Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner. Just set the initial power level, select a boost setting, and you're good to go.

As long as the Primus IQ controller is properly mounted and is pointed in the direction of travel, it will sense - via an internal inertia sensor - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

Aside from smoother, more efficient braking, Tekonsha's Primus IQ brake controller also offers a boost feature that gives you more initial braking power for those times when you're towing heavy loads. You can switch boost levels so that the power output to your trailer brakes automatically starts out at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the predetermined power setting.

So, if you boost the initial power so that your trailer brakes activate with 25 percent of the overall intensity at the start, the brakes will reach maximum braking faster. This is particularly beneficial if you are towing a heavy load because the intensity required to stop that load may be far greater than that needed to halt your Acura TL. Therefore, sending out more initial power to the trailer brakes - and causing them to reach maximum braking faster - allows you to better control the trailer so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle before coming to a complete stop.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But if you wish to set the boost so that your trailer leads the braking of your towing setup, you can select level B1. The following table gives an indication of when you might use the different boost levels and the power increases that they offer.

Approximate Gross Trailer WeightBoost LevelIncrease in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVWB113%
Equal to tow vehicle GVWB1 or B213% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVWB2 or B3*25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVWB3*25%

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Safety Features

The Primus IQ offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. For example, when it is not in use, this brake controller will be in power-saving mode. In this setting, the power draw falls to minimize drain on your Acura TL's battery.

When you stop at red lights, or any time that your truck and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the Primus IQ's "hold" feature will activate. When this happens, the power output to your trailer's brakes will be reduced to just 25 percent of the preset power setting so that the brakes will not overheat.

If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override is easily accessible. Pushing this slide bar engages the brakes on your trailer with full power. In addition, when you activate this override, the brake lights on your trailer will illuminate, properly warning those behind you of the braking action of your rig.

In addition to all of those safety features listed above, the Primus IQ offers diagnostics such as:

  • Open ground
  • Overload
  • Output short
  • Faulty mounting
  • Power loss
  • No trailer connection

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the Primus IQ ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount it in your cab at a vertical angle that is between 0 degrees (level) and 70 degrees, and the controller will level itself automatically.

Correct Primus mounting70-Degree Primus mounting

Note: The Primus IQ must be mounted on a level horizontal (side-to-side) plane and must be lined up with the direction of travel for the internal sensor to function properly.

Installation is a snap. After mounting the Primus IQ unit in your cab using the included bracket, hardwire one end of the included pigtail harness directly into your Acura TL. The other end plugs into the brake controller. To transfer the Primus IQ to another vehicle or to remove it for storage, just unplug the unit and snap it out of the bracket.

Installation Accessories

For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your Acura TL, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake-control wiring adapter is not available for your Acura TL, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6- to 8-brake applications

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your Acura TL.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2005 Chevrolet Express Van

Today on our 2005 Chevrolet Express van, we'll be installing the Tekonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller for one to three axels. Part number TK90160. To begin with, we'll go ahead and locate the four wires that are part of the factory tow package on this vehicle. You'll see they're right up here underneath the driver side dash, kind of near where the brake pedal is. On our brake controller, we get a short pigtail and it has four different color wires: a black, a red, a white and a blue. We'll go ahead and connect them using some butt connectors, so we'll be tying the blue wire off of our connector that goes in the back of the brake controller to the large blue wire on our factory wiring harness. The black wire off of our brake controller will tie in with the red wire with the white stripe off of our factory wiring harness.

This is the power wire. The white wire will tie in with the black wire. This is the ground wire. The red wire, which is a stop light or brake light switch, will get tied to the light blue wire on our factory wiring harness. Now that we have all of our connections made as well as being taped up, we need to go ahead and find a location inaudible 01:03 our brake controller. We're going to choose to use the plastic style that'll allow you to adjust the brake controller angle a little, as well as easily remove it if you so choose.

To install this, it's just two simple screws that come with the kit. We'll go ahead and choose our location on the lower dash here, but before we put the bracket into place using the screws, we'll check behind the dash to make sure nothing can be damaged behind the dash when we put the screws in. We'll then take the bracket, line it up on our location on the lower dash and install the two screws that come with the kit. Once we have the bracket in place, we'll take our four flat end that we just made our connections earlier with and connect it to the backside of the brake controller. With that done, we can slide our brake controller up into the bracket, locking the tabs in on each side. As far as the functions of the brake controller, the button on the top left is the boost feature button, the round knob on the left side is your power adjustment knob, there's a digital readout screen, and then there's a slide mounted on the right front; this is the manual override button. You've noticed once you've plugged the wiring harness into the back of the brake controller the brake controller was powered up, as well as having an NC which means there's no trailer connected.

We'll go ahead and hook up our trailer and we'll go through some of the other features. Showing how once you plug the trailer in, you get a C, which means the trailer is connected. When we push the manual override button, we can adjust the power level as well as the boost feature. With that, that'll conclude our installation of the Tekonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller for one to three axels. Part number TK90160 on our 2005 Chevrolet Express van.

THANKS for the Brake Controller unit from ETrailer. It arrived w/in 5 days from your MO location to my So CAL residence. Even as an Engineer/Scientist from the Delta IV rocket program and no experience with brake controllers, I was able to install this unit by myself. Your continued (live human) support and online video clips proved to be the key elements to this installation...without my symbolic pocket protector. I have attached a few images of the unit, mounted to the fuse-panel cover (3/16 attachments with locking hex nuts) in a 2006 Toyota 4Runner SR5 (with factory tow package). The placement of the unit onto the panel cover allows a new panel cover (no holes drilled) to be used when it is time to sell the vehicle. 85308

Like other reviewers the biggest challenge was getting the cover plate removed (and replaced) to access the factory connection. The connection was at the very top of the wiring bundle and I was able to cut about 1/2" of the tape holding the bundle together very near the connection to gain access without removing or cutting all of the tape. The ground terminal was easily accessed and the installation was quick and mostly painless. The instructions to set the braking level was spot on. I have a Sequoia with a knee airbag and tire pressure monitoring. I place the controller with the open back of the bracket allowing access to reset the tire pressure monitoring switch. 103222

This item was in stock and shipped the same day. It arrived undamaged and the installation took about 15 minutes thanks to the wiring adapter that let me directly connect this unit to my 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. Hard to image that it could be easier than this. 91296

Purchased the Tekonsa Primus IQ controller with wiring adapter for my Dodge Ram. Shipment arrived quickly and was exactly what I needed. Installation was a piece of cake. Cut an opening in the plastic stock dash location. Plugged the adapter into the Dodge plug under the dash and into the Primus. Worked perfectly. No fuss. Installed in about 10 minutes which included the time to cut the opening.. Picture will be poster... I was so happy with the service from etrailers that I ordered the Blue Ox Swaypro hitch. Thanks ETrailer.com! 112238

Pictures of the install. Approximately a 20 min job. First picture my finger is pointing to the factory plug with the etrailer supplied harness plugged in. Note the harness did not specify that the white common with the ring terminal should be connected to ground. But then again that SHOULD be obvious. I will be towing this weekend so I will rate the product then. One minor gripe is that there is always power to the unit which is a battery drain (as evidenced with the key out of the ignition and the unit stayed on) Not sure as to the impact but the controller can always be unplugged or removed. Sorry for the dirty floor mats in the photos. 115201

Comments

Just a quick note, there is an automatic shut-off on the Primus IQ. After 15 minutes or so of in activity, the controller will power down automatically. As soon as the controller detects movement, it comes back on. No battery drain, and you do not have to remember to turn the controller off or on.

Shipping was fast, and the controller was offered at a great price. Saved some money and avoided issues by installing it myself. If there is something else I need, I'll check etrailer first, 84900

Plug and play is a true definition. My family was bugging me to go boating this last weekend and being the procrastinator that I am I had not yet installed a brake contoller on my 2011 Ram yet. Got the controller and Harness in the mail on Saturday after only 3 days since order was placed. The install took 10 minutes max including the bracket install and away we went to the River. Thanks etrailer!!!!! Would have never heard the end of it from my 14 year old daughter if we would not have made it boating!!!!!46597

I appreciate the help and patience your technical personnel gave to me on installing the Primus brake controller in my GMC Sierra. I called twice (my fault) and both were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely shop from your company in the future.63878

I chose this device based on my trailer repairman's brand recommendation. He usually has them in stock but was out. I got mine before his order came in. He also did not have a wiring harness for my vehicle so I ordered that, too. This is the first time I've ordered anything significant that I knew virtually nothing about. From the descriptions and pictures on the etrailer site it was easy to look up what I needed. I also read on the site about time control vs proportional and then knew the proportional would be good for me. I have a new camping trailer that has electric brakes; need the controller to operate the trailer brakes. The product quality of the brake controller appears very good. The wiring kit is quite substantial. My mechanic will wire up for me this week end and I'll have his opinion then. I am very satisfied with the speed of the delivery and the quality of the products. thank you84360

Great product so far. I'm a novice at towing and I got this controller in the mail 2 days before I bought my first camper ever. I found a video on YouTube that gave me step by step instructions on installing. I did it myself and hooked up to my camper for the first time. Worked perfectly. Also shipping was faster that I expected. Etrailer had the best price out of everyone for it. Glad I bought this one.93130

I cannot rate the Primus IQ controller yet as I have just received it.However, the instructions/disk are very clear and straight forward. What I can comment on is eTrailer.com. I don't think I have ever seen an online retailer with better customer service and online support (videos showing step by step installation instructions for almost every specific model truck) It took a real effort on eTrailer's part to provide this. Great job!35943

What can I say? After watching etrailer.com video on installation of the unit, I installed myself with corresponding harness in less than an hour. Worked as suggested and got a better controller for less money than my local camper place was going to charge me to install their unit. Made me a believer on etrailer.com for sure!89547

Install was very easy in my 2008 Chevy Silverado. Haven't purchased the trailer yet so I can't rate its operation, but I'm sure it will work just fine. A bit of advice for others installing this or any brake controller in a 2008 Silverado...the truck's light blue/white stripe wire had faded with age to a pale green. Don't let that confuse you.26493

Product works great, as advertised. The Tech at the RV dealer commented on the reliability of this brake controller, and the install literally took 15 minutes, start to finish. The supplied factory wiring harness made quick, simple work of the installation. The video on the etrailer website is right on the money as well. I have dealt with etrailer for all my towing needs since 1995, and they have never let me down. Great, quality products......quick delivery, and customer service that is second to none. There is no reason to shop anywhere else. Thanks etrailer.......you are the best!54172

Great controler for the price. Easily mounted and set up using the vehicle specific harness. Installed in a 2003 Toyota Sequoia just under the key in the flat of the center cover. Perfect for the 0 - 70 deg mounting location required by this controler. Setup and operation just as was stated in user manuals. eTrailer was great as well, everything came together and on time.84801

Im a novice with a 2003 Tundra. Vehicle specific harness options offered while ordering? What level of difficulty would you rate it, what required tools? Thanks

comment by: Corey J. - 6/26/2013

A plug-in brake controller harness can be used with your 2003 Tundra, if it came equipped with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector in the rear. You would use harness 3040-P for most Tekonsha controllers. I have sent you a link to a video that shows an install on a 2007 Tundra. It will give you a clear illustration of the install. All you need is a drill or screw gun, and your standard selection of screwdrivers. If you do not have a factory 7-Way, you will need to use kit ETBC7 to install the system and that is a bit more involved, but we also have videos of that kit so you can see how that is done.

I am unable to correctly rate this product at this time because there is no Dodge 2013 harness with which I can attach it. If/when the harness becomes available (a year plus after the truck came out, of course), I will re-review the product. Note that lack of this harness is NOT the fault of eTrailer, but if you're purchasing this for a 2013 Dodge truck, you might want to wait.73972

Comments

Tekonsha is currently slated to have the harnesses, 3023-P, available by the end of April 2013. There have been running changes to the 2013 Dodge Ram that have made harness availability particularly challenging.

This product was extremely easy to install - with multiple options. The only thing missing was the electrical connectors, but I'm not sure if they were supposed to be a part of the package or not. I really like the fact that I can snap the controller in or out of the vehicle. The product also performed great the first time out.56775

I bought this product after reading several reviews. I recently purchased a Fun Finder 189FBS Travel trailer, and I needed a Brake Controller that was proportionally controlled. After my first trip with my 2012 Rubicon/ Fun Finder; I am very pleased with my purchase. This controller works best for my setup, on the "b1" boost level. Setup and installation took less than 2 hours, and I did it myself. The instructions and reference video from etrailer.com were very helpful. I was quoted nearly $400 to install this controller from my local RV shop. I bought it hear, spent 2 hours, and saved $250. If you can crimp a wire, and run a drill- You can do this!80929

I wire this up on my 2004 chevy colorado, mostly to pull my 5x10 7000 GVWR dump trailer. Got the wiring kit from etrailer as well and it was pretty simple to install with the diagram and directions they sent. Just make sure to ground your circuit breakers well. I'm very happy with the whole set up. I can hardly feel the trailer behind me when i break.70015

I purchased the Primus brake controller after recently buying a 20 ft car hauler. The controller was a must due to the weight of the trailer and its cargo. The controller works great and the adjustment roller and turbo boost are fantastic and easily accessed. The installation only takes about 30 minutes too. Thanks Primus for a great product and thanks e-trailer for getting the product out to me so quickly.63657

This is my third Tekonsha brake controller and the quality is excellent. I've got to say that your installation video saved me a lot of grief. I spent about 20 minutes trying to find the factory connector under the dash without success. The video showed me exactly where it was hidden. Without your help, I'd still be looking!! Your salespeople were helpful, too. Anything else I need for my trailer I'll be using you- and recommending you too. 108744

I installed this on my 1997 Chevy K1500 pickup to pull my farm trailer, Kubota tractor, and it's implements (total of about 5500#s). I bought my truck new in 1997 with the towing package. eTrailer had a number of links related to the installation, but the most helpful was the one that identified the blue brake and orange power wires that, in my case, were preinstalled at the factory. That made the job significantly easier. What I thought would be the most challenging part of the install turned out to be simple, but only because of pure, dumb luck. Because I had installed aftermarket security and stereo systems shortly after I bought the truck, there was no way to identify/compare the pictures/discussions to identify the hot brake wire under the dash near the brake (other than that it was likely a white or gray wire). The circuit tester (purchased with my order from eTrailer) turned out to be a godsend. Unbelievably, the first white wire I tested turned out to be the hot brake wire! I was very lucky to hit the correct wire on the first try. The first time I hooked up to my trailer, the system worked flawlessly... exactly as the instructions described. And the performance is excellent. Note: I double/triple checked connections as I worked. I highly recommend doing this. Hunting down electrical connection malfunctions is not something you want to do. Overall, I'm VERY happy with my purchase and the support from eTrailer. I highly recommend this product and eTrailer.98210

This product plugged right in and worked perfectly as it should. I like the different boost levels as a quick adjustment between loaded and unloaded trailers. No messing with the gain controller to keep the tires from sliding. The special dodge plug made install a breeze and less than 5 minutes. Much better than splicing into wires. Plus eliminates the need to hunt for the correct wires. This controller works off of inertia so as it senses your truck braking it applies equal braking to the trailer eliminating the jerk experienced from other controllers. Shipping from etrailer was quick as well. Great overall product at a reasonable price. 124031

Recieved the product and it was very well packaged. Very easy installation with the wiring harness that I purchased with the controller. I highly recommend that. Followed the simple instructions inside and took it to the road. Went to Martinsville with our camper for race weekend and the brake controller worked awesome. I like the boost capability. It makes a difference if you have a lighter tow vehicle for sure.123137

Have not had a chance to road test yet but with the help of the videos and tech support, I had it installed in less than 30 minutes. Most of that was deciding where to mount it. Plugged in trailer and all information appeared in the window as described. Will have to review road test at a later date. etrailer expedited delivery which was very much appreciated and shows they aim to please in any way they can ....thxs guys!!120080

I ordered mine with the wiring harness for toyo and Lexus. Everything plugged in nicely and fit perfectly in a Toyota Sequoia under the steering column on the right side. The only suggestions is the that the factory wiring harness in the sequoia has absolutely no slack, so it you order this with an adapter for this make and model, it is a little to short to run it to where I have it. I really had to work to get it mounted. If it had a longer run by about 6 inches it would have been a piece of cake. I still gave it an excellent rating because other than that it was a 5 minute install.116521

Installation was very easy, went into a 2014 Suburban with the tow package. Just 4 wires to splice in the cabin and attach the bracket to the dash. Then 2 wires under the hood for factory connections to power the unit. Took maybe a half hour ,start to finish. Have not had a chance to tow the trailer yet, buried in a snow bank, but expect it to work well.112779

The product was exactly as advertised, arrived very promptly, and I installed it myself in just minutes with the prewired harness for my 2007 Dodge 2500. I have not had the chance to hook up the trailer to set up and gauge the actual performance of the Primus IQ controller, but I don't expect any difficulties. I will definitely use etrailer again. For an actual performance review, you will have to wait a bit. Many thanks...112245

The tekonsha controller was easy to install with the help of the instructions, (very well written), and the video, specific to my 2006 Dodge Ram. Set up was also quick as I dialed the power setting to 7, and have just the right amount of braking for my empty trailer. When I loaded trailer for the first time, I adjusted the boost level to the b1 position and that was all that I need to do to have the safety of well adjusted trailer brakes at finger tip control. Very pleased with this pur hase.109795

While I have not had the chance to use it yet pulling my trailer I picked this particular unit because of the reviews it has received from people that have and are using it. I had it professionally installed and it is working as the instructions say it should. The company that installed it had nothing but good things to say about it as well. I especially want to thank Nicole for her help and customer service she provided to me and I can promise you that all my future trailer needs will be purchased from your company via Nicole. Big Thanks to all of you. 56414

I purchased a Primus IQ from our local NAPA dealer and had already installed it in one of our Dodge trucks before I learned about Etrailer. Needless to say it cost a bit more than the one I ordered from Etrailer a couple weeks later. you cant return electrical products once installed. I received the one from Etrailer in a very timely manner. I was hoping it wasn't a #2 for it being so much cheaper, but it is just fine and installation was no problem because I already had Tenkonsha Voygers so just chop the wire and install new control unit. We have two trucks and pull various trailers, so am real happy with product and will further order trailer items from ETRAILER.COM. Thank you, just Ray107693

I have had a few different trucks in the past, all with brake controllers, some factory some not. So when picking one for my truck, I wanted something with as few a knobs, dials, etc as possible. I looked around on the internet and found the Primus, it was the middle of the road as far as sophistication and basic. It was shipped promptly and arrived within a few days. The installation was easy with great instructions. Would recommend to anyone who wants ease of operation without spending a fortune to get it.91572

  • What are the Differences Between the Prodigy P3 and Primus IQ Brake Controller
  • There are quite a few differences. The ones you can see easily on the outside are the display and control buttons. The P3, part # 90195, uses a multi-color LCD to provide more information where as the Primis IQ uses basic LED numbers like what you would have on your digital alarm clock. The P3 uses a rotary lever on the underside for a manual over ride where as the Primus uses the older slide design that some people have problems with the slide sticking depending on how they grip and operate
