factory 7-pin connector and the added Hopkins Endurance connector. Very pleased with both ease of installation and performance.

Pluses are that the product is exactly as advertised, arrived on time at nearly half the cost of the blue coiled wire i needed to replace. Minuses are length, (it works but it pulls harder on the connectors than it would if it was a foot longer) and the red translucent molded connectors soften while in hot climates. Only time will tell how long they last. (unfortunately the wire isn't long enough to replace connectors with aftermarket ones) If manufacturer would harden the red ends and add a foot to the overall length they'd have the perfect trailer connecter for your toad. 87184

Comments

Thanks Patrick for great customer service and the best follow-up weve seen. Following a year of nearly continuous use we have had no negative issues with our coiled wiring pigtail. To my surprise the molded connectors are showing no signs of wear and the marginal length, although stretched tight, has not been an issue. I still believe adding 10-12 inches of lenght to the coil would be an improvement but overall the product has proved to be a wise purchase that we would definitely buy again.

I was a little worried about the 8' foot being too long and dragging between my toad and RV, but the coils keep it up, it would have way too much tension beyond 7'. My RV came with a 7 blade connector so that end was no question and I choose the 6 Pole so I could take power lead across in case I ever had an application for power or charging. I did not hook up the power lead out of the toad connector, but could easily do so at any point in the future without needing a new connector or cable. The Toad end connector does light up and can be seen day or night. 80817

Worked for me. I used the six wire even though I only hooked up 4 for the toad. The RV 7 blade allowed me to bring a power lead to the toad if I ever need it for charging or power the Aux Brake unit. The bracket could be rotated in any direction and I found the best way was to rotate 90 degrees and install to the base plate. My toad grill made for a tight fit for both break-a-way switch and light connector, but they fit side by side with the addition of an L bracket for the break-a-way. The wiring connections seemed solid and water tight. Wired correct 1st time, No Problems. 80814

Excellent service from etrailer. The Flex-Coil Adapter is said to stretch to 8' but it is such a tight stretch that one end pulled out of the motorhome recepticle the first time I tried it. I probably didn't have it fully seated in the recepticle and that the tightness of the coil will ease with use. It appears to be a well-made product. 58551

Comments

After a year, it still does the job but it never did stretch out as I had hoped and would sometimes pull out of the receptacles. I solved this by wrapping a hook

This plug works great once it is wired in. The only problem I have with it is that it does not receive the wire in a way that makes it easy to assemble, and I'm talking about the housing at the rear of the plug. The connection points are very easy to make up. Once you finally get it all together. It is very durable and weather proof. 60183

etrailer gave excellent service. Shipping was prompt. Email followup was excellent. I needed a part to hook up to a Silverado 3500 with the wires to the bed already there (taped up at the front of the bed on the driver side) and didn't want to tap into the existing plug on the bumper. The L Shaped bracket is easily detachable so that the plug can be screwed directly into the sheet metal of the truck bed once a hole is cut. However 2 things....the unit comes with nuts and bolts so get ready for a trip to Home Depot to get some sheet metal screws of some sort for most installs in the bed. Second, the holes that the screws must go in are hex shaped which is great for the bolts that come with the unit but not for sheet metal screws so be sure and get screws with a small enough head to countersink into the holes or with a big enough base so as not to sink into the hex shaped holes. 103078

Before I start I want you all to know I am not good at anything with wires or water, period. I had an old 4x8 trailer that needed to be re-wired. I was not looking forward to screwing it up which was inevitable If I touched it. But, I need the trailer for the July 4th weekend so by chance I ran across your site. I found the video on how-to rewire a trailer. Though you made it look easy *I* would be attempting this! Okay, the project took a bit of time since I questioned everything twice (about an hour) but I have to say, IT WAS NO PROBLEM re-wiring the trailer. The 4-way trailer harness is much better than the harness I had on it and the whole project was actually fun to do (and I hate this type of stuff). I love the quality and really love the connector 'cap', even though the trailer is garage kept. Thanks for the products and the video assistance, it was easy because of you! 84151

Comes with documentation about wiring and a grease packet to put on the contacts to prevent corrosion. Wires are black with a colored stripe for identification per the documentation in the package. 94229

Good sealed connector. Having the functions marked on each wire is great...no worry about color coding differences between different vintagesmodels of trailers or vehicles.

I received the product quickly and in perfect condition the packing was excellant. I installed the connector easily and quickly. I consulted the Gm wiring diagram and als found the wires for all the 7 connections. I had a tight spot within the bumper edge, but managed to find short bolts to attach the bracket in old exsisting holes. The rest was easy attaching the connectors and making sure all wires were through the rear enclosure and tightening them down. I tested the 4 wire connector with my boat trailer lights and it worked like it was designed to do. I LOVE the versatility of this connector. Thanks etrailer.com!! Great product at a great price. 14869

Installed the Hopkins muti-tow 7, 5, and 4 way flat connector this morning. I ripped the original connector that was attached to the bottom of the hitch receiver off when I was 4-wheeling into the Doll House campgrounds in the Maze District of Canyonlands a month ago. So, I cut a hole in the bumper and mounted the new Hopkins connector, cut off the old broken connector mounting bracket, and connected the factory wiring to the new Hopkins device. Hopkins product installed easily, looks great, is now out of the way, and has the flexibility of multiple trailer connectors when required. I am pleased with the product. Attached is a photo. 133981

I am enclosing 2 photos of trailer connector I purchased from etrailer. I have a 1995 Dutchman popup trailer. It had a 6 way round connector which would not fit my 2010 F150. By using your trailer connector diagrams, I was able to determine Dutchman was using white for the ground, blue for brakes, black for battery, brown for right turn/brake, red for left turn/brake, and green for tail lights. I replaced the 6 way with your 7 way connector. 99746

I needed to rewire the " speghetti " wiring mess that trailer companies installed on my truck. What a mess but Doing business with etrailer was a wonderful experience. I ordered a a 5th wheel trailer wire kit to plug into OEM connector and a bumber 7 pin connector kit for my F250. All was Plug and Play. Took less than and hour and all lights, brakes, aux. everything worked perfect and first time. I now have a very clean, professional wiring. Looks better than factory installed. Also all the LED lights I ordered for the boat trailer fit perfect and looks great. Very satisfied customer. Trailer Wheel and Frame is 10 miles away but I will be getting my trailer parts from etrailer from now on. Great Service and follow through on the order. I was notified and in the loop every step on the order and delivery process. Thanks again 83371

I had broken my factor connector on my 06 Tacoma, frankly due to a poor design placement by Toyota in my opinion, however I was not going to pay a premium $200+ price for a new OEM part and I wasn't planning to place it back in the original spot to only get broken again. This is a great replacement plus I no longer need a wire adapter. The unit fit perfectly in pre-cut hole that held my left tag light. Only had to drill 4 small holes for the bolts to secure to the bumper. Only pain was cutting the old wire and attaching it to the new connector, but that only took 10 minutes top. 116271

Installed: 9/12/2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Installation of the plug was a quick and easy. The existing Warrior hitch has a tab on the side for a trailer wiring socket. Drill a new hole on the installation bracket (comes with the trailer connector) so the bracket on the hitch matches bracket on the trailer connector. Done deal. This is the only trailer connector I found which has the 7, 5 and 4 connector options. Flexibility is always a good idea when you are borrowing someone else trailer or renting. 99853

Overall, I was very impressed by this connector. I used it as an in-bed connector for my gooseneck trailers. The plug seems to be a quality product, engineered to stand up to some abuse. I like how the mounting bolt heads recess into the connector and also how the bottom of the connector is elongated to help support the weight of the plug and wiring. I think it has a great shot at lasting for a very long time. The hinge is predominately plastic that will not corrode and break like the many I've had in the past. 100800

Don't buy this product if you wiring cord covering the seven wires going to your traileris heavy duty. You will have a VERY difficult time terminating the wires in the plug and then getting everything back together. The plastic handle on the back of the plug and the metal frame that it mounts to leave almost no room for the wiring. 42902

I think Bob H. is referring to the size of the wire bundle he has on his trailer that he needed to fit into the connector. If you have a full 7-wire bundle, particularly that uses heavier gauge wires, it could be problematic fitting it into the connector. I've emailed Bob H. to let him know about your question and he can come back and add anything he might have.

Although I have just installed this I believe it to be very good quality and it should last a long time based on my inspection of it. Be sure to order a mounting bracket if you don't already have one as this unit doesn't come with a bracket. Hopkins bracket part # is 48615. I like the fact that the harness plugs into the connector instead of having to strip and connect every wire into the connector individually. That should help inhibit corrosion which is the #1 cause of trailer electrical issues and it makes things much easier if I have to replace the connector later. 168220

Finally got the right part, my bad the first time, and the Hopkins wiring harness was in my 2006 Dodge Ram truck in less than 30 minutes. Most of your time will be spent drilling the hole in the side of the bed. I used a 2" hole saw vice the 2 & 1/8th (already had the 2" and didn't want to run out and buy another hole saw) and had no problems getting the harness through the hole. Hooked up the trailer and everything worked perfectly. There's plenty of harness, maybe too much, for any application in the truck bed. Great product! 81086

This is an excellent alternative to purchasing the 4 way connector alone. All leads are built into the connector, which means you don't have deal with that part of the installation process. The ground wire has a good length to it, with the screw end circle easily fastened to the trailer. The length of the other wiring allows for you to completely rewire a small trailer like the one that I've replaced. I recommend this product if you're looking for a hassle free replacement or upgrade of your existing trailer wiring system. 120085

My dog ate the head off of my old harness and it was cheaper to replace the entire harness than to splice and curse and add assorted parts. This harness is COMPLETE, and will really do the trick. Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

While this seems like a quality product, it will NOT fit the typical 6- or 7-conductor pigtail cable found on most larger trailers and RVs. I tried modifying it by cutting away some of the internal plastic ribs, but I still can't get the backshell to clamp down properly. It may work fine for trailers that use a smaller cable. I do like the storage clip, so I'll be using that since I can't return mine anyway. I'll be ordering a complete replacement cable with molded connector to repair my trailer. 168712

I am the purchasing manager for a company that fabricates and installs custom truck equipment. Usually our customers don't want the 7 way RV style plug. When they do want this plug, we always install the Hopkins model. It is a great unit, and also gives the customer 4 way and 5 way flat options as well. This is the one I use on my personal truck. Great product, and E trailer always ships fast and has everything in stock. Much better than our local trailer supply company. 179954

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

Part arrived quickly and was exactly as pictured. Installation on my 2008 Dodge Durango was a little tricky, as there is no easy place to install it. Luckily my buddy was able to drill holes in bumper next to the hitch and then tap them so we could attach the connector with screws. There is not much room for the connector to fit, but by bending the metal mounting plate slightly it worked perfectly. The chart included with the product made it easy to wire correctly. 150280

Review from a similar Hopkins Endurance in Wiring

Great product - the overall depth is a bit deep and for my specific application I had some challenges finding a good mounting point (partially due to the depth of the adapter and partly due to the lack of solid mounting surface. The product itself is sold with a flexible five/four way plug (single plug accommodates both the four and five pin) that will not easily break. The seven pin plug has a fairly stiff cover that is spring loaded. Wiring was simple too! 30756

  • Running Lights Work But Brake Lights and Turn Signals Do Not Work on Coleman Camper
  • The best way to start troubleshooting your truck and trailer is to disconnect the two and test each one separately. If you have access to a different tow vehicle or trailer you can test using one of these to isolate the problem to either your truck or camper. Inspect both the vehicle and trailer connectors for signs of dirt, discoloration or corrosion. Even very slight greenish or whitish discoloration on the connectors can interfere with signal transmission. You can try cleaning the...

  • How to Make a 6-Way Square to 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Adapter
  • The 6-Way square trailer connector is not used by a lot of trailer manufacturers. A lot of Jayco trailers may have them but mostly you come across the 4-Way flat, like what you have on your trailer, and the 7-Way blade for RV applications. What I recommend is to convert the 6-Pole on the Monaco to a 4-Way. You can do this very easily by removing the 6-Way plug, and then testing the wires for function using a circuit tester like # 3808 if needed before installing them in a new 4-Way,...

  • How to Connect the Ground Wire on a 4-Way Flat Wiring Harness
  • The Hopkins Endurance 4-way Flat Trailer End Connector, # HM48110, that you referenced is the harness that goes on a trailer, not a vehicle. The 4-way connector for your vehicle is the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Vehicle End Connector, # HM48030. You can connect the white ground wire from the wiring harness to a vehicle ground, but you should verify that the white wire on your vehicle is in fact a ground wire. In most cases the white wire from the wiring harness is attached to a clean,...

  • How Come this 6 Way Square Adapter # 30104 Will Not Work on My 1983 Coleman Pop Up
  • The reason you are not getting the lights to work is that this Adapter 4 Way Flat to 6 Way Square for Jayco, part # 30104, is because this adapter is wired to only work on Jayco trailers, and is not wired to work on your Coleman Pop up. Although we can not sell you an adapter that would work on your Coleman trailer because of propriety issues with Coleman, there is a way you could get your trailer lights to function properly. You will need to connect the # 30104 to your vehicle and...

  • 4-way Options for use With a Tow Ready Mounting Bracket
  • The Hopkins 4-way # HM48030 that you referenced is a great 4-way, but like you noticed, it is much larger than most 4-ways so it would not fit through the Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat # 18144 that you have. You basically have two choices at this point. You can either buy a different 4-way that will fit through the hole of the # 18144. Or you could cut off your # HM48030 and then run the wires through the front of the # 18144 and then reconnect the wires to the 4-way wiring of your vehicle. Check...

  • Troubleshooting Running Lights Circuit on Factory 4-Pole Wiring on 2011 Ford Ranger
  • The best way to evaluate the operation of the factory 4-pole wiring harness on your 2011 Ford Ranger is to use a circuit tester like # 40376 but there are also checks you can do without a tester. It is possible that you may have just a corrosion problem on your 4-pole and this is easy to check. Inspect the metal contact surfaces for any signs of even slight greenish or whitish discoloration. Pay particular attention to the pin for the brown (tail light) wire. Clean the contacts as necessary. Another...

  • Part Recommendations For Flat-Towing A 2006 Hummer H3
  • In order to be able to flat-tow your 2006 Hummer H3, there are 5 items needed. You will need base plates for the Hummer, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the H3, and most states now require a supplemental brake system. The base plates I recommend are the Roadmaster Base Plates, part # 2505-3. When the front arms are removed the system is virtually invisible. The tow bar I recommend is the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520. This tow bar has a weight capacity of 6,000...

  • Preventing Damage to 4-Way Connectors on Trailers Used by Many People
  • There are a few solutions I can think of. First I will list some parts that you may find useful then explain some of the ideas I had. We offer a weather proof junction box, part # 38656, that would allow people to make hardwire connections without cutting your 4-pole connector off. We do not carry any heavy coated wire, but we do carry wire loom that might make cutting a bit more difficult like part # 459075-1. The best solution for preventing cutting I could think of is using flexible...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2012 Kia Sorento
  • Your 2012 Kia Sorento has a separate wiring system. This means that the brake lights and turn signals are on different circuits/bulbs. Trailers on the other hand have a combined system with the turn signals and brake lights on the same circuit/bulb. So you would not be able to just wire in a vehicle side 4-Way directly to the lights on the Sorento because you would either have brake lights or turn signals but not both. You will need the proper harness that includes a converter for...

  • No Tail Lights On Boat Trailer When Parking or Headlights of 1995 Ford Truck Are On
  • It sounds like you have a common ground problem. When the headlights are on, the highest amperage draw is placed on the wiring system and if you have a bad or loose ground, you will have problems with lights. You will want to inspect to make sure all the light assemblies have a good ground connection to a clean, rust and paint-free metal surface. You will also want to make sure the trailer and vehicle side connector have a good ground connection. I would recommend unbolting the ground...

  • Adapting a 7-Pin European 7-Way on 1999 Range Rover to US 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector
  • You would have the same problem using adapter # 118710 as you would with just splicing in a 4-Way. The adapter doesn't convert the separate signals to combined signals used by most trailers in the US. You would need to add a converter, # RM-732, which will take the separate signals and combine them. You could then wire in a 4-Way flat such as # HM48030 on the output side of the converter.

I have a better solution for you, what you will want to do is remove the 6-way end of the tow bar wiring that comes with the Sterling, and then run the wires to a 4-way like the part # HM48030. Since your RV is already wired for a trailer connector, you will not need to use the Roadmaster Brite-Lite Wiring Converter, # RM-732.
