Time-Delayed Braking

The Activator III applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your Chevrolet Suburban, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Activator. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (sync) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.


A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Activator sends power out in the same way, with the same gradual delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the sync setting.


Sync Settings

To adjust the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking action, use the slide control on the side of the Activator III to change the sync setting. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the switch forward. To get smoother braking action, move the switch backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter the sync setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.


Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller. After mounting the unit, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your Chevrolet Suburban. The other end plugs into the brake controller.


Installation Accessories

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your Chevrolet Suburban, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number 5520. This is the Draw-Tite Activator III Time Delayed Trailer Brake Controller. This brake controller is going to activate your trailer brakes with a preset intensity. The signal is then going to be sent to the trailer brakes when your tow vehicles brakes are activated. It's got a really nice design to it. Silver finish around the housing, then it's got the black here in the middle, so silver and black two-tone. It looks really good.

It's got a very easy to read digital display here on the front which I'll show you towards the end of the video. We'll plug that in so you can see the displays that it shows and how easy to read that is. It is going to feature adjustable output control that's going to let you determine the amount of braking force. That's going to be the thumb wheel here on top of the controller. You'll want to set it to a maximum when you travel through hilly terrain with a fully loaded trailer. Then you'll want to back off the power output when you tow a lightweight trailer. The sync setting is going to be the slide lever here on the side of the controller.

This is going to let you adjust the agressivness with which the brakes are activated. You can get full output faster by moving the switch forward to increase activation speed. You can achieve smoother braking by moving the switch in the opposite direction to supply power gradually. Here on the front we've got the area for the digital display reading. It's also going to feature the built in slide bar, this is our manual override function. It's a very quick and easy installation.

There is no need to mount this level like proportional brake controllers. You can do it at any angle that's best going to suit your application. It's going to come with the mounting bracket and the screws that you need to get it installed. It's going to have two screws that hold it to the bracket itself. Then it's going to have two more screws that are self-tapping that can go right into the dash of your vehicle. Here on the back it's got a very easy to use port. It's going to come with this plug here, this is your plug-in port.

It's going to make it easy to connect to the wiring harness. This simply connects back here. Push it in until you hear it snap into place. It's got a locking tab on the top. It exposes some wires right here. You're going to have four different wires. The blue is going to be for the trailer brakes. The black is going to be for your power. The white is going to be for your ground. The red is going to be for the stoplight. It exposes these that way you can wire it into your vehicles wiring harness. Here at etrailer.com we do offer plug-in vehicle specific brake controller adapters. They are sold separately and they can be used for certain applications to help reduce your installation time. This is designed for trailers with up to four axles which would be a total of eight brake assemblies. It is designed for use with electric brakes only, so please keep that in mind. The overall dimensions of the actually controller, it's going to give us a width of about three and one quarter of an inch with an overall length of four and seven eighths of an inch. Measuring the overall height it's only about one and one eight of an inch tall, so it's a really nice compact controller. It's going to stay up out of the way and it's not going to take up much space. I'm going to go ahead and hook it up to our external power source that way we can show you what it looks like with power running to it. You could see how it easy that display is to read. Draw-Tite covers this brake controller with a limited lifetime warranty, so they really stand behind their product. I've got it all plugged in, when I press the manual override you can see there it's going to show the reading. We can adjust that output level as well. This is going to adjust in point five increments. You can see that there, all of the way from zero point zero to ten. That's the manual override and then when we apply our brakes to the tow vehicle you can also adjust that and get it preset as you wish. Here on the side you're going to have the sync setting going from zero all of the way up to nine. Again that's just going to adjust the aggressiveness with which the brakes are activated. A very simple system to you use. Again it's got the nice easy to read digital display. It's also going to pop up some error messages. They do include a little handbook, just a little instructional guide. It's going to show you those codes and what they mean and kind of the best response to those to get those resolved. Draw-Tite provides all of that and I believe that's going to do it for today's review of part number 5520. This is the Draw-Tite Activator III Time Delayed Trailer Brake Controller. .
