Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

This etrailer part "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" is a PERFECT fit for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Tekonsha P3 brake controller. After a LOT of research I discovered that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ series (1999-2004) the 2001 model with "factory installed tow package", was the only year that did not have the 'the tucked away blue wire running back to the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of the car. Instead a prewired connector was installed. According to the Jeep WJ users site, the Mopar part #56020142AB (wire harness with the appropriate connector for 2001 Jeep GC) had been discontinued, but Tekonsha Corp. (brake controller manufacturer) had a suitable replacement part. The page link on WJ Jeeps to the correct part at Tekonsha was broken and a search of Tekonsha's website produced no wiring that would even remotely help. After crawling under my dash and removing the electrical fuse cover I found a blue connector. I took a photo of the connector so that I hopefully could find a connector that would help me avoid a complete engine compartment to rear bumper wiring installation. Here on etrailer I found the brake controller I wanted and started looking at what I needed to make it operational. I tried everything I could think of (including writing the etrailer tech) to find out if the "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P would work for my 2001 Jeep. No one was certain. Sooo... I decided that at a cost of $14.99 it was worth it to buy - try - and return if necessary. I also figured if 'worst-came-to-worse' I may want to cut off the Dodge connector and use this shielded wire set instead of Tekonsha's wire harness by snipping off the Dodge connector. 5 minutes out of the box my Tekonsha P3 was lit up and a test light confirmed I had power to the factory installed 7-pin trailer connector at the rear using this etrailer part. It snapped into both connections perfectly. The 30" length sounded adequate, but looked short out of the box. It turns out I have many mounting options with this length. Although it may not be mounted for a day or 2, I've decided to mount it on the left side of the steering wheel column. That's well out of the way of my long legs and yet in easy reach for manually engaging the trailer brake with the hand lever on my brake controller while driving. I would recommend "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" for ANY brake controller installed in a 2001 Jeep GC with the factory installed Mopar/Dodge connector. Just cut off the Tekonsha connector and butt connect the harnesses: BLUE to trailer connector * WHITE to ground - * RED to BRAKE switch (or recommended brake pedal connection point) * BLACK to battery + Attached photos: original Mopar brake controller harness for factory installed tow package 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; etrailer's photo of the dodge connector for Tekonsha controller for visual comparison; a photo of the connector found under my dash; a photo of etrailer part #3020-P connected to my underdash connector; a photo showing the reach of the cable for a possible dash mount; and a photo showing the possible reach for a hidden ash tray mount. 175397

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes. Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities. I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from and would not hesitate to order from them again. 164082

This review was so helpful after all my own research that it helped me feel cofident in my decision to try this connector on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory tow package. Like she said. It takes longer to decide where to put it than it did to take it out of the box, plug it in and tie the cable neatly in place. One thing that she didnt say is that the sheathing around the 4 wires keeps the bundle as neat and clean as Ive ever seen in a wiring harness.

Ordered product, and was shipped out the next day. Got in mail a few days later. Very easy install, I removed the old brake controller and installed the wiring adapter (just plugs in under the dash). Mounted controller to metal mounting bracket. This controller works great, I am very familiar with other controllers, I really like the proportional braking, brakes work great on my landscape and dump trailer. I tried light braking to heavy braking, adjusts properly and quickly to situation, no lockup with empty or loaded trailer. I pull trailers 5-6 days a week and I am glad to have a working brake controller again. Very satisfied with this product, just hope it lasts longer than the other brand I installed. 95931

I haven't tried to hook it up but it appears to be exactly what I needed to hook up my Prodigy brake controller in my 2002 Dodge 2500. Shipped quickly also. 100100

I purchased a P3 brake controller and wiring replacement for my dodge ram truck from E-Trailer and could not be happier with the service and the products. My order was delivered very quickly. The wiring replacement was as good as the OEM part that originally came with the truck. Installation was plug and play once I decided where I wanted to place the bracket for the controller. If this 53 year old lady can do it, anybody can. It was easy. I might add that I shopped around to see what I could get this same controller and wiring for locally and the cheapest was over $100 more than I spent for the same components from E-Trailer! 7615

This is the second time I've ordered products from Etrailer. They shipped the products extremely quickly (both times) and I received them substantially earlier than expected. I previously ordered a Prodigy brake controller and all the parts needed to do a full install, since my truck was not wired for a trailer. I just purchased a 2006 Ram 3500 and used this cable to connect to the factory harness. It worked as advertised and I was able to reuse my exisiting controller without any problems. I will definitely be using Etrailer for future purchases based on their excellent customer service and pricing. 22503

Great product, just wasn't happy with the way shipping went, not sure if that's something you guys can do anything about but I had it shipped via ups and for whatever reason ups dropped it off at the post office, not even the post office I use. I was lucky enough to have checked the tracking update and saw it had been dropped off at the post office the next town over so I run down there and they were nice enough to keep an eye out for it and called me when they found it, if it wasn't for me checking up on it, it would have been sent back to you guys. 178246

I had the benefit of having a factory installed tow package on my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 pick up. With that being said, I was still unsure of if what I saw online would work. I contacted via email and they answered all my questions and concerns within a few emails. I bought the product and install extremely easy. My only complaint is that the cable is not very long. Approx 3ft or so. But other then that, it works great and help me tow my bobcat on my 16' trailer with ease of stopping. 103305

Installation was a breeze, I used it last sunday towing my stock trailer, the digital display is nice. The gal I spoke to at etrailer was very helpful for me while deciding which controller to install. I regularly tow a 16' steel stock trailer as well as occasionally tow brick and masonry materials, the p3 proportional was a major step up from my old school drawtite electric controller. The self leveling feature of the p3 has already been helpful for me. I am pleased with the product. 42792

Easy install in 2008 Dodge 1500. I brought down the wire block behind the e-brake, snipped the tie wrap holding the factor installed wire harness and plugged in the ele brake harness to it. Put the wire block back up and ran the wire harness over the peddle support and back down the other side to connect it to the Prodigy P3. Total time was 10 min for complete install. Another 15 min troubleshooting why it was not working. Fuse was blown and replacement remedied that. 181994

I purchased this for my 2008 dodge Dakota. It did not have factory tow package but they do have the factory connector. Power in, brake power and ground are all there and trailer brake out comes out of the cab through factory harness and to a connector under truck where it dead ends. With this connector I only had to connect brake controller to factory connector and then wire from under cab to the rear of truck (one wire). Made this very easy 188790

I installed the electronic 3020-p break controller with the harness for a dodge ram in about 20 minutes. It was about as easy as it could be with the correct products from E-Trailer. I have not hooked up to my travel trailer as yet but foresee no major problems after reading the supplied directions for doing so. Thanks again. I could take pictures of the installation but don't know how to attach and send them to you. Thanks for great products. 95537

Good product - install was easy - had the install done in 30 minutes - hardest part was deciding where to mount it in my vehicle. I used the included 'housing' for the unit and mounted that housing to my dash so that all I have to do is clip into place when needed. My vehicle has factory tow already installed so all I had to do was plug in the correct harness to the unit and the other end into the tralier brake clip on my vehicle. 156853

I even got an e mail letting me know that it has been delivered. Outstanding customer service! 31726

This is a direct plugin cable from the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 controller to my 2008 Dodge Ram 2500. It attached easily both to the controller and to the truck's socket next to the parking brake on the firewall. Two cable ties to fasten the extra wire length to the speedometer and hood release cables finished the job. Worked just like the video said it would. 190537

Installed on a 06 Dodge 3500 Mega Cab. This is as advertised, but it's only about 24 inches long. If you want it to reach the center console you will need to splice in about 12 - 16 inches of more wire, but it's still much easier than splicing the factory wires under the dash. 9866

Very nice complete kit. As well as good instructions with the aid of the video. Any one with basic skills should be able to install with little ease. Only downside is thin bracket that bolts to bumper for plug. Should last as long as it doesn't get pulled on hard. 185377

  • Where Is Brake Controller Port Located On 2001 Dodge Durango For Installation Of Adapter, # 3020-P
  • If your 2001 Dodge Durango has the factory installed 7-way trailer connector on the rear bumper, the port for the brake controller should be located near the emergency brake pedal. I am sending a video link of a brake controller installation on a 2003 Dodge Dakota and at the 45 second mark it shows the location of the brake controller port under the dash that should help you locate the port on your vehicle. You can check the port with a circuit tester to see if one of the pins supplies...

  • Wiring a Brake Controller and a 7-Way Connector On a Dodge 2500
  • With the factory 4-Way connector you will need a brake controller with the proper wiring connection for Dodge vehicles. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy, item # 90185 and adapter item # 3020-P, for your vehicle. This adapter is a vehicle specific brake controller connector. You will also need a 7-Way, item # 30717, adapter. With these parts you can use the specific instructions on our brake controller wiring page for 1995-present Dodge Ram trucks (see link). From the front wheel...

If your truck was equipped with the factory installed 7-way trailer connector, installation will be simple. If you have not already chosen a brake controller, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 along with the wiring adapter, part # 90885 along with the wiring adapter, # 3020-P. One end of the wiring adapter plugs into the blue connector...

  • Brake Controller and Wiring Harness for a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with Factory Tow Package

The # 3020-P harness will plug into the back of the brake controller and the plug on the other end will plug into the factory brake controller port located under the dash, above the emergency brake pedal. I have also included a video installation of a proportional...

  • Parts Needed for Setting up a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 For a Trailer with Electric Brakes
  • If your 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 came with a 7-Way trailer connector from the factory it is pre-wired for a brake controller. If this is the case, all you would need is a brake controller and the wiring harness to plug the controller into the port under the dash. Our most popular brake controller is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. It is a pretty easy controller to use and is quite effective. The proper wiring harness for a 2003 Ram with factory 7-Way is the # 3020-P. The whole set up would...

  • The brake controller port on a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 equipped with the appropriate tow package is located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal. It will be taped to another wire bundle and will have the harness, part # 3020-P, connected to it. I have included a link to part 3020-P so you know what it looks like as well as the instructions that describe where to find the brake controller port. The Tekonsha Voyager 9030, part # 39510, should only light up green when there is a trailer...

  • Location of Brake Control Connector on 2004 Dodge Ram
  • Your 2004 Dodge should have the connector if the 4-pole connector was factory installed, but it might be a bit tricky to locate. Behind the emergency brake pedal on the firewall is a white junction box. The blue connector you are looking for is located above the junction box, and is sometimes actually pinned to the top of the box. You might need to give the connector a tug to get it free. The connector is sometimes hidden by the wires entering the top of the box, so sometimes you will...

  • If your 1996 Dodge Ram has the factory 7-way connector at the rear of the vehicle, then all of the wires for the brake controller have been run. You will just need a brake controller wiring adapter. I recommend using part # 3020-P and cutting off the black plug. This adapter plugs into the brake controller plug under the dash, to the left of the steering column taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. The four pigtail wires on the other end will be butt-connected to the...

  • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Factory 4-Flat Trailer Connector
  • Yes, I can most certainly help you. It sounds like you have a factory 4-Way connector at the rear of your 2004 Dodge Ram. So you will need 2 things in order to have the lights and the trailer brakes functional on the trailer. First, you will need a brake controller installed in the cab of the truck to control the electric trailer brakes. Second, you will need a 7 and 4 way Installation Kit, # ETBC7 to allow for all of the functions (lights and brakes) to work on the trailer. For a brake...

The problem is that the trailer brake lights are coming on when your controller is showing OC even if your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 is not in use. The 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee without tow package may have the connector under the dash from the factory, but, if present, it most likely is not fully functional. In addition there was no 7-Way at the rear of the vehicle so the blue wire from the harness is terminated somewhere in the factory wiring harness. We do not recommend digging...

The 4-way would not as it does not carry that circuit. As far as function goes, the two controllers are actually pretty similar. The primary difference between the two is that the P3 # 90195 uses what I would call a more user friendly display. Instead of an error code like what's displayed on the P2 # 90885, the P3 will actually spell out in plain...
