Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just set the initial power level, select a boost setting, and you're good to go.


As long as the P2 controller sits level on a horizontal plane and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.


Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

Aside from smoother, more efficient braking, Tekonsha's P2 brake controller also offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for those times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 14 percent or 28 percent of the predetermined power setting.


So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 28 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.


If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 28-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.


Safety Features

The Prodigy P2 offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts. When the P2 is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode. In this setting, the power draw falls to only 3.6 milliamps, minimizing drain on your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's battery.


When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the P2's "hold" feature will activate. When this happens, the power output to your trailer's brakes will be reduced to just 25 percent of the preset power setting so that the brakes will not overheat.


If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this lever engages the brakes on your trailer with full power. In addition, when you activate this override, the brake lights on your trailer will illuminate, properly warning those behind you of the braking action of your rig.


In addition to all of those safety features listed above, the P2 offers diagnostics such as:

  • Open ground
  • Overload
  • Output short
  • Power loss
  • No trailer connection

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the P2 ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at any vertical angle, and the controller will level itself automatically thanks to its 360-degree rotational range.

Note: The P2 must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.


Installation is a snap. After mounting the P2 unit in your cab using the included pocket mount, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The other end plugs into the brake controller. To transfer the P2 to another vehicle or to remove it for storage, just unplug the unit and slide it out of the pocket mount.


Installation Accessories

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.


Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Today were going to review part #90885. This is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Break Controller. This is a proportional brake controller, which will activate your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicles braking action. It will automatically adjust the trailers braking based on the deceleration of the tow vehicle, and it will activate immediately so theres no pausing like with your time-delay brake controllers. This controller does have an automatic leveling ability. Theres an internal sensor on the inside which will detect deceleration, even if the controllers not mounted flat.

You can position it at any angle, up or down in a vertical plane, 360 degrees, but you will want to be able to place it to where you can read this LED display right here. Now as far as horizontal position, you do want to stay horizontal and parallel to the direction of travel, so this way. In other words, not like this. Youll want it parallel that way. And not like that.

So as much as you can, and vertically you can go whichever way you want. Now there are three boost levels. Right here is the boost button. When you push that, it will put you into a boost 1, boost 2, or boost 3, and thatll let you adjust the initial braking power and aggressiveness, so if youre using a heavier trailer with a heavier load, youll want to increase the boost level. This controller also has a continuous diagnostic check, which will alert you to any potential problems.

It does have integrated safeguards, which will protect your vehicle, the trailer, and the brake controller. It does minimize drain on the car battery by drawing only 3.6mA when not in use. Itll prevent the trailer brakes from overheating by reducing power output to them during prolonged stops when your foots on the brake, and itll help defend the brake controller and the trailer breakaway system against any shorts. Right here will be the digital blue LED display, which is easy to read. Now in a minute here, Im going to hook the power up to it and well be able to see that.

On the very bottom here, which you can reach from the front, is a manual built-in rotary-style manual override for emergency braking purpose. Now on the very back, you can see the plug-in. It is a quick disconnect feature, which will let you easily remove and store the brake controller when not in use. It does come with this wiring harness that plugs into the brake controller and the pigtails to wire up to your vehicle. It does come with this type of mounting bracket, which will install with the mounting hardware to the side holes, or the popular pocket style, which you would mount this to your vehicle and then just slide this in, and on each side would be a pin that would slide into those mounting holes. To release it, you would just pull out those. It slides right out. There are also butt connectors to help you connect it to the wiring in your vehicle. We do also recommend that if you are going to move this from vehicle to vehicle, to buy an extra wiring harness and an extra bracket, if you dont use one of these. That way you have one in each vehicle and it makes it easier to remove the controller from one vehicle to another. We also do sell wiring harness that are vehicle-specific, meaning theyll have the plug like this n one end to plug into the brake controller. On the other end, instead of just these bare wires, theyll have a plug that will fit the factory brake controller port on your vehicle. What youll want to do is check the fit guide, if you do have the factory brake controller port, on our website and it will give you the part number of that vehicle-specific brake controller harness. This is designed for trailers with up to four axles or eight brake assemblies. It is designed for use with electric or electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes. It does come with a limited lifetime warranty. Now what Im going to do is, Ive got a power source here Im going to connect the wires up to, so we can get an idea of that blue LED display and just some of the features. Ill show you how they operate on the controller. Ive got them all hooked up to the power source. Now Im going to snap this in. Im going to turn the power on. Now what youll see, is when the power comes on, youll see a C. Youll see a dot and a C. That means the trailer is connected. Now if the trailer wasnt connected, let me just disconnect this and Ill show you what it looks like, youll see itll flash N-C and that means not connected. Whatll happen is thatll flash for about fifteen seconds, then it will change to just the two dots, and that means you trailer is not connected. Ill show you here in a second. There you go. Now youre just seeing the one dot. Therell be two dots if the boost feature was engaged. If it isnt, theres just one dot. What were going to do is connect the trailer back up. There we go. Now youll see it is connected. Now this boost feature button right here, now youll see when I push it once, itll say b for boost. Now right now it isnt in any boost level, as youll see by just the dot and the C. Now when I hit boost and I go to boost 1, and then theres a boost 2 and a boost 3. When Im in a boost level, watch when that goes off, you should see a dot, a C, and a dot. Therell be two dots. That means the boost feature is engaged. Now to set the power, heres the power over here. If you push this manual override all the way on as far as you can go, and you turn that knob, and thatll set the boost or the power that you want. So lets say we set it at, lets say 6.3. Now I let off the manual override. So basically when you go to hit this manual override, as you push it, its going to ramp up and itll go all the way to 6.3. Thats the power you set it for. So you just set your power control, the dial there, by pushing all the way in and set the power. Theres a feature, if this is connected and its just sitting with no motion or activity for 15 minutes, it will go blank. It still has power connected, but itll go blank just to save on the power going to it. That should do it for the review on part #90885, the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Break Controller.

I installed this model 90885 Prodigy P2 Brake Controller using the ETBC7 Brake Controller Wiring Kit on my 2007 Dodge Nitro. On a scale of 1 to 10, I consider myself about an 8 where it comes to automotive mechanical and electrical work. I also strive to get as close to perfection as possible. To do the job right, it did take some time and it did require paying close attention to the directions for both the wiring kit and the controller. However, the directions were "right on", and all the needed "goodies" to do the job were furnished. My hat is off to ETRAILER for the informative videos they provide and their customer service, which includes very quick shipments of their products. 122727

I didn’t have a good location that was reachable while driving so I mounted the controller on top of the dash. I leveled the bracket with a spacer and ran the harness by an access panel. I used about 70’ of the duplex wire due to running the cable to front and then back to the house batteries inside the coach. The access panel made it easy to make the connections and run the wires through the firewall. I mounted the 40 AMP and 30 AMP circuit breakers up front in the main fuse panel box. I drilled a hole through the box and firewall to run the wires from the brake controller to the breaker and to the blue wire for the tow connection at the back of the coach. I ran the battery connections to my house batteries up front instead of using the engine batteries in the back. I found the brake connection wire under the coach in front directly below the brake pedal. I mounted the converter in a beam in the back with lots of zip ties 9444

For ford ranger 2010 and perhaps other years:Be aware that the video contains the wrong instruction for the 2010 ranger. In wiring the brake light wire, the switch shown being tapped into gives reverse braking sensing, that is, it is 12 when the brake is not applied, but 0v when it is. I found elsewhere that the correct wire is the 2nd connection on the 5 pin plug that rides on the brake itself.This is no comment on the original video, which was excellent, and referred to the 2011 ranger model.

Wire colors can and do change often. We offer the colors that we find in our videos as a starting point, but even if you have a 2011, it is best to double check and make sure to positively identify the wire color first.

I installed the brake controller a week or two ago in my 2013 GMC Sierra 1500. I had one just like it in an older Duramax that the previous owner installed--I went with the same product. I had the chance to use it this afternoon to pull a few tons of #57 stone. Trailer plus load I figure about 6000 pounds behind the truck. Pictures are attached. This is the first 1/2 ton truck I've owned in nearly 10 years and worries how it would do with heavier loads. This controller made a world of difference and really maximized the use of my truck. Great product and I highly recommend it to anyone needing a good controller. 137307

So I purchased a Tekonsha p2 brake control recently after hearing good reviews from friends. After a few weeks of having it installed I have a few gripes: 1. Display - The LED display is super bright and there is no way to turn down the brightness. It is really distracting to have a flashing bright blue light shining up at you at while driving at night. If you are the kind of person who is bothered by a GPS/Phone screens while driving at night then this this will bother you. 2. Wiring - Tekonsha's wiring instructions tell you to wire the brake controller directly to the battery. If you do this the brake controller runs 24/7/365 even when the vehicle is shut off. Do you really want a constant drain on your battery? Instead I chose to use a relay to turn the brake controller on and off with the ignition. There is an automatic shut-off built in to the controller. After a period of time, it will shut down on its own. It will not drain the vehicle battery if wired according to the instructions.Also, try the bracket instead of the holster. With the bracket, you can rotate the controller so the display is not directly aimed at the driver when not used.

Ive owned this for about a year now and have gotten the kinks out of my campers breaks. They seam to work real well with it. I seem to be able to break without the nerve-racking stress I had with the old truck. Proportionality control also is handy going down long hills or in heavy traffic. most of the time I have it in Normal mode dialed to the instructions in the manual. I installed this in a 2006 WK Jeep in about two hours. I used the generic pigtail because I didn't have/couldn't find a vehicle specific connector. There are more specific instructions for wiring it online, be a little creative with your search. I was able to find the same sheet as the generic one packaged with the controller, just specific to a 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The install took me about two hours, working by myself, and was relatively straightforward. Much of the time was taken up by making the install of wire runs neat and preserving the "factory look," if you are not particular about appearance, the install could go much more quickly. This was my first time installing a brake controller. I haven't had a chance to hook it up to a trailer yet, but it seems to be functioning properly. I am a little concerned that the ground wire on the supplied pigtail is a small gauge, 14, so if I encounter any issues I will switch this out with a larger gauge wire. I also noted that the factory wiring harness supplied by the Jeep dealer for the hitch has a 14 gauge brake wire. While this should be sufficient for up to two axles, if I notice any issues, I will replace this wire also with a heavier gauge. The generic pigtail contained a 12 gauge wire for the brake line. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller is a great product. This is my second one to own. Shipping was prompt and installation was easy. One thing I really like about etrailer.com is the installation videos. It helps me decide if I can do it myself or not. However I did find one small error video demonstrating the installation of the Prodigy brake controller in the 2012 Silverado pickup. When hooking up the power to the controller under the hood the video states that you need a 10mm 1.25 pitch nut to go on the stud. It is easy to find. I found one at Home Depot. The only problem is it actually takes an 8mm 1.25 pitch nut. This caused only a slight delay in the installation and another trip to get the correct nut. 2013 Chrysler Town and country White wire with green stripe worked for cold side of brake switch. When you cut a hole in the boot, to pass the wire from the engine compartment through the fire wall, make it at the 2 oclock position when looking from the front of the engine. this makes it easier to pass the wires. Check the free led circuit tester prior to use. Some don't work. Use a piece of aluminum angle stock to mount the circuit breakers. Mount the aluminum to a 10MM fender bolt next to the fuse box. This way you don't need to drill holes. Was a good kit with good components. 83238

The Prodigy P2 is as easy to install in my 2011 Chevy Silverado as any brake controller I have used. This is a direct wire install with now extra wiring harness used. I ordered this unit along with the vehicle specific interface adapter, 4 pole to 7 pole trailer connector. I had my own 10ga wire and split loom to run from the back of the truck to the front. Took some time but got the job done. I suggest that you go ahead and spring for the 10-2-1 duplex wire that etrailer has available so you don't don't have to take the time to feed the two single conductors thru the loom (I strongly suggest using the loom if you do this yourself). Once connected and powered up it took all of 5 minutes to setup. I ordered the Tekonsha P2 along with all the necessary equipment to "turn key" the project along with an oil cooler on a Friday night. Saturday morning I was notified that the order was already packaged and ready to ship along with my 5 business day shipping being upgraded to 3 business day shipping. This is my first brake controller so that fact may disqualify me as a reviewer; but then maybe it makes me a better one! I usually do a lot of research before buying something I need that I know little or nothing about, but that was a quick task in this case. EVERY forum, expert review, and installer recommendation had the same two pieces of advice: Buy proportional versus time delay, and buy Tekonsha. Beyond that, it was either buy the Prodigy P2 if you don't need an LCD display or the P3 if you do. I didn't need the LCD display because I'll only be hauling one trailer with the same drag car on it, so now that I have the controller installed and adjusted I don't expect to have to mess with it any more. Installation was easy peasy with the adapter cable for my '10 Tacoma, mounted under the lower dash just beneath the steering column. This was exactly what I needed for my 2005 Tacoma for towing. I pulled a 29' camper trailer 300 mi. with it shortly after installing. With the proper hitch setup and this brake controller, it turned what could have been a white knuckle nightmare into a pleasureable trip. I purchased this with the proper wiring plug-in adapter which made it extremely easy to install in less than 20 min. The only thing I don't like about it is how intensely bright the blue LED lights are at night when I'm not towing anything. Of course its fairly easy to unplug and remove when not in use though, but that does get old. I wish it just had an on/off switch or something. I was initially concerned that the lights would put a drain on my battery as they do stay illuminated after turning off the truck, but I found it's only for a few minutes then they turn off. This was a replacement for a similar product from a manufacturer etrailer no longer carries. The previous product randomly turned on the brake lights on my 2010 Tundra while it was parked at night; they might stay on for some minutes then turn off. Tapping the controller unit turned them off at first, but then nothing worked except unplugging the unit. Then it totally crapped out. Contrast that with the Tekonsha P2 unit. No defective operation, easy installation, great display with clear diagnostic significance. I mounted the unit with Velcro strips( buy them at the fabric shop) super glued to the unit and the vinyl of the Tundra, on the left side by the left knee. Very simple to install. It came with a 4 wire harness with a receptacle on one end to plug into the back of the unit. The ends of the wires were stripped and ready to attach to the wires already under my dash. It included 4 crimps to connect the wires. My truck had 4 wires and so did the unit. Directions were easy to figure out what wire got hooked to what wire. Usually every time I buy something like this it will have 40 wires and I have to figure out which ones to use. This could not have been easier. In fact the hardest part of the whole thing was trying to decide where I wanted to mount it. The wires are ling enough to reach halfway across the dash. I rated it as high-good because I haven't installed it yet, but I have convidence it will work well and should rate an "excellent". The product and installation parts/instructions look to be first class. It will be installed on a Dodge Dakota used to tow a Casita RV trailer. I bought this on advice of several other RV owners that all agreed that it is the best you can get. It will be replacing a time delay type controller that frankly I just cannot stand. The fact that it has an inertia sensor that is not a pendulum is the #1 reason I chose the Prodigy over others. According to the instructions, it does not have to be mounted level and internally self adjusts for tilt while going up and down hills. I found a slightly cheaper price but the site didn't have the great installation videos so I figured if Etrailer went to all the work to share the videos then they are the kind of company that cares about how well the products work and will have great customer support too. I didn't have the non contact tester like in the video and to work under a dash you have to stand on you head so I googled “car alarm install diagram” and found my car and checked on the list for “brake” and it showed which wire by color code was the right one to tap into. Two Phillips head screws to remove lower dash panel, Infiniti had the wires labeled with a huge sticker that said "ELECTRIC BRAKE CONTROLLER" I cut the tape to bring down the wires and this thing plugged in perfectly!!! I installed this Tekonsha brake controller on my 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 in about an hour. The actual install of the controller to the underside of the dash took only about 15 minutes but mating the included harness with the one that came with my truck added a little more time. Matching the cables was pretty easy as the controller came with excellent instructions (but If I had to do it over, I would probably buy the optional vehicle-specific harness just to save a little time and to insure a good connection.) Do your homework first. I found this website by chance, and boy am I glad I did. I was originally quoted $250 for the trailer brake and got it for half with etrailer. It strongly recommends that you buy the installation kit. You need to look to see if your vehicle already has a harness, which mine did. You can buy a wiring adapter for about a third of the price as the installation kit. Again, doing some research will save time and money. As for installation, saying that it took five minutes is almost exagerating. I just attached the mounting bracket to the truck, attached the controller, and plugged in the harness. Tiny profile, 2 mounting options allow choosing type of mount given locations available. Ability to mount in a non-horizontal orientation also greatly helps this. For my open top Wrangler I like the 'holster' mount so that I can easily and quickly remove it to lock it away when I'm not around. All wiring was straight forward except for the attach to the brakeline, but given this varies by vehicle and year that's not the products fault. Some internet searching for my vehicle make and model wiring schematics allowed me to figure that out without too much issue. A electrical 'tester' also helps with this. The order was shipped on Saturday the 5th and I received it on Wednesday the 9th, one day ahead of the scheduled delivery. I installed it on Saturday morning and it was quite easy. It took about 15 minutes in all. I replaced a Reese time delay controller which was very jumpy at times. I tested the new controller on Monday and it works very well. This thing is really neat. It took me about 7 hours to get the whole thing done. I know, I'm slow. I had a loose connection in one of the wiring clamps, replaced them with twist clamps. Then I had to calibrate the power by driving 45 mph with some manual brake on to warm the brakes. Then 25 mpg repeatedly applying full manual brake to try and lock up the trailer tires. This was kind of fun and it's all working great now. This is a lot of new information to work with all at once with the wiring, drilling, calibrating, etc. If I had know, might have paid the $100 to have someone do it. 45374

I bought this controller to replace my old one, which was a Prodigy also. It was the best controller I've ever owned or used. It had been on my F-250 Power Stroke for many years (10 or more). My odometer is showing 226,000 + miles and a large portion of those have included a trailer of some type. I pull a lot of different trailers and pull very often. There has been times when someone would be riding with me and they would comment that they didn't think my brakes were working because they were so smooth. When I have 10K-12K pounds on a trailer I don't want to trust any other controller!! 66016

Great product, great website, good price and quick delivery. But the thing that made the purchase really worthwhile was the ability to find a video of how to install this specific product on my particular truck. The 2011 GMC Sierra comes with a bundle of wires tucked under the driver's side of the dashboard. The video from etrailer easily found on You Tube shows exactly which wires from the truck to connect to the wires on the brake controller. This job would be impossible for the average guy to do without the video. I would definitely do business with etrailer again. 13217

Never had a brake controller before, so I can't compare this to anything else, but it worked flawlessly for me. Easy DIY instal (once I was able to get the electrical wires through the firewall). This unit can be installed tilted upwards more than most of the other controllers (stills needs to be parallel to ground), which made for a nicer, easier instal in our Sienna. That is a HUGE plus in my opinion. Easy to set and use. Display is nothing fancy, but gives important info and is easy to read. No problems with the brake controller, and thanks to the video on etrailer showing where to locate the leads under the hood I was able to do it myself. The lead under the fuse box was not taped near the fender, but stuck under the box!!! After watching the video I knew not to remove the box which would have been my first course of action. After a lot of pulling (gently) and tugging I was able to free up the wire. The video may have saved a very expensive repair to my Avalanche. Plus shipping was faster than expected. Shipping was very fast and packed very nice. Installing was a breeze, I reviewed the instructional video before I even purchased this controller. Once the controller arrived I unpacked all items reviewed the wire diagram and mounting instuctions. Located wiring harness and hooked the wires together with the supplied wire connectors (crimp connectors- May want to state wire crimpers needed). Applied power and the unit worked. I own a ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Need an electric brake controller for my 2000 Chevy Z71 used to tow my cattle trailer. Dealer wanted $180 to install a "cheapie." I received my Prodigy in about 4 days. Fast easy. Thanks etrailer for tons of good information. I put my vehicle in the search engine and got the pre made adapter cord which fit, and snapped in easily, I picked up a new trailer, and had the brakes adjusted within 1/2 a mile down the road. I had figured there would be lots of tweaking and adjustments to make.. but I was wrong. It looks pretty much like set it and forget it.
