Blue Ox Tow Bar Wiring Kit Installation - 2012 Ford Fiesta

Video Transcript for Blue Ox Tow Bar Wiring Kit Installation - 2012 Ford Fiesta

Today in our 2012 Ford Fiesta, we'll be installing the blue ox towing accessory kit, part number BX 88109. Starting in the front of the vehicle where we mount the plug that'll connect to the motor home, we can start running our wire from the engine compartment. It'll be easier to start here by removing the pushpin tab, and dropping the wire down to our bracket. Now we'll go ahead and route through the engine compartment, up to the firewall. Here, we can locate a grommet that we'll be able to pass our wire through into the cabin. To locate a grommet can be easiest by going inside the vehicle and looking up under the dash.

Going back to installation, we can locate the grommet, remove it, taking a utility knife, and cutting a slit to pass the wire through. Now that we have that done, let's go ahead and pull the wire through, and then reinstall the grommet. Next, we'll remove the driver's side threshold and kick panel. Using a flatplated screwdriver or a trimpanel tool, we'll go ahead and remove both, and the screw holding the kick panel. Now, with both of those removed, we can continue routing the wire behind the kick panel and along the manufacturer's wiring to the back seat.

Now, before we route the wire into the back row, it'll be easiest to go ahead and remove the threshold now, and the rear seat. With those removed and set aside for reinstallation later, we can now pull our wire into the back row. It may be necessary to go ahead and use a pull wire, or in this case, we're using a piece of air tube or a stiff piece of wire to attach your four pole wire to, to run it through the wire track underneath the threshold for the driver's side. We'll run our air tubing through the channel, then attach the four pole wire with some black electrical tape, and pull it through. Next, pulling back the trim on the driver's side, we'll locate the manufacturer's wiring harness.

Using our utility knife, we'll cut back the black electrical tape and locate the wires necessary to connect into the rear tail light circuit here on the driver's side. Here on the driver's side, we'll be connecting the brown wire get connected to the purple wire with the green tracer, and our yellow wire will get connected to the blue wire with the white tracer, connecting our break and turn signal circuit. The green wire from our four pole, we'll go ahead and peel back and route over to the passenger's side, along with the white wire, which will be connected to the body, or our ground wire. Let's go ahead and cut off the excess from the brown and yellow wire, which will stay here on the driver's side. Again, the brown wire will get connected to the purple wire with the green tracer, and our yellow wire will get connected to the blue wire with a white tracer, connecting our break and turn signal circuit.

To make these connections, we'll be using the diode and terminal connectors provided with our install kit. We'll cut the length the brown and yellow wire, strip both back, then add connectors. Then, we'll cut the manufacturer's wire, strip back both ends and add connectors to it. Our diode will have two ins and one out. The out will run to the vehicle tail lights. The in will come from the manufacturer's wiring from the front of the vehicle, and the four pole wiring we ran from the front of the vehicle. Once we complete the first set, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process with the second set. Now with our connections made here, we'll move to our white ground wire. We'll cut the length, add a ring terminal, along with along with self-tapping screw, and attach it directly to the vehicle body. Here's a perfect location where the sheet metal overlaps, giving us a good ground connection. Next, we'll take the green wire and route it over to the passenger's side. Now you're going to take a couple zip ties, and secure our wiring to the manufacturer's wires. Next, we'll move over to the passenger's side and repeat the same process with the blue wire with the white tracer to connect the break and turn signal circuit. Note, on vehicles with a separate or spit parking light circuit, you'll need to run a brown wire along with the green wire over to the passenger's side, repeating the same process and making a connection with the passenger's side tail light circuit. Then, once all the connections are made, secure the wires with the zip ties as necessary, and begin reinstalling your interior trim components. Now with our interior trim components reinstalled, we'll move back to the front of the vehicle. We left enough wire that we can go ahead and cut off any excess. Strip back the ends and attach it to our new six pole connector provided with our install kit. However, as you know, we'll only be using four of the six pins. The white wire will go to G for ground, the green wire will go to the RT indicator for right turn signal and break, yellow wire to the LT for left turn signal and break, and the brown to the TN for our running lights. Now, with our connections made at the plug, quick tech tip. I like to go ahead and wrap this up with some black electrical tape to help keep out dust, dirt and debris, along with the moisture. Then we'll slide the boot back onto the six pole connector, and attach it to our base plate bracket, using selftapping screws. And with our connector installed and secured, that'll complete the installation of the blue ox towing accessory kit part number BX 88109 on our 2012 Ford Fiesta. End of audio 00:09:45.
