Proportional brake controller automatically levels when mounted within a 90-degree vertical range and a 40-degree horizontal range. Includes digital display, 4 boost levels, reverse-polarity protection, and continuous diagnostics.
With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking, or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just select a boost setting, set the power output level, and you're good to go.
As long as the Reflex controller is properly mounted according to the included instructions, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This dual-axis, inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

The Reflex offers 4 different load range (or boost) levels. These settings are designed to give you more or less initial power output based on your trailer's weight. The load range levels let you alter the sensitivity of the brake controller's internal sensor, thus increasing the initial power output to the trailer brakes to better compensate for weighty loads. To set the load range, press and release the button on the front of the controller until your desired level appears on the screen.
So, if you boost the initial power so that the sensor is more sensitive, your trailer brakes will activate with more intensity right off the bat. This means that they will also reach maximum braking faster simply because they will start out at that higher intensity. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your vehicle. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.
Once you set the load range level, you can adjust the overall power output by moving the thumbwheel on the side of the controller. This setting ranges from 0.5 (minimum output) to 9.9 (maximum output). This indicates the maximum amount of power that will be sent back to your trailer brakes when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle. Optimum output should cause your trailer brakes to function effectively without locking up.
The Reflex offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. When the Reflex is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode, reducing the power draw to minimize drain on your vehicle's battery. This power-conservation mode begins after 1 hour of inactivity and ends the moment your vehicle's brake pedal is pressed.
When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for a prolonged period of time, the Reflex will reduce the power output to your trailer's brakes, preventing them from overheating.
If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle, the manual override lever is easily accessible. Pushing this slide engages the brakes on your trailer with full power.
The self-leveling feature of the Reflex ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at a vertical angle that is within 90 degrees, and the controller will level itself automatically. Make sure that the controller is also positioned so that the side-to-side angle is within ±20 degrees.
Installation is a snap. After mounting the Reflex unit in your cab using the included bracket, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your vehicle. The other end plugs into the brake controller.
For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.
Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:
20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications
30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

Today we're going to review part number C51130. This is the Curt Reflex Trailer Brake Controller. This is a proportional designed brake controller which will activate your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. It will automatically adjust the trailer's braking based on the deceleration of the tow vehicle. This does activate immediately so there's no pausing like with some of the time delay brake controllers. It does contain an automatic leveling ability.
It has an internal sensor which will detect any deceleration even if the controller is not mounted flat. When you install this it can be positioned at any angle vertically up or down 360 degrees full rotation pretty much. Horizontally there is a limit-its 20 degrees side to side. So this way 20 degrees and this way 20 degrees or 20 degrees this way, 20 degrees that way. So there is a limit horizontally.
It does have four load range levels. This button right here will get you your load range levels. Our boost settings it'll let you adjust your initial braking power and aggressiveness. It does have a dual access accelerometer which will ensure smooth stops. This brake controller does do a constant diagnostic check which will alert you to any potential problems.
A few integrated safe guards it has to protect the vehicle, the trailer or the controller is one it minimizes the drain on your car battery by entering a power conservation mode after one hour of inactivity. If it isnt used for one hour it will go into the conservation mode. It will help keep your trailer brakes from overheating by reducing the power output to them during prolonged stops and it will prevent brake controller and trailer brake away system against any shorts. It also has a built in polarity protection which will prevent any positive or negative power problems when it is installed wrong. The digital display right here will show you the load range settings and any air codes.
The button I mentioned is for the load range and also for calibration. Right here it has a built in-if I show you when I push it-it has a built in slide bar manual override which is used for emergency braking situations. It does come with the mounting bracket which can be slid on and installed. The top is the holes has mounting screws that can be used or it also has a double faced sticky tape that can be used. Also has a nice little card which will have a-it's a quick reference guide which will show you what some of the display would be indicating. This part is made in the USA and now what I want to do is connect it to a power source to show you what the display read out would look like. What I have here is a Curt Universal Wiring Adapter that's used to mount a Curt Brake Controller in a vehicle that might not have a factory brake controller port. On one end is the port that would snap into the Curt Brake Controller, the other end will be pigtails which I right now have wired to a power source. Basically right now I'm going to show you if we turn on the power as you can see it's flashing CL and what that means is it needs to be calibrated so what you would do is push and hold that button and when you hold the button once it's calibrated it'll come on and be a constant CL instead of it flashing. When you let it go it'll just show you the two dots. The two dots basically mean that the trailer is connected and you're ready to go. If it only showed one dot that would mean the trailer is not connected. Basically what you want to do is-it has four load range settings-our boost settings. Basically you just push this button-you can see load range one, load range two, three and four. Basically the load ranges would be when you put it in one that would be if you're towing a trailer that might weigh less than your tow vehicle weight. If you're trailer is going to be equal to the tow vehicle you would want to go to load range two and if the trailer's vehicle weight is 50% more than the tow vehicle you would want to go to three and then load range four would be if it's 100% greater than the tow vehicle weight. Once you find the load range you want to put it in-let's say one right there then there's a knob here on the side that you can turn it-you can see that it'll range from .5 all the way up to 9.9. That's the amount of brake output it would be. So in Load range one we're going to set it at let's say at 6.1 now it goes off and you're all set at load range one with a 6.1 setting. If you have an emergency braking situation as you push this manual override you can see the brake output increasing and if you go all the way it will do the 6.1 you have it set at. Those would be the settings you would do on your brake controller. The application for this that will work on trailers up to four axles or eight brake assemblies. It is designed to be used with an electric or electrical hydraulic trailer brakes and it does come with a limited lifetime warranty. Although alot of people pick some controllers that are around $50 I highly recommend this certain controller. It is money well spent. Installation was a breeze about 10 minutes and calibrating was even easier with a push of a button. After hooking up my travel trailer I could tell the difference in my stopping power. Product works very well with my trailer. Install was as easy as could be expected. The only issue I had was the adhesive pad I used to secure the controller mount gave out. I had to screw the mount in. Just plan on screwing in the mount to your dash and don't rely on the adhesive pad alone. 303543
