This cutaway view of the shank shows the locking mechanism in action. The locking pins extend out from the shank when the key is turned, locking the ball mount into the hitch.
The ball platform locks to the ball mount with an internal lock. When you unlock the platform you can slide it up or down to adjust the ball height. You can also slide the platform off, reverse it, and slide it back on to change ball sizes.

This is Diversi-Techs self-locking adjustable ball mount, part number DTALBM6825. Like other Diversi-Tech ball mounts, this one is made from aircraft-grade billet aluminum. It is designed for 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch trailer hitches and is rated for up to 10,000 pounds gross towing weight and up to 1,500 pounds tongue weight. It can be used in the rise position for 9 inches of rise or in the drop position for 8 inches of drop. It can be adjusted in 1 inch increments. The ball platform has two fixed balls, a larger 2-5/16 and a more common 2 inch. To attach the ball platform to our shank, we need to retract this pin. We will do that with the lock on the side of the platform. Turn the lock and the pin will retract and we can mount it on our shank. We can turn the key and the pin will extend and lock into the shank. You will know when the pin is secured because you will not be able to remove the key until it is seated all of the way. 1:24
Now our ball mount is ready for use. Built into the top is Diversi-Techs spring loaded stainless steel anti-rattle balls. These will help remove some of the play in between the ball mount and your hitch, keeping things more quite. It also features Diversi-Techs self-locking pin system. You do not need a separate pin and clip with this ball mount as it is already built in to the ball mount. To retract the pins, use the lock on the front and turn the lock. With the pins retracted, you can install or remove the ball mount. Once it is in your hitch, ready to go, turn the lock in the opposite direction and the pins will extend and lock it to the hitch. This is a great security feature because there is nothing sticking outside of the hitch for a potential thief to cut. It is also more convenient because you will not have to remember a separate pin and clip or locking hitch pin. Adjustable ball mount - Love the product. It is the second ball mount I purchased needed to get the 2.5" shank since I changed trucks. The only issue I have had is the rubber caps over the key holes. On the first I purchased I noticed when I opened the key hole covers I could not push the rubber caps back into place, fully, because the tab that holds it to the unit would not go back into the hole - it would bunch up creating an obstruction preventing it from seating flush. After several tries and methods I finally cut the tabs off so the caps would close completely. When the new one arrived the other day I was cognizant of the previous issue and tried not to pull the cap out too far to avoid the issue however the same thing happened. In this case I was able to work the tab back into the hole in both places. I wonder if the holes were a little larger if it would not help this situation? Keep up the good work.63114

Nice ball mount! Looks great and functions nicely. The 2 1/2" adapter does not have the "anti rattle" feature; not a big deal. The chrome plating on the ball is very thin and will easily scratch. If keeping the appearance looking new is important to you make sure you you keep all mating surfaces clean and greased. I would also give serious consideration and opt for the stainless ball option if I where to purchase again. Over all, its the cleanest and best looking mount out there. The locking feature is fantastic. The folks at Etrailer are great! 36232
