The vehicle specific adapter has one end that plugs into the back of the brake controller while the other end plugs into the port located under the dash.
Note: If your vehicle has a factory installed hitch and 7-way connector, then all of the wires for the brake controller have already been run. If not, additional parts will be required to complete the installation of the brake controller.

- Since your 2009 Dodge Ram has a factory tow package (which should include a 7-Way trailer connector), you ill need Tekonsha P3 and Wiring Harness, # 90195-3020P. I you will need to do is mount the controller as specified in the instructions which I have linked for you, plug the wiring harness into the back of the brake controller and the other end into the under dash hook up you mentioned and installation will be complete.
