Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just set the initial power level, select a boost setting, and you're good to go.

As long as the Primus IQ controller is properly mounted and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

Aside from smoother, more efficient braking, Tekonsha's Primus IQ brake controller also offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for those times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the predetermined power setting.

So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your Ford Aerostar. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

Approximate Gross Trailer WeightBoost LevelIncrease in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVWB113%
Equal to tow vehicle GVWB1 or B213% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVWB2 or B3*25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVWB3*25%

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Safety Features

The Primus IQ offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. For example, when it is not in use, this brake controller will be in power-saving mode. In this setting, the power draw falls to minimize drain on your Ford Aerostar's battery.

When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the Primus IQ's "hold" feature will activate. When this happens, the power output to your trailer's brakes will be reduced to just 25 percent of the preset power setting so that the brakes will not overheat.

If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override is easily accessible. Pushing this slide bar engages the brakes on your trailer with full power. In addition, when you activate this override, the brake lights on your trailer will illuminate, properly warning those behind you of the braking action of your rig.

In addition to all of those safety features listed above, the Primus IQ offers diagnostics such as:

  • Open ground
  • Overload
  • Output short
  • Faulty mounting
  • Power loss
  • No trailer connection

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the Primus IQ ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at a vertical angle that is between 0 degrees (level) and 70 degrees, and the controller will level itself automatically.

Correct Primus mounting70-Degree Primus mounting

Note: The Primus IQ must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

Installation is a snap. After mounting the Primus IQ unit in your cab using the included bracket, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your Ford Aerostar. The other end plugs into the brake controller. To transfer the Primus IQ to another vehicle or to remove it for storage, just unplug the unit and snap it out of the bracket.

Installation Accessories

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your Ford Aerostar, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your Ford Aerostar, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your Ford Aerostar.

Shipping was great. Stared at it for a couple of days before unpacking. The trailer connector mounting was easy with the holes almost matching the existing holes on my 2013 Toyota Highlander. The first four wires are a snap, they are just plugged into the existing four pin connector. I routed the two wire cable towards the front using ty wraps and improvised L brackets fixed to existing chassis screws. I mounted the Circuit Breakers on the inside of the left fender making sure there was hood clearance (see photo). Then I hit a snag. There was no easy way to get the brake and 12V power wire to the brake controller inside the car. For grins, I goggled "brake controller video" for my car and came up with a video made by "eTrailer." (Thank you eTrailer) Three things from the video helped me: wire access from inside the car through the firewall, a place to mount the controller and how to locate the brake wire. After the installation I had 18" of two wire cable left over. The install took me about six hours. (I'm 71 and I took my time.) A couple days later I connected the trailer for a test ride. The brake controller worked like a dream. Things I liked: Retaining the four wire trailer plug setup next to the seven wire trailer plug. Controller display works but you don't have to look at it. The two wire cable was adequate for the job. Being an Engineer (retired) I worry about things like that. Thing I didn't like: The mounting plate for the trailer plug is a little weak. A stiffer plate would have been better suited for me. and, oh yeh, somebody else to install it. ;=) 135250

Installed quickly an easily into my 2009 GMC Sierra 2500HD by wiring up to the factory harness. Be sure to watch the etrailer.com video to see which wires need connected at the fuse box in the engine compartment! (Easy hook-ups, just need to make sure you see which ones get hooked up and where.) And if you don't use your ash tray, these brake controllers squeeze nicely into the ash tray compartment/recess in the lower part of the dash. Makes a great place to keep most of the controller out of the way and it's easy to install (you will have to create 2x new holes in the plastic detachable controller mounting bracket but its very easy - you can see the mounting screws in the 'new' holes and the old holes go unused as shown in the photo). Only had a trailer hooked up once, but the controller functioned as designed. I think the 'Boost' function will come in handy if I use a well-loaded trailer and need some additional stopping power from the trailer. 135875

I installed this on my 1997 Chevy K1500 pickup to pull my farm trailer, Kubota tractor, and it's implements (total of about 5500#s). I bought my truck new in 1997 with the towing package. eTrailer had a number of links related to the installation, but the most helpful was the one that identified the blue brake and orange power wires that, in my case, were preinstalled at the factory. That made the job significantly easier. What I thought would be the most challenging part of the install turned out to be simple, but only because of pure, dumb luck. Because I had installed aftermarket security and stereo systems shortly after I bought the truck, there was no way to identify/compare the pictures/discussions to identify the hot brake wire under the dash near the brake (other than that it was likely a white or gray wire). The circuit tester (purchased with my order from eTrailer) turned out to be a godsend. Unbelievably, the first white wire I tested turned out to be the hot brake wire! I was very lucky to hit the correct wire on the first try. The first time I hooked up to my trailer, the system worked flawlessly... exactly as the instructions described. And the performance is excellent. Note: I double/triple checked connections as I worked. I highly recommend doing this. Hunting down electrical connection malfunctions is not something you want to do. Overall, I'm VERY happy with my purchase and the support from eTrailer. I highly recommend this product and eTrailer. 98210

THANKS for the Brake Controller unit from ETrailer. It arrived w/in 5 days from your MO location to my So CAL residence. Even as an Engineer/Scientist from the Delta IV rocket program and no experience with brake controllers, I was able to install this unit by myself. Your continued (live human) support and online video clips proved to be the key elements to this installation...without my symbolic pocket protector. I have attached a few images of the unit, mounted to the fuse-panel cover (3/16 attachments with locking hex nuts) in a 2006 Toyota 4Runner SR5 (with factory tow package). The placement of the unit onto the panel cover allows a new panel cover (no holes drilled) to be used when it is time to sell the vehicle. 85308

Pictures of the install. Approximately a 20 min job. First picture my finger is pointing to the factory plug with the etrailer supplied harness plugged in. Note the harness did not specify that the white common with the ring terminal should be connected to ground. But then again that SHOULD be obvious. I will be towing this weekend so I will rate the product then. One minor gripe is that there is always power to the unit which is a battery drain (as evidenced with the key out of the ignition and the unit stayed on) Not sure as to the impact but the controller can always be unplugged or removed. Sorry for the dirty floor mats in the photos. 115201

Comments

Just a quick note, there is an automatic shut-off on the Primus IQ. After 15 minutes or so of in activity, the controller will power down automatically. As soon as the controller detects movement, it comes back on. No battery drain, and you do not have to remember to turn the controller off or on.

The Tekonsha Primus IQ controller is a well made compact unit that is perfect for my FJ. The ETBT7 wiring kit has all you need to go from 4 to 7 pin connectors. I was worried about how to remount the 4 pin, but the new 7 pin has a 4 built in it. It is a very clean install. The kit had everything needed to install, including a test light. The Tekonshcontroller and the wiring kit are high quality and have complete easy instructions, and had everything needed for the install. Etrailer didn't have the ETBT7 in stock when I ordered and I paid for expedited shipping. They followed up with emails and calls to inform me what was happening, and offered to refund the shipping fee. I told them just expedite it when it came in and they did, got to me in two days. I recommend trailer highly, they kept me informed, were prompt, friendly, and concerned, and paid attention to detail. If only other companies followed their example... Excellent prices, Great product line, great company, great staff. I will use them for all my trailer needs. I Recommend them highly. 130304

I chose this device based on my trailer repairman's brand recommendation. He usually has them in stock but was out. I got mine before his order came in. He also did not have a wiring harness for my vehicle so I ordered that, too. This is the first time I've ordered anything significant that I knew virtually nothing about. From the descriptions and pictures on the etrailer site it was easy to look up what I needed. I also read on the site about time control vs proportional and then knew the proportional would be good for me. I have a new camping trailer that has electric brakes; need the controller to operate the trailer brakes. The product quality of the brake controller appears very good. The wiring kit is quite substantial. My mechanic will wire up for me this week end and I'll have his opinion then. I am very satisfied with the speed of the delivery and the quality of the products. thank you 84360

Like other reviewers the biggest challenge was getting the cover plate removed (and replaced) to access the factory connection. The connection was at the very top of the wiring bundle and I was able to cut about 1/2" of the tape holding the bundle together very near the connection to gain access without removing or cutting all of the tape. The ground terminal was easily accessed and the installation was quick and mostly painless. The instructions to set the braking level was spot on. I have a Sequoia with a knee airbag and tire pressure monitoring. I place the controller with the open back of the bracket allowing access to reset the tire pressure monitoring switch. 103222

Purchased the Tekonsa Primus IQ controller with wiring adapter for my Dodge Ram. Shipment arrived quickly and was exactly what I needed. Installation was a piece of cake. Cut an opening in the plastic stock dash location. Plugged the adapter into the Dodge plug under the dash and into the Primus. Worked perfectly. No fuss. Installed in about 10 minutes which included the time to cut the opening.. Picture will be poster... I was so happy with the service from etrailers that I ordered the Blue Ox Swaypro hitch. I purchased a Primus IQ from our local NAPA dealer and had already installed it in one of our Dodge trucks before I learned about Etrailer. Needless to say it cost a bit more than the one I ordered from Etrailer a couple weeks later. you cant return electrical products once installed. I received the one from Etrailer in a very timely manner. I was hoping it wasn't a #2 for it being so much cheaper, but it is just fine and installation was no problem because I already had Tenkonsha Voygers so just chop the wire and install new control unit. We have two trucks and pull various trailers, so am real happy with product and will further order trailer items from ETRAILER.COM. Thank you, just Ray 107693

I bought this product after reading several reviews. I recently purchased a Fun Finder 189FBS Travel trailer, and I needed a Brake Controller that was proportionally controlled. After my first trip with my 2012 Rubicon/ Fun Finder; I am very pleased with my purchase. This controller works best for my setup, on the "b1" boost level. Setup and installation took less than 2 hours, and I did it myself. The instructions and reference video from etrailer.com were very helpful. I was quoted nearly $400 to install this controller from my local RV shop. I bought it hear, spent 2 hours, and saved $250. If you can crimp a wire, and run a drill- You can do this! 80929

This product plugged right in and worked perfectly as it should. I like the different boost levels as a quick adjustment between loaded and unloaded trailers. No messing with the gain controller to keep the tires from sliding. The special dodge plug made install a breeze and less than 5 minutes. Much better than splicing into wires. Plus eliminates the need to hunt for the correct wires. This controller works off of inertia so as it senses your truck braking it applies equal braking to the trailer eliminating the jerk experienced from other controllers. Shipping from etrailer was quick as well. Great overall product at a reasonable price. 124031

Product works great, as advertised. The Tech at the RV dealer commented on the reliability of this brake controller, and the install literally took 15 minutes, start to finish. The supplied factory wiring harness made quick, simple work of the installation. The video on the etrailer website is right on the money as well. I have dealt with etrailer for all my towing needs since 1995, and they have never let me down. Great, quality products......quick delivery, and customer service that is second to none. There is no reason to shop anywhere else. Thanks etrailer.......you are the best! 54172

I ordered mine with the wiring harness for toyo and Lexus. Everything plugged in nicely and fit perfectly in a Toyota Sequoia under the steering column on the right side. The only suggestions is the that the factory wiring harness in the sequoia has absolutely no slack, so it you order this with an adapter for this make and model, it is a little to short to run it to where I have it. I really had to work to get it mounted. If it had a longer run by about 6 inches it would have been a piece of cake. I still gave it an excellent rating because other than that it was a 5 minute install. 116521

While I have not had the chance to use it yet pulling my trailer I picked this particular unit because of the reviews it has received from people that have and are using it. I had it professionally installed and it is working as the instructions say it should. The company that installed it had nothing but good things to say about it as well. I especially want to thank Nicole for her help and customer service she provided to me and I can promise you that all my future trailer needs will be purchased from your company via Nicole. Great controler for the price. Easily mounted and set up using the vehicle specific harness. Installed in a 2003 Toyota Sequoia just under the key in the flat of the center cover. Perfect for the 0 - 70 deg mounting location required by this controler. Setup and operation just as was stated in user manuals. eTrailer was great as well, everything came together and on time. 84801

Im a novice with a 2003 Tundra. Vehicle specific harness options offered while ordering? What level of difficulty would you rate it, what required tools? Thanks

comment by: Corey J. - 06/26/2013

A plug-in brake controller harness can be used with your 2003 Tundra, if it came equipped with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector in the rear. You would use harness 3040-P for most Tekonsha controllers. I have sent you a link to a video that shows an install on a 2007 Tundra. It will give you a clear illustration of the install. All you need is a drill or screw gun, and your standard selection of screwdrivers. If you do not have a factory 7-Way, you will need to use kit ETBC7 to install the system and that is a bit more involved, but we also have videos of that kit so you can see how that is done.

I am unable to correctly rate this product at this time because there is no Dodge 2013 harness with which I can attach it. If/when the harness becomes available (a year plus after the truck came out, of course), I will re-review the product. Note that lack of this harness is NOT the fault of eTrailer, but if you're purchasing this for a 2013 Dodge truck, you might want to wait. 73972

Comments

Tekonsha is currently slated to have the harnesses, 3023-P, available by the end of April 2013. There have been running changes to the 2013 Dodge Ram that have made harness availability particularly challenging.

Plug and play is a true definition. My family was bugging me to go boating this last weekend and being the procrastinator that I am I had not yet installed a brake contoller on my 2011 Ram yet. Got the controller and Harness in the mail on Saturday after only 3 days since order was placed. The install took 10 minutes max including the bracket install and away we went to the River. I have had a few different trucks in the past, all with brake controllers, some factory some not. So when picking one for my truck, I wanted something with as few a knobs, dials, etc as possible. I looked around on the internet and found the Primus, it was the middle of the road as far as sophistication and basic. It was shipped promptly and arrived within a few days. The installation was easy with great instructions. Would recommend to anyone who wants ease of operation without spending a fortune to get it. 91572

The tekonsha controller was easy to install with the help of the instructions, (very well written), and the video, specific to my 2006 Dodge Ram. Set up was also quick as I dialed the power setting to 7, and have just the right amount of braking for my empty trailer. When I loaded trailer for the first time, I adjusted the boost level to the b1 position and that was all that I need to do to have the safety of well adjusted trailer brakes at finger tip control. Very pleased with this pur hase. 109795

I cannot rate the Primus IQ controller yet as I have just received it.However, the instructions/disk are very clear and straight forward. What I can comment on is eTrailer.com. I don't think I have ever seen an online retailer with better customer service and online support (videos showing step by step installation instructions for almost every specific model truck) It took a real effort on eTrailer's part to provide this. It still works great, using it occasionally to haul a heavy camping trailer. In my 2012 Tundra, it mounds w plastic mount on the right over the tire pressure calibration switch, so it can be accessed by temporarily removing the unit. The square hole in the plastic mound allows access to the switch. I love the boost feature on the unit. It just works. Thanks Scott Smith

I found a video on YouTube that gave me step by step instructions on installing. I did it myself and hooked up to my camper for the first time. Worked perfectly. Also shipping was faster that I expected. Etrailer had the best price out of everyone for it. Glad I bought this one. 93130

I purchased the Primus brake controller after recently buying a 20 ft car hauler. The controller was a must due to the weight of the trailer and its cargo. The controller works great and the adjustment roller and turbo boost are fantastic and easily accessed. The installation only takes about 30 minutes too. Thanks Primus for a great product and thanks e-trailer for getting the product out to me so quickly. 63657

The Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer brake Controller is exactly as listed, but the best part is all the great customer service from etrailer.com Orders are processed quickly and their videos are very helpful for installation! Allow a little extra shipping time for regular shipping and you will be good to go. ETRAILER is a great company to do business with and no they didn't pay me to write this! 130224

Installation was very easy, went into a 2014 Suburban with the tow package. Just 4 wires to splice in the cabin and attach the bracket to the dash. Then 2 wires under the hood for factory connections to power the unit. Took maybe a half hour ,start to finish. Have not had a chance to tow the trailer yet, buried in a snow bank, but expect it to work well. 112779

I wire this up on my 2004 chevy colorado, mostly to pull my 5x10 7000 GVWR dump trailer. Got the wiring kit from etrailer as well and it was pretty simple to install with the diagram and directions they sent. Just make sure to ground your circuit breakers well. I'm very happy with the whole set up. I can hardly feel the trailer behind me when i break. 70015

Good installation instructions for my 2014 Acura MDX equipped with trailer package. It already had a wired pigtail with an snap in attachment under the dash, so soldering and insulating the 4 wires was a snap. Delivery was within 6 days and the install took about 45 min. Haven't hooked either of the trailers yet but will give followup when used. 103810

Install was very easy in my 2008 Chevy Silverado. Haven't purchased the trailer yet so I can't rate its operation, but I'm sure it will work just fine. A bit of advice for others installing this or any brake controller in a 2008 Silverado...the truck's light blue/white stripe wire had faded with age to a pale green. Don't let that confuse you. 26493

This product was extremely easy to install - with multiple options. The only thing missing was the electrical connectors, but I'm not sure if they were supposed to be a part of the package or not. I really like the fact that I can snap the controller in or out of the vehicle. The product also performed great the first time out. 56775

What can I say? After watching etrailer.com video on installation of the unit, I installed myself with corresponding harness in less than an hour.
